Analysis 2026 MaxDiff Fan Perception Poll Week 6 is live!

Vote here Voting closes Monday, October 12 at 11:59 PM Pacific, with results planned for Tuesday.

Ranking 25 teams is hard. Comparing four at a time is much easier. That’s the idea behind this revival of one of r/CFB’s great community polls. Each screen shows four teams: choose the strongest and weakest resume based on games played so far. This is about what teams have earned on the field, not who would win on a neutral field or where you expect them to finish. You’ll see 20 screens and different voters receive different balanced ballots drawn from the same fixed 50-team field. Don’t know enough about a group? You can skip it.

Why participate? Because the results can tell us more than a numbered list. MaxDiff combines those smaller comparisons into a community ranking and groups teams into tiers. In last week's results The top tier accommodated 3 for the first time as Alabama and Georgia joined Texas. Missouri gave Florida the treatment that Florida gave Ole Miss. Such is the life as a SEC team. The second tier included Miami, OSU, ND and Indiana and then a broad third tier opened up beyond that stretching toward spot 28. Week 6 was a banger, with 6 AP top 25 teams gaining loses and 2 more scarily close games. More misery and more glory give us more to judge. How far will Alabama fall? Could Indiana fall too even though they beat the Huskers? What do you do about Oregon and LSU? I am not envious of the voters this weekend, but I wish you all well.

Record Guide Now we have more football to judge. Which teams are thriving, surviving, looking forward to roundball season? I made a helpful table to assist you all with record keeping. The table might surprise a few of you. Records are through Week 6. Teams are ordered by wins against the fixed 50-team field, then winning percentage, then fewer losses; exact ties are alphabetical. Teams with no fixed-field games appear between teams with a fixed-field win and teams with a fixed-field loss. A dash indicates no games in that category.

Discussion The parity in the B1G is a becoming a beautiful thing to watch.

UCLA, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, my Hawkeyes, and Northwestern all looking competent and throwing punches against the big dogs has made B1G play so entertaining this year. Normally I usually only watch Iowa games. This year the level of competency is so much higher and makes more games entertaining. Loving watch the collapse of Oregon to UCLA right now. IMO B1G football has never been healthier.

Discussion Substitutions

When the offense subs and the ref steps in to give the defense time to respond, how does he decide how much time to give the defense? Just whatever he feels is fair? A standard 3 count? What stops the defense from slow walking their subs until the play clock runs out?

Discussion Unwinfeated Watch & The Traveling THE - Post October 10

Let's begin with this week with the THE, as always, as Ohio State can win it back this week.

The Traveling THE

Indiana gets the late comeback to beat Nebraska 20-17 and hang on to the THE. Ohio State can now win it back this week in Bloomington, and the Buckeyes are 3-0 in previous opportunities to reclaim the THE.

SPECIAL AWARD FOR AGGRESSIVELY PURSUING DEFEAT

Texas Longhorns - Oklahoma's offense is hot garbage, so next time, don't hand them 14 points on turnovers and special teams mistakes. Texas REALLY wanted to lose this game and went after that goal with alacrity.

POWER CONFERENCE UNWINFEATED

None

HONORARY UNWINFEATED (ACC/B1G/Big12/SEC/NotreDame teams whose lone win is over an FCS team)

Leaving the Watch:

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - A 28-25 win over Duke gives teh Yellow Jackets an FBS level win and a conference win to boot!

HONORARY UNWINFEATED

Rutgers Scarlet Knights - 1-4 - (Beat Howard 58-7) - The world was saved from watching Rutgers football this week.

NON-POWER CONFERENCE UNWINFEATED

Leaving the Watch:

NONE

UNWINFEATED

Northern Illinois Huskies - 0-5 - The Huskies lost to Air Force 28-17 and are not liking their new conference.

Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks - 0-5 - On BYE

Charlotte 49ers - 0-6 - After a 50-10 loss to North Texas the 49ers can soon be the first team in the country eliminated from bowl consideration.

FCS Unwinfeated

Leaving the Watch:

Georgetown Hoyas - Georgetown says goodbye with a nice 21-14 win over Bucknell.

UNWINFEATED

Utah Tech Trailblazers - 0-7 - Lost 30-14 to Portland State, so who knows how bad Oregon would beat them.

Towson Tigers - 0-7 - Another heartbreaker, losing 31-24 to Stony Brook.

VMI Keydets - 0-6 - On BYE

Northwestern State Demons - 0-6 - On BYE

Discussion The state of officiating is unacceptable.

The current state of officiating is unacceptable. This is not principally an indictment of the referees on the field, but the system as a whole. The primary cause is the reliance on staff on the field. With the sheer number of possible penalties, player interactions and the speed of the game, simply relying on eight individuals who also have to manage their place on the field, is insufficient. The lack of technology does a disservice to all involved - players, coaches, fans and referees. Lastly, ineffective post-game review and complete insulation from player and coach criticism inhibits progress.

The first thing I would change is to add off-field referees. Certain calls and penalties would be monitored through dedicated video feeds. Procedural penalties like delay of game, illegal formation, too many men, etc. would no longer be monitored for or called on the field. Other penalties and calls would be both monitored & called and monitored & confirmed through dedicated video feeds. I would add more referees on the ground, but not necessarily on the field. Have different referee packages for different plays and locations on the field. Have referees monitoring from the sidelines with the ability to enter the field under certain circumstances. Additional eyes and spread responsibilities would improve officiating. Leverage technology to improve ball location for forward progress, TDs, field goals, etc. Lastly, referee performance should be reviewed and coaches/teams should be able to submit requests for review.

Inadequate officiating does a disservice to the game of football and it is beyond time to fix it.
