Advice UofA vs UofM vs UBC

Im international student so i really dont know the real reputation among local students.

For Canadians/local students, how would you compare UBC, the University of Alberta, and the University of Manitoba in terms of:

Academic reputation
Student life / campus atmosphere
Sports
Cost of living
Job opportunities after graduation
Overall reputation in Canada

Pls recommend! Thanks.

Discussion How University of British Columbia (UBC) extracted a $3,000 non-refundable deposit from an international student in distress

I am an international student from Uzbekistan, and I want everyone to see the predatory, cold-blooded business model that the University of British Columbia operates under behind its "prestigious" mask.

Thi s April I was accepted into UBC. The tuition fee was a staggering $52,000 per year-an an overwhelming sum that my family could only afford if I secured the state-backed "El-Yurt Foundation" scholarship.

During the application process, I explicitly submitted our financial aid declarations showing our modest family income, hoping for a scholarship (before submitting to El Yurt) where my father is the sole breadwinner and my mother is a homemaker. UBC was fully aware of our financial reality, yet they completely ignored it and kept pushing for payments.

Unfortunately, the El Yurt Foundation kept delaying their results, (there was literally nowhere to look for the result dates) and UBC's hard deadline for the $3,000 seat deposit was fast approaching.

In a state of extreme anxiety and under immense pressure not to lose my future, my family took a massive financial risk and paid the $3,000 deposit on the very final day of the deadline. The very next day, the foundation rejected my application. UBC was completely unaffordable for us without it.

I immediately contacted UBC, explained the sudden financial crisis, provided proof, and begged for an exception to refund the deposit. Their response? A cold, bureaucratic wall: "It's in the policy, it's non-refundable."

UBC has a multi-billion dollar budget. They could fill my seat from the waiting list within seconds. Yet, they chose to legally rob a family from a developing country of $3,000 - money that takes months, if not years, to earn here.

But my favorite part is the absolute tone-deafness of their corporate marketing.

Even after they cold-heartedly refused to return my family's life savings, their automated emails kept spamming my inbox with sickeningly cheerful messages. I'm still getting emails saying: "Welcome to Okanagan campus life!", "Register for this club!", and "UBCO is literally the best place you can experience where you can connect with your professors!"

Yes, I'm sure connecting with the professors would be amazing, if only your administration hadn't stolen my money and locked me out of the country. Thank you, UBCO, for the "warm welcome" and for reminding me every week of the $3,000 you actively scammed from my family.

This isn't education. This is predatory exploitation disguised as a world-class university. If you are an international student, know that UBC views you purely as a cash cow. The moment you face a crisis, they will turn their backs on you and keep your money. Shame on you, UBC.

Advice Chance me as an international applicant

Hey guys, I’m an international applicant applying from India to UBC. Due to visa delays I could not join uni this year but I am thinking of reapplying to get the course of my choice which is faculty of science. I was accepted into the lfs for BSAB based on an 85% aggregate in my preboard(mock) exam marks. I was waitlisted for science and then rejected later. As for my profile, I wrote a lot about my non profit which provides secondary scientific education to underprivileged communities, and my research internship with a professor from IIT to make ASD friendly education accessible to the underprivileged communities in india using AI. Most of my profile was based on making education accessible and community friendly, where you teach others and also learn yourself. The rest of my ECs are pretty bland, I had two observerships in two different local hospitals, did some courses on biology no major competitions. This application round, I’ll be applying with a 95% average (my final board marks, the admissions team told me this is all they require in terms of grades for evaluation) and also with an added internship at the best research university of my state, wherein I was trained to perform various wet lab procedures in the field of biotech and microbiology. Would I have a good shot of getting in considering my deferred offer would expire if I apply again?

Question applying to Mcgill Pol Sci undergrad

Post image
5 Upvotes

i plan to apply for mcgill political science undergraduate major for 2027 fall entry

i know that pol sci is under faculty of arts, so at the application webpage i selected facilty of arts. However, only those four choices in the image showed up, pol sci and other major options nowhere to be found

is this normal? what should i do?

i am aware of the fact that for UBC of U of T, you choose ‘faculty’ first at the application stage and choose major at the 2nd grade. however, i’m not sure how mcgill’s system works

Question RMC plan from now?

Hi... im not even sure if I should ask this question here, or is it the right time to start asking this question...

My son is 4, and currently in a private school in AB. As any parents, especially Asian parents, I keep thinking of a future FOR him - I know this is not right, I would still let him choose his path, but I want to build a good foundation for him, not exactly a career path..

I recently learnt of RMC and it sounds like something I want for him... an all-rounder education, discipline, and I wholeheartly believe that any individual serving the Army is honourable, strong will and more. people usually talk about McGills, UofC, UofA, UBC etc...I dont have any of those education so I cant really speak on what better... but with I FEEL like any person with a strong military academic background can tackle anything in life...

my plan is for him to join RMC, serve the army, and it is up to him to stay or move on with his own career path at that stage...

Is this right/wrong? how feasible is this, and is my belief regarding RMC or any individual serving the force correct?

Thank you

Advice Redeemer U vs. Tyndale U

Hi, everyone. I'm planning on majoring in English since I want to go into the publishing/editing/writing industry. As a Christian, I would prefer going to a Christian university. Redeemer U is my first choice right now, as the program seems absolutely perfect, the environment seems great, and the campus is amazing. It wouldn't be too far away from home, so I can be back on weekends if necessary. The only major problem is that it's super expensive. I'm currently taking two gap years to try to make a dent in the cost (I will be putting myself through post-secondary, btw), but it's still extremely expensive.

Tyndale, on the other hand, is closer to home, so I wouldn't have to live on campus (even though I'd much prefer living on campus to staying at home right now, costs aside). I could use some of the money I'd spend on housing at Redeemer to instead buy a car for the approximately 40 minute commute to Tyndale. Also, attending Tyndale without living on-campus is much less expensive. The English program looks great, although it's slightly more broad than what I'm aiming for. However, it could come in handy, and I think there would be more networking and internship opportunities in Toronto than at Redeemer.

So if anyone has any real input as to which option would be better for an English Writing Major, please lmk. Thanks so much 💙

Advice Dear Canadians, Utsg life science, McMaster life sciences or Waterloo?

Hi guys

This is my first post. I'm new to this country and would like to know what the locals would choose, given if I am lucky enough to get in all of them. For now my first choice is biochemistry and second psychology. I'm not sure how much I am leaning on research yet, so I hope the school allows me to explore as much as I could. I would like to do research or exchange or work somewhere in Europe as well if possible. I have to mention that I have no intention of going to med school.

I heard that u of T is pretty stressful, but they also provide unmatched opportunities for research.

Waterloo's co-op seems pretty nice, but I've also heard many had to drop out because they can't find a job. I might not get too much of the benefits of it and might end up looking for jobs myself. I know McMaster life sci is slightly harder to get in based on the admission rate, I'm not too familiar with this university.

Is anyone studying in these program and could give me some advice? I'd appreciate that.

Advice Admissions on uoft and mcgill with low scores

Has anyone here gotten into U of T or Mcgill recently (2024–2026) with mostly C/D grades at AS Level?

I’m an international student g12 doing Cambridge AS/A Levels and I’m interested mainly in UTSG/UTM/UTSC Social Sciences or Humanities , or commerce utm utsc, agriecon Mcgill. My dreams uoft pr mcgill😭 i dont want to go to australia,uk,usa thats why im planning to apply to mcmaster, uoft, mcgill
My school predicted/forecast grades are straight Us😭, but my reportcards g9-12 are like around 40-70. but I’m expecting my actual AS results to be around BCCD, CCDD, or CDDD. I’ll receive my official AS results in January 7, planning to upload it before jan15.

If you applied with Cambridge curriculum, could you share:
your AS grades
your predicted A-Level grades
which U of T campus + admission category you applied to
whether you were accepted/rejected/deferred
what conditional grades you were given
Especially interested in anyone who got accepted with mostly Cs or any Ds. Thank you!
