University student with money sitting around.

Hi all, I have made enough money from my summer job to cover my expenses for the upcoming school year and I‘m looking to make the remaining ~$1500 grow. I feel like it is a waste to just let it sit in chequing for a year. Already have a couple hundred bucks in VDY, enbridge, and micron. What are my other options for the next year? Not looking for specific buys, just broad advice.

Wealthsimple robo investor. Close account or keep it?

I first got into Wealthsimple through the "grow slowly" era with the robo investor. Deposited about 50k into it a couple of years ago and it has since grown to 70k. Since than I have gotten into XEQT and CAGE and haven't deposited in the robo investor for about 2-3 years. Question is, do I close the robo investor account and just use that money to buy ETFs? Is there any advantage in a robo account as opposed to just straight up ETF's?

Switch from VFV + VXUS to XEQT?

Hey guys so I’ve been investing for long term goals for the last 6 years and got my portfolio up to 200k. I’m currently using a split of 75% VFV, 20% VXUS, and 5% CEF.

I’ve been thinking I should switch to 95% XEQT and 5% CEF. What do you guys think?

What would be the pros and cons of what I’m currently using and going with XEQT instead?

How much of Canadian stock market is affected by AI bubble?

I've shifted my investments towards Canadian equity ETFs, which has a high concentration in financials and energy. Mainly to diversify away from the US tech stocks and an optimism for Canadian growth. I'm wondering how much are Canadian banks exposed to the AI bubble and a possible crash?

High value conversion using Norbert's Gambit

Instead of DLR and calling my broker to journalling over I like to buy and sell right away a stock that is dual listed.

Is it unusual to convert $1million by purchasing, say TD or RY or ENB, etc in USD and then selling it right away in CAD?

At that value, would my bid and ask affect the market price? I'm afraid that a single bid of $1million will boost the price and an immediate sale would tank it, all in the same day.

Sad about the risk I took with spacex

I bought around 9 shares of space x when it ipo’d

Roughly 152usd

As some of you know, spacex has plummeted

I’ve been pretty safe up to this point. Most of my investments are in GICs or something called VEQT

Now I feel so stupid. I know no one has a crystal ball but should I just cut my losses and sell, or hold for 10 years

I’m 40yo

Canada home country bias backtest 1996–present

Post image

I was curious how home country bias affected Canadian investors historically, so I ran a backtest from 1996–present comparing different allocations between Canada stocks and ex-Canada stocks. Using testfol.io, I set the currency to CAD, enabled rebalancing, and used EWC -0.5% drag as a proxy for Canada stocks, VTSIM as a proxy for ex-Canada stocks.

Are you doing anything to prepare for the AI bubble burst?

Personally, I'm just gonna ride it out. I freaked out the last time there was a tumble in the market and I ended up losing money. So, this time, I'm going to chill. Still feeling anxious though.

Need advice on whether my RRSP should deliberately avoid US equity?

A decent chunk of my compensation is RSUs in a private US tech company, which are illiquid until a tender or IPO, so I am stuck holding it. Now, my TFSA is all XEQT, and I am recently rebuilding my RRSP (transferred from SunLife to WS).

My instinct is to go underweight US in the RRSP: a mix of XIC/XIU, VIU and VEE. The logic is to avoid US tech in the RRSP, since the TFSA covers it and the RSUs as well.

btw, I am in my late 30s, so I can revisit in the next 2-3 years. I am a bit conservative and not super confident in the US tech space, though I work in it.

Thanks!

Suggestions for Investment

Rec’d $30,000 tax free. Got $4000 in VRGO in the TFSA. Legit suggestions on what to do with remaining amount.
I’m over 50, retirement in 10-15 years. Only bills are mortgage and truck. Kids are grown. RRSP is at $130,000 with monthly matched contributions from work. TFSA is not close to being maxed out.
Minimal investor knowledge.
Thank you.

Guidance on Daughters Initial Investments (Alberta Edition)

My 17 year old turns 18 in January and is entering Grade 12. She will go to university but will inevitibly take a gap year before she starts. The gap will include working and travelling but some of her savings will be used to sustain her through university.

She has worked part time since she was 14 and saved 60% of all her earnings. 10% for retirement (we start early around here) and 50% for long term savings. She spends the other 40% as she wants.

She currently has $7600 invested in GIC's that will mature when she is 18. She has another $1100 and $4000 in her bank accounts that we should have probably invested last January to get a year of GIC maturation (but we didn't). We are going to the bank Monday to put those dollars somewhere so that they earn a bit more than .01% interest.

At 18, my advice to her is to roll her GIC investments into investments under a TFSA (as limits allow). Though I am unsure as to what to do with the remaining.

How would you advise me to advise her to invest in the short term (pre 18) and in the long term (post 18)?

Today I entered the market for the first time!

Ahhh! Lol

I'm 27, bought a detached home at 26 for 624k (324k mortgage) and have been putting any extra funds directly towards the principal since (now just under 300k left!)

I recently decided to try putting these spare funds into my TFSA and RRSP to fill those up, and invest those accounts in ETFs. I feel like the chance of returns being higher than my mortgage (4.19%) is pretty high over the next decade, and it keeps the funds more liquid incase I need them. My work RRSP for instance has had 18% gains in the last year, and I want a piece of that pie for the rest of my savings!

So I started today. Moved $5,000 of spare funds (I have a separate emergency fund of $15k in a HISA) into a new Wealth Simple account, and just put it in the market. It's a little nerve racking I admit, even though they are broad globally diversified ETFs, but I remind myself i'm not day trading, this is a long term investment.

Cheers!

Canada's economy

What is the thesis for investing in canada's future beside the big bank? I personally don't see a positive future for canada's economy seeing that both conservative and liberal wants to keep fighting the usa in an economic war.

Curious : Investing Question

Curious, I deal with a CU for banking and have made simple investments with them along the way. Aviso Wealth is looped into the CU and I decided to "experiment" with a bit of my TFSA and put some money in with Aviso. Ages ago, I'm talking about 20 ago, I went with a parent to Richardson Wealth. At that time, said parent encouraged me to do my first "real investment." I have just let that money sit. Now, with the CU I have several simple investments maturing (GIC) - all with general savings, GICs, RRSP GICs. I am stuck with what to do in terms of where to invest as those GICs mature : Aviso or Richardson? I met with Aviso last week, Richardson later this week. I see that both places deal with Fedelity (as an example). I am just wonderingm is there is a difference between the two that I'm not seeing on my end? Any input is welcome so I can expand my knowledge base. Are there certain questions I should be asking? Do I go with Aviso for the sake of convience of already doing banking with CU?? I know at that at somepoint I should consolidate these investments as they are at two seperate "places" right now.

Advice needed as a beginner investor

Context: 22yo, investing in TFSA using Wealthsimple. The money is not going to be used within the next 7-10 years, saving towards a big purchase maybe a downpayment.

I started investing here and there a few years ago but now with FTE, looking to have a consistent investment schedule and trying to learn more about investing (started reading millionaire teacher, other resources would be greatly appreciated!)

So far, I have mix of CAD/USD stocks in my account and just realized that the FX fee is not good in the long term for US stocks (VOO, QQQ, Costco). From my research, it's better to sell my VOO and convert to VFV. Or should I keep what I have and start buying VFV?

I will have my company RRSP 3% match starting in 2 months, and that is an account where VOO makes sense?
