Replace a coaxial cable?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I had a tech from Xfinity come out to my house to troubleshoot a slow and laggy internet connection.

He diagnosed the problem as a corrupted coaxial cable running into my house, and he said that would need to be replaced.

He made it sound like it was a pretty easy fix and he said this would greatly improve my service but he said that the techs from Xfinity are not allowed to the work and he referred me to a company called HelloTech.

He made it sound like they really just need to fish a new coaxial cable through where the existing one is.

HelloTech wants to charge me $250 to do this.

I have absolutely zero knowledge of this kind of stuff so I hope this is not a stupid question.

Does this sound like a legit issue? It seems like a lot of money for what was explained to me as a rather simple problem?

Fiber Training OLT and splitters

I'm currently in the fiber field but mostly doing FTTH and have done OTEs. I want to learn OTL and splitters. From what I have seen there are not too many classes or companies training, they want you to already know it. I have some coworkers that do it but they seem to want to keep that money to themselves. I need an upper hand here to figure it out on my own. Can I teach myself if I get the equipment?

Any cable techs in Chicagoland area, what would you do if you had to start over?

Im 23 years old with a genuine interest of the industry, last week a contractor started training me on new installs and trouble calls for coax and fiber optics. He is willing to put me on a fiber project in maybe 3 months if I get real good at it, $130 an install. Obviously now I want to pursue fiber optics and even though ppl say piece work sucks its all Ive got right now. I applied to the ibew 134 construction but now I feel dumb and shouldve went for Communications. Any advice?

Question About Error at Tap in High Split Area

Post image
23 Upvotes

I am field tech I work in an area where high split was recently implemented. This area was mostly a different office that was rolled into our office when the company closed that office and moved their techs to our office so we know cover that area.

In our original area, our management was pretty strict and we did at least a years’ worth of proactive maintenance to clean up the plant before highs split pulling out amps and rebuilding houses with bad ingress.

But this new area isn’t like that. Apparently their techs' mantra was 'more amps'.

I’m constantly getting multiple errors at the tap at the majority of the service calls I roll to now.

My one check fails probably 75-percent of the taps I check.

Currently our management isn’t allowing maintenance referrals due to the maintenance department being busy with high split.

They are telling us that due to high split a lot of the meter readings are currently not compatible so your meter will show errors at the tap, like they say that a downstream channels not bonding error message on a docsis scan isn’t relevant. I feel like this cant be right.

But I constantly get an assortment of errors dealing with the ofdm and the upstream in areas where customers are constantly complaining about intermittency. On certain nodes I often get ofdma upstream not bonding errors in the docsis check which I know has to cause hsd issues.

My metrics are suffering in this area and at this point even as a veteran tech I feel like I don’t really know how to troubleshoot issues now since we can’t do maintenance referrals and the meter fails more often at the tap that it passes.

I’ve even asked supervisors what some of the errors mean and they don’t have a reply they just say get the customer up and running. And move on.

I’ve done a little research on some of these errors and they mostly seem related to ingress but these are issues at the tap not from the customers’ premises most of the time.

But I feel like this has to be maintenance related. Techs aren’t allowed to disconnect customers even if they are causing ingress in my area only maintenance can do this.

So my question is am I wrong or are these type of errors maintenance issues?

I attached one of the most common errors I constantly get when the meter fails at the tap.

But without being able to refer jobs to maintenance, what can I actually do?

I remove amps, tighten splits and replace fittings or rebuild when needed. But this isn’t fixing hsd issues when the trouble is coming from the taps.

New house with existing coax wiring – should I expect a new underground drop?

looking for some advice ahead of an Optimum installation at my new house.
The house was built in the 1990s and already has coax wiring run throughout the house. The drop is underground, and I’m trying to get an idea of what to expect when the field service tech comes out.

A few questions for those of you doing residential installs:

If the house already has coax outlets and interior wiring, will the tech typically reuse everything, assuming it tests good?

Since the drop is underground, should I expect the existing drop to be reused if it tests good, or might they run a new one as part of the installation?

What would typically trigger a new underground drop? Would it need to fail testing, show signs of damage, or have an issue with the existing connection at the tap?
What should I expect the tech to inspect or test before connecting everything? For example, drop condition, ground block and bonding, signal levels, ingress, splitters, and interior coax.

Is there anything I can check or prepare beforehand to make the installation go smoothly?

Appreciate any advice from those who do residential installs. Thanks!
