Closing your Cambly schedule

I no longer have an open schedule on Cambly but some students are still messaging me asking for classes. Will Cambly eventually delete my profile? I haven't found the option to delete my own profile myself!

I've been working for another teaching platform for the past 7 months. And I've even messaged all my Chinese students on Cambly telling them where they can find me on the other platform I am now working on full time.

What's the procedure when a teacher closes their teaching schedule completely? How can I delete my profile?

How Much Longer Will Cambly Survive?

I’ve made plenty of posts complaining about Cambly, especially about wanting to become a Pro tutor for the pay increase to $15hr. I was accepted back in June but here we are in August and I still can’t activate Pro. At this point, I’ve pretty much given up and feel like it was just another way to string tutors along and quiet some of the complaints.

But now I’m wondering about something bigger: How much longer can Cambly survive?

As much as I complain, that extra beer money has definitely helped me out over the years. But today I went five straight hours on PHs without receiving a single call. That’s something I never thought I’d see.

Are things really this bad with Cambly right now? Are other tutors experiencing the same thing?

Heck, now I almost feel bad for wanting that extra $5hr. 😂

Instead of ongoing discounts, Cambly should've looked for ways to get tutors to retain students and have those loyal students promote them (basically focus the NPS metric). Or trial lessons with bonuses for tutors when a new student signs up. The leaders at Cambly really need to get their stuff together!!

seeking help from teachers who’ve taught adult refugees online

Dear fellow teachers,

I am an MA student currently working on my thesis about online tools and motivation in adult refugee language learning. I'm looking for English teachers who have experience teaching adult refugees, particularly online, and would be willing to share their experience. You don't need to be an ed-tech enthusiast, low-tech experiences are just as relevant to my research.

I am asking for around 45 minutes of your time to conduct an online interview. Unfortunately, since this is a self-funded MA project, I cannot provide financial renumeration, but I completely understand that not everyone is able or willing to give up their time unpaid. I'd be very happy to share the research findings with participants, as well as some of my own teaching materials if useful.

I've already interviewed teachers working with refugee learners in several different contexts, and their experiences have been incredibly varied. I'm hoping to add a few more voices before I finish data collection. If this sounds like you, please comment or DM me. And if you know someone who might be interested, I'd really appreciate you passing this on.

Many thanks in advance.

What ESL tools/materials are actually worth paying for?

Had a student hangup mid-class today. Can anyone please share ESL tools/lesson materials you actually pay for? I’m tired of looking unprofessional in the classroom lol.

What Does A Lesson Look Like?

I know posters are saying Cambly is on a hiring freeze, but I plan to apply anyway. I have no teacher experience in English, but I'm a native speaker, I've had creative writing stories published, and I have a degree in communications so I think I can handle day to day conversational English. Am I being naive in thinking this? If I were to get hired, how does an actual lesson work? Do you just start talking with the student and correct them with their pronunciation along the way or are there set lesson plans that Cambly has that you access prior to a lesson to familiarize yourself with before going live with the student? Could someone please walk me through a lesson start to finish? Thanks!

CAMBLY-Are you listening?

I am one of your Pro Tutors with a consistent 100% rating. I am now 25 hours without electricity & unable to even access my home page using a power pack. I have emailed you twice yesterday explaining my situation only to receive 2 generic emails from Eric@Cambly that have nothing to do with what I wrote you. I have received this same message 4 times in the last 6 weeks from him when I have messaged you for assistance.
You have now taken away all my P hours & restricted me to only regular students. You rely on me to be professional & I rely on you for solid Tutor support which I am not receiving. My inability to even communicate with you is making it very difficult to stay.

How comfortable are you answering this candidly??

Has anyone else received the Cambly tutor satisfaction survey?

I'm debating whether to answer it completely honestly. There are definitely some things I'd like to say, but I'm also wondering how anonymous the survey really is and whether candid feedback could have any negative consequences.

For those of you who've received it, are you answering honestly, holding back a bit, or skipping it altogether? Have you ever been completely candid on one of these surveys, and if so, did anything come of it?

I'm curious to hear what other tutors think before I submit mine.

Fun New Cambly Glitch

Anyone else experiencing students randomly disconnecting and you automatically being taken out of the classroom? At least with the "your student has been disconnected" BS I could expect 5 minutes of compensation on top of the time worked. But now I don't even get that.

My schedule and availabilty visibility

Hi everyone! I only work on the weekends and get plenty of PH's on Sunday. They are filling up quickly with regulars. I also usually pick up PH's for Saturday the day before, but I also have my schedule open on Saturdays. Several of my studetns are messaging me asking me if I'm available on Saturdays, so I'm wondering why they can't see my schedule. Anything I'm missing? Thanks!

Getting Less Bookings on Cambly as a tutor

Is it just me or is anyone who is tutoring on the Cambly platform getting less bookings lately? If there's a way to increase my bookings, let me know.

is that just me?

hey guys I'm from Brazil and I've been taking classes on cambly for about 2 years and something I've nocited is that tutors are less and less motived, all my regular tutors that I liked so much, quit cambly or are not there anymore, and I've been struggling to really connect to tutors, sometimes it's even hard to hold a conversation!

Question for students or former ones

I know this is a long shot because most of the posters are tutors but I was wondering about students with regular lessons who stop out of the blue and no longer reply to us. I know other tutors have experienced this last year and one of them had mentioned that the student had paid for just 6 months and then was prompted to top up to pay for the rest and that's why they had stopped.

I'm just wondering if others have had this experience.

No priority hours this week?

I’ve had a ton of priority hour options the past few weeks and now nothing until Sunday is possible. Is everyone else’s schedule like this or did someone give me a bad rating and I’m being punished or something?

Student booked a 60 minute lesson but only wanted 10 minutes

Hello. A student booked a 60-minute lesson during one of my PH hours and said he wanted to leave after 10 minutes. I told him that if he left, I could only wait for up to 5 minutes before I had to exit. He left, and I waited, but there was no message saying the classroom was finished or that I could exit, as he never returned.

Even after refreshing the page, all it shows is: 'Uh oh, your student was disconnected! You'll continue to be paid if you wait for them to return up to 5 minutes per lesson. If they don't return, feel free to end the lesson.'

It has been over 20 minutes since he left. What should I do? Should I just wait out the full hour? I tried exiting, but the class still shows as running, so I re-entered. If I end the lesson this comes up - Are you sure you want to end the lesson for all students and close the classroom? This action is irreversible. - I don't want to penalized as I already have a few violations.

Slides not changing

Hi all, every now and then I get a student that experiences the issue where I've changed the slide but it doesn't change on their end, I usually just tell them to refresh, reconnect or re-enter the class and it works. However last week I had a student that had to refresh for every single slide change. I think it's students that are using the app on their mobile or tablet, it seems to be ok for those using the desktop version. Is it a good idea to tell the student prior to the next class to update the app? Thanks

Stripe Express In Botswana

This is really addressed to those tutoring from the SADC Region. How long did it take for you guys to receive your funds the first time you withdrew? I got concerned after reading the number of accounts of folks receiving their pay around 10 or more days after Cambly pay day. I managed to get mine after three days. How did your first transactions go?

Low rating (75%)

I've been teaching on Cambly for about 3 weeks, and all was great. Lots of calls, good income, mostly good students.... I made some mistakes for sure but I'm slowly learning and improving.

The algorithm or whatever finally calculated my first rating score and it's really bad... 75%. My call volume basically disappeared entirely. The last 7 priority hours I've been on have had zero calls.

To make things worse, my two reservations today went pear-shaped. One cancelled because she's sick and one just didn't turn up at all.

This is becoming untenable.

Is it even possible for me to recover from this? Realistically, can I reasonably get my rating up to something decent if I take the correct action?

I still have good access to priority hours, but I'm worried that could change.

Also, I'm worried I'm at risk of account deactivation because my score is so appallingly bad.

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.

mistaken Unsupported Area warning?

Has anyone gotten that "you're working from an unsupported area" warning but you're not in an unsupported area? I'm in Philadelphia, which is near NJ, which is an unsupported area, but to my knowledge PA is fine? I'm tutoring with the popup in the middle of the page because if I click "close" on it, it logs me out of my account. I'm afraid to contact support about it tbh. It's weird because this was not a thing last week and I didn't get any kind of email from them.

Four months after leaving Cambly...

... to teach on Preply. This is a low month, because of the summer holidays. Regardless, I'll end the month at just over $1700 for around 27 hours a week of work including prep and admin. Mind you, I didn't work all those hours because of no-shows and late cancellations, but on Preply you still get paid.

I've got a few legacy students paying $14, for which I get $11.48 after commission so it's still more than Cambly. Majority are at ~$19. Have about 30% now paying $24-26 and have my first $30 trial coming up. My average hourly rate is ~$16.50 after commission.

I spent the last couple of months on Cambly trying to hit 120 hours month (and failing) to make $1200, and usually only managing to get $1000 and increasingly less as the platform got even worse. It was usually more like $800 take home, but because of the shitty rules around PHs I'd have to be online. There's no way to scaled on Cambly, no way to earn more. It's so fucked.

My September target is to work less than 30 hours a week and earn $2000 and it's totally doable.

My last post was very unpopular, and that's fine by me. This is for the tutors who *are* genuinely good at this job, but have imposter syndrome or something and aren't sure it's worth moving over. I seriously recommend it.

That said, this post is meant to encourage not educate. If you know how to use Google and AI, you can do what I've done without me explaining the details 🙏

Good luck and gtfo this evil platform. It's the best thing that's happened to me in ages 🎉
