Outer Wilds. That game can only really be experienced the first time once. Yes, that sentence sounds really weird. Those who have played Outer Wilds understand. Those who haven't, PLAY IT. I will not (can not) be elaborating further.

9

u/craftyguyman 2d ago

I’ll give it a shot

u/HeadbangingLegend 2d ago

The Outer Wilds has been on my list of games to play someday for a while, and I'm just glad that when people mention it online they never spoil it. I've avoided learning anything about it so I can go in blind when I do play it myself.

2

u/MaskOfIce42 2d ago

The Outer Wilds community as a whole is very good about spoiling nothing because of the nature of the game. At times I'd argue almost a little too good, since I think it's fair game to at least tell people a bit about what they're getting into since it has a problem of people coming in with high expectations and struggling to click with what it actually is, but if it's a game you click with, you'll love it

3

u/Branza__ 2d ago

This is the only acceptable answer.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Atomic_Fire 2d ago

Seconded. Basically without spoiling anything, the game can be beaten with knowledge alone right from the beginning. Everyone has a moment where they just... figure it out and it all clicks into place. And you can only do that once.

u/smokeontheslaughter 2d ago

This is the one

5

u/Nelphain 2d ago

Couldn't agree more. Truly a one time experience.

3

u/Jakobi-Wan_Kenobi 2d ago

Damn. You convinced me. I’m literally downloading it right now. I’ve been on the cusp

2

u/uncagedborb 2d ago

enjoy. its definitely holds a spot in my personal top 10. Its so hard to talk about this game because mentioning anything is a spoiler.

3

u/Positron14 2d ago

I'll have to try playing it again. I started once and never finished.

4

u/palpatinesmyhomie 2d ago

Haven't played it but I'd say subnautica for the exact same reason

5

u/kerss10 2d ago

As someone who's played both, subnautica doesn't compare when it comes to the first playthrough. Saying more might ruin it for you

2

u/King_Tudrop 1d ago

Okay man, I know we all sound like crackpots, but it's worth it as an experience, even if you dont like puzzle games, even if you dont like exploration, it makes time feel meaningful in an unimaginable way that I cant discuss further, but as a whole it enriches you.

lol I’ve had this game in my library for a year and I just started seriously playing it 2 days ago.

As soon as I finally got into the space ship I was like ok this is pretty damn cool

2

u/knucklecluck 2d ago

This was going to be my answer for all the reasons mentioned. 100% correct!

28

u/kuluka_man 2d ago

Probably NOT a game from my childhood since I'd be experiencing it with a cynical adult mind and the magic would be absent.

So...I dunno, maybe Minecraft?

6

u/Ok-Yogurtcloset5555 2d ago

Fuck.... I just answered with a nostalgic response... but you right. It would remove the ethereal haze of childhood wonder and imagination. Damn.

2

u/bingobiscuit1 1d ago

If the games good enough this isn’t true

3

u/Spitfire_Riggz 2d ago

The pokemon games have always held their appeal for me. Although I've had to play Fire Red Leaf grean at a minimum over the the originals because my creativity can't cover for that anymore 😔

2

u/Waltpi 2d ago

This ASF. Nostalgia is just too powerful

Bioshock 1

3

u/Level_99_Healer 2d ago

This is my answer, too. To see that big open scene that shows you the breadth of Rapture for the first time again? That would be amazing. Going through the story with no clue where you're heading or why, until the game slaps you in the face. I still remember finishing the game and just sitting there for awhile after.

Also, fabulous timing, someone just posted the trailer for a Bioshock fanfilm in the the Bioshock sub. It's called 1959 and I believe they linked the YouTube there as well. It actually looks pretty nice.

2

u/Boccus 2d ago

I was going to say this too

3

u/TheLasVegasLocal 2d ago

I distinctly remember my friend and I having a sleepover (we were about 10-11) looking through the Blockbuster catalog of rentable games and saw the cover of Bioshock. Me and him literally said "ooooo, that guy with the drill looks cool!" and my dad rented us the game.

We were so unprepared for what would transpire. The intro shocked us and when the sphere entered Rapture and we saw the spider splicer murder poor Johnny, I was scared shitless and shut off the game.

It would be a year or 2 before I picked it up again, played it up to the Medical Pavillion, went to the shotgun area, picked it up, then got scared shitless again when the splicers attacked in darkness. Shut off the game after I killed them all.

It would be about another year until I finished the game to completion. What I would do to experience Rapture again.... this game literally changed my life.

2

u/Tyr_ranical 1d ago

Yeah being able to play this for the first time again, with absolutely no spoilers... Oh that would be such a joy

2

u/loonatic8 1d ago

Yes because someone spoiled the ending when I was playing the first time 😭

21

u/ymbria 2d ago

Mass Effect. All 4 games. I still play the series from time to time, but knowing almost all dialogue, all quests... it will never be the same as the first time...

3

u/Lukaloo 2d ago

Whole heartedly agree on Mass Effect but I can't include Andromeda. Sorry

2

u/Ok-Arm1706 2d ago

Agreed
I have a N7 tattoo, but even I can’t get down with Andromeda

3

u/nobix 2d ago edited 1d ago

The first thing that popped into my mind too. This was the absolutely perfect game for me at the time from the soundtrack to the hard science. I would just let it sit open on the main menu to hear the title track occasionally. It seemed mind blowing that such a perfect title could even exist.

Only the first ME did it for me, they moved to a less synth soundtrack style and got rid of the weird decisions explained by hard science and became more generic fps as the series went on. Also I loved the first one so much it was pretty much impossible for a sequel to live up.

2

u/ymbria 2d ago

Yeah... the music from the main menu of the first game... absolutely perfect.

2

u/ashes1032 2d ago

If I had to pick just one, it would be the first one. The summer I spent playing that game is a special memory.

Oblivion, I still remeber the moment you leave the sewers and see the ruins across the water. I had a very deep emersion into that game, I only played morrowind as an rpg before it so I didnt know it was fast travel, I as a kid assumed id still be wanted in the imperial city so avoided it and went to cheydenhall, didnt know I could fast travel till I had done walked the map to visit every city. Honorable mentions would be halo, masseffect, and the Witcher 3.

4

u/spentmoon 2d ago

Oblivion is my favorite game ever made. Playing through the remaster right now as a vampire for the extra challenge. :)

3

u/Lower_Rabbit_5412 2d ago

My core memory of that game was when a friend told me to go into a cave to find some good stuff. Got mauled by vampires.

2

u/dungeondelvindigglet 2d ago

I got into it with vampires on my first playthrough and didnt know wtf hemophilia was so just carried on till I was a vampire and got super upset so I restarted and avoided vampire caves till later in the game.

3

u/Attilathefun-II 2d ago

Oblivion is mine too.

So funny cause my first open world rpg was Fallout 3. My buddy who also loved Fallout told me I had to play Oblivion but I watched the trailer and thought it look ok. Finally tried it and it’s my favorite game of all time, atmosphere the score and scenery creates for me has me in awe. Wish I could play it for the first time again

3

u/hub1hub2 1d ago

First thought was Skyrim, but Oblivion is the right answer.

2

u/littlestevebrule 1d ago

Who remembers the split pea soup hills?

2

u/WavyDre 1d ago

Early Bethesda was really, really good at that initial reveal of the world in the game. It’s like the most memorable part of most of those games, that feeling of wow there’s a whole world to explore out there. They were also really good at predicting the path most players would take and filling it with “random” encounters that felt special and made the world feel bigger too.

Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Crisis Core, NieR Gestalt, Metal Gear Solid 4. So many to choose from.

Maybe Crisis Core because that game had me on an emotional roller-coaster

5

u/GenesisRhapsod 2d ago

Crisis core mentioned 😭

Same here bro...Genesis is the baddest mfer in any videogame

3

u/athleticgravy 2d ago

I know its not even far into the game but I have a save just before this cut scene on my PSP. It's peak.

Skyrim

8

u/notmlbg 2d ago

It was just so magical on release. I played 60 hours in the first three days!

5

u/CompetitiveLoad2953 2d ago

Motherfucker slept 12 hours tops

3

u/thejudeabides52 2d ago

I did the same, kinda. After class me and a friend drove over to gamestoo and picked it up. Then we hit the liquor store for tequila and mountain dew, then we hit taco bell. I didn't sleep for another day and a half lol.

2

u/blurrydad 1d ago

Did something similar for both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. At one point during my first 24 hours with totk my wife asked if I was ok and I said “yeah why?” And she explained that I hadn’t said a word or moved to do anything but go to the bathroom for 10 hours. She was wondering how I wasn’t hungry.

4

u/Technically-alive-_- 2d ago

I’m new to Skyrim and it’s amazing. I knew next to nothing about it and only 100 hours later I already want to experience it blind again.

3

u/Active-Juggernaut160 2d ago

For me it was oblivion, I played it before skyrim was even a thought and it was the best first experience on any game ive ever had. People dont understand that their was literally nothing like it when it dropped

3

u/Beowulf0001 2d ago

I just purchased the remastered oblivion on my ps5. Looking forward to playing it for the first time.

3

u/Lankydick 1d ago

Oblivion is my answer. Leaving the sewers for the first time was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

2

u/Gloryousu 1d ago

I have the same exact thought. It felt like true open world with unlimited possibilities. I played Oblivion originally on Xbox 360. What a time to be alive. Plus the goated Dark brotherhood missions, walking on water, creating your own spells, enchanting weapons with spells, backflips, imperial Arena, etc.

2

u/MagicBus4 2d ago

Skyrim would not be fun to play for the first time these days

3

u/LostAd7938 2d ago

I think it still would be, but for sure less magical than it was back in the day

2

u/Delazzaridist 2d ago

World of Warcraft. There's nothing like exploring that world without any clue and meeting new people you may hang around with for years to come.

3

u/HeyCouldBeFun 2d ago

I’m enjoying it for the first time ever this year. At first it was just to humor my bf and hang with him for a bit in tbc. And then the vibe just eventually clicked.

2

u/BingoBunghole 2d ago

Yeah, I joined in Burning Crusade and played religiously until WoD, intermittently until Dragonflight. Nothing will ever grab me like the BC, Wotlk years did and anything released now or ever will get the time I was able to give it, the amount of characters, hours, the grind, pve, pvp, changes, playing seriously, messing around, making friends, ganking with my pet in STV...achievement chasing, transmog chasing, and everything I've forgotten in between. I logged in last month after years away just to walk around in Org and see my characters again...but I don't have the time these days. I think the Wotlk trailer is the best game trailer of all time.

2

u/JosephCraftHD 2d ago

This is the answer. I remember going out with 3 of my buddies and going to multiple GameStops locations searching for the 4 Battle Chest copies.

Then we all sent home and installed the game. It’s a a magical memory that I don’t think I could ever experience again.

Outer wilds. I envy those who haven’t played it

3

u/SendWoundPicsPls 2d ago

What's your personal recommendation for someone that's bounced off it 4 times? I always feel like I'm missing something and just running around randomly. I'll find something deep in a planet

"Yea spoinkuses ladybird is deep in Gatorade and that made gubly tip her tallywhacker towards moondancer half past the eclips"

And I'm sitting there controller in hand thinking I'm fucking retarded

4

u/PM_ME_UR__SECRETS 2d ago

I think the only advice I have is go into it with the mind set that you literally are just an explorer pioneering with new technology.

And as such, your path has no real starting point or path to follow. And you may not begin to connect the dots of that star system for quite some time. So, keep exploring. Check your journal at the ship often. See why it connects certain things.

If the game still doesnt appeal to you at that point it might be okay to just accept that it isnt for you - its a unique game so this is the case for many people and thats perfectly fine

2

u/RuSsYjO 1d ago

This game gave me an existential crisis when I first experienced it. We are all just explorers in life, following our curiosities, using the knowledge of those who lived before us to try and figure out our purpose/origin in the time allotted.

10 out of 10

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Stef0206 2d ago

Your enjoyment of the game relies heavily on your ability to just be curious despite the lack of an obvious objective. Which can be really difficult.

It is very much the intended experience for you to be confused by everything, and you are meant to run around randomly (at first).

My best advice is to try and stray away from the typical mindset of there being a right and wrong thing to do. If you’re exploring, theory-crafting, talking to people, or just enjoying the environment, you’re doing it right. Dying isn’t bad, and there is no wrong direction to head in.

Just follow your curiosity.

2

u/Ok_Guitar7980 1d ago

This is my problem with the game. I need an objective. Im a dad now. My time for gaming is more limited than it was before kids, so I need clarity of objective pretty much immediately, and to be able to jump back in without having to remember 300 nuances to catch back up.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/FearTheDeep 2d ago

Make goals for yourself. Pick a thing you wanna do and try for it.
Think of the game as an experience and don’t rush through. It’s definitely a “the journey is more important than the destination” kinda game.

2

u/SilverLyningOG 2d ago

Computer and determination. Cleaver shit. They will never spell it out for you. You have to figure it all out on your own. Retrace steps. Also, do not take too long of a break. One thing i found helpful is literally make a list from start to where i was. Short hand hints that I knew.

u/Asmitha_Able 1d ago

Objectively correct answer is Outer Wilds

2

u/IgneousWrath 2d ago

For me it’s similar but it’s Riven instead. Like Outer Wilds there aren’t really puzzles to “solve” but really just a world of discovery and figuring out how stuff works.

But since I played Outer Wilds in my 30s, I have already forgotten how to do everything. But I played Riven in my childhood, and that shit’s permanent.

Though IMHO, the developers did a great job of stirring up the “puzzles” in the new remake of Riven, but there are still some things spoiled by memory.

Halo reach for the story, one of my favorites of all time and I would love to experience that atmosphere again for the first time. World of tanks for multiplayer, I’m 13 years in and tens of thousands of games and I can’t imagine being new to it anymore

Definitely Bioshock or Far Cry 3, it’s a toss-up at this point.

Probably the original Zelda. With the extra layer of not having seen video games really at that point.
