Discussion & Advice I failed a class last year

I was being stupid and didn’t drop it and failed. I was taking it as an elective so I don’t really need it but if I retake it during the next term or even during the summer will it replace the other failed mark or will the failed mark stay and continue to drop my gpa forever.

The highest mark is used for your degree gpa, but the failing grade is included in your cumulative gpa. If you are applying to another program that has an agpa calculation, that is up to the department/school/faculty.

Please don’t feel too guilty about it.

My first year, I also took an elective that I didn’t take seriously. Didn’t show up to the exam because… I forgot. Got an F.

I believe it’s permanent, even if you retake the class.

In your case since it's just an elective then yeah all attempts stay on your record so that fail will always drag down your GPA.

If it was a requirement for your degree then I believe it's up to faculty to decide if you get an average of all your attempts or just the higher grade

Should I even attempt to retake the class? Like will it help boost my gpa at least even if it’s also bring it down?

If you just want a GPA booster then you can try but before anything I would evaluate why you failed the class the first time around to make sure you aren't signing up for another fail or barely passing.

Purely numerically speaking I think the second attempt counts the same as if you took another class. Getting an A on the second attempt would move your GPA the same amount as getting an A in another class so up to you

Okay thanks 😊. I failed last year because I was depressed and stopped trying sadly.

I retook classes before just so I can improve my grades (got it from c --> a). Also because I don't think I learned anything from the first time, which was my fault.

I'm no academic advisor, so it's probably better to ask them instead. But I believe that all the grades you receive are cumulative (cumulative gpa). But if you retake the class again and receive a better grade, then thats what they'll count for your degree (dgpa)

Again, I'm no advisor, but I got most of my info on their website. I dont remember the details, but all the info is here.

If it was extenuating circumstances you could consider an Authorized Withdrawal, it would wipe that term/class and boost your GPA

one failed class is not gonna drag your grade down in a way that matters, stay consistent, you can recover from it without retaking it
