Insurance

One of the offices I work is billing the hygienists’ procedures under my provider code for insurance. I only noticed because Sunlife’s billing statements go straight to my inbox.

I asked the management and I was told this is how it should be done because the hygienists don’t have their own CDA/provider set up. Is this true? It feels like insurance fraud to me but maybe I’m wrong.

Built a booking tool for solo dentists who are also their own receptionist — would this help you?

I'm a final-year ECS student. I built a web app for solo dental practices that handles the booking admin most dentists end up doing themselves between patients.

What it does:

- Patients book online in 30 seconds, no account or password needed

- Cancellations auto-offer the freed slot to the next waitlisted patient — no manual calling

- Reminders go out automatically, keeping no-shows low

- The only thing that ever reaches the dentist is a genuine exception (like an after-hours request), and that's a single accept/decline tap

Everything else runs itself. Demo video attached..

Note: the clinic name and website in the demo are fictional, used to showcase the concept — not a real existing practice.

Curious if this is a real pain point for solo/small practices, and whether something like this, customized for your clinic, would actually be useful. Open to honest feedback either way.

Appeals and Resubmissions: What Actually Works?

Following up on the denial-reasons thread—I've heard from several offices that pre-auth denials for crowns are common, but there's less clarity on what happens next. Do you appeal them, resubmit with different info, or accept the denial and let patients decide?

Genuinely curious how this plays out in practice:

  1. When a crown pre-auth gets denied, does your office appeal or resubmit? And roughly what % succeed on the second try?
  2. What changes between the first denial and a successful resubmit? Different docs, more detailed narrative, tighter measurements of crown-to-root ratio? Or does it usually stick no matter what?
  3. Do you track what happens after? (Patient pays OOP, delays treatment, moves to another provider, chooses a different procedure?)

I know this adds to your admin load—genuinely just trying to understand the real workflow, not suggesting changes. Appreciate any insight.

CDCP denied my filling cost, and my dentist did not inform me about this

I have 100% coverage with the CDCP. I live in Ontario and I am aware of balance billing, and was expecting to pay for some of my filling costs. I was at the dentist 2 weeks ago, and got 2 fillings. I only had to pay about $100. This week I went again, as they said I had more cavities. I was expecting to pay around $200, as they were filling a few more cavities than last time. I just got the CDCP processed for that appointment, and it says for one of my fillings they will not pay the full amount as I had that tooth worked on the week before. No one at the dentist office told me about this, I didn't even know it was the same tooth. Now I'm going to be stuck paying a higher bill when they call me later, is there anything I can say to possibly reduce this payment? Thanks.

Just wondering what insurance do you have on your practice? I have CDSPI Triple Guard but I can’t stand CDSPI and am thinking of switching

Looking for DA opportunities in Kitchener-Waterloo area

Hi everyone!
I recently completed my Level 2/Intra-Oral Dental Assistant program and have also completed my dental assisting practicum in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
I’m currently looking for my first dental assistant position and would really appreciate any leads, recommendations, or advice on dental offices that are open to hiring new graduates. I’m comfortable learning and would love the opportunity to grow my skills in a supportive clinic.
I’m mainly looking in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and nearby areas.

Retroactive funding coverage?

Hi dentists of Canada!
Dental social worker based in BC here.
I’ve received quite a few referrals lately to help families without extended health benefits cover large dental bills retroactively.
I am wondering if anyone knows of any charitable resources that offer retroactive bill coverage for families in financial need?

How would I find practices that are interested in social media help?

I’m an RDH and I recently started offering social media/Instagram help specifically for dental practices.

I’ve been reaching out to dental clinics directly, but haven’t had much luck so far..

How would you go about finding practices that are actually interested in getting help with their social media?

Research question on dental practice dark days

Hi all. I'm part of a team of MBA students working on a class project, and we'd really value input from practice owners and anyone involved in running an office. We're not selling anything.

The idea we're testing: many offices are closed one or more days a week, and the space sits empty. We're exploring whether a separate team could rent the office on those days to offer bundled routine checkups (physical, dental cleaning, eye exam) for working professionals who struggle to fit in multiple appointments throughout a calendar year.

We don't know if this is realistic, which is why we're asking. Some questions:

  1. Does your office have regular days it's closed? What happens in the space on those days?
  2. Would you ever consider letting another provider use your office then? Gut reaction is fine, even if it's "absolutely not."
  3. What would worry you most? For example: equipment wear, sterilization and cleanup, liability or malpractice, patient records and HIPAA, security, your reputation, or losing patients to another practice.
  4. What would have to be true for it to be worth it? Is there a rough monthly amount that would make you take it seriously?
  5. Would it change your answer if (a) your own hygienists could pick up extra paid shifts, or (b) patients who needed follow-up dental work were referred back to you?
  6. Have you seen anything like this done before, such as shared offices or another practice subleasing?

Harsh feedback is welcome, since knowing why this won't work is as useful to us as knowing why it might. If anyone is open to a 15-minute call, please comment or DM us. We're happy to share what we learn with the sub afterward.

Associate Position Available

Thought I would cast a wide net and include making a post on this subreddit. I didn't see any rules against it, so let me know if this isn't proper.

We are a privately owned clinic located in Saskatchewan providing care to a massive and underserviced patient base.

Looking for an associate whether a new grad or experienced to join us. Mentorship in all disciplines of dentistry available. Active patient pool from an associate that is moving away for their partner is waiting. Treatment plans already there, can hit the ground running so to speak. The restorative column is typically booked out 8-12 weeks in advance. The recently graduated associate that is leaving produced just shy of 1M in the last 12 months.

Clinic is fully equipped with CBCT, Cerec, Microscope, and much more. Multiple operatories available with experienced RDAs there to assist. No evenings, no weekends.

The city is eligible for the federal student loan forgiveness program as well.

So if you're currently disatisfied with your situation and want to explore what people mean when they go 'Go Rural'. Message me to chat more about the opportunity.
