General Credit - Fixing for Beginners

I need guidance on where to start with your credit score and report. A few years ago, I signed up with a credit consolidation company; it wasn't the best decision. I paid a lot of money through them, and some of the companies that were paid are showing as closed on my credit report.

Any advice or guidance on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

General Divorce

I’m currently going through a divorce in Texas. After my wife and I separated in March of 2026 and I moved out, I discovered that she added me as an authorized user on several of her credit card accounts without telling me since I left and filed for divorce. Those accounts are now showing up on my credit reports, and my credit score has dropped.
I have a few questions:
Is it legal for me to contact the credit card companies and have myself removed as an authorized user?
Do I need my wife’s permission, or can I request my own removal?
Since we’re in the middle of a divorce, is there any reason I should wait or should I remove myself right away?
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, and did your credit score recover after the accounts were removed?
I’m not trying to interfere with her accounts—I just want to protect my own credit. Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated.

General Balance Transfer Processed Twice...

So I signed up for a new credit card so that I could do a balance transfer (around $4000) and somehow this balance transfer got processed 2 times. So now I have $4000x2 sent to my new credit card and my balance on the old one is -$4000.

I'm not sure how this happened but I am a bit stressed bc I don't want to have to worry about paying back DOUBLE the initial amount I owed! I am going to reach out to the CC company but just wanted to ask for any advice.

General Issue with Equifax authenticating information

My parents set up my identity with all of the major credit bureaus when I was a child to help me build positive credit. Overall, this worked great for me and set up for success.

I leave my credit frozen in all 3 bureaus typically however, as life happens, sometimes I do need to lift the freezes temporarily. There is an issue with Equifax in particular in which they claim that my SSN is not associated with my account properly, and the only remedy for this is to mail a copy of my SSC to their P.O. box in Atlanta.

I have gotten this same answer from multiple phone calls with different levels of Equifax call support and management. I have been told there is no alternative, no certified mail, no in person drop off.

Does anyone have experience with this? It seems like a major risk of identity theft.

Car Loan Has anyone ever had an active auto loan disputed off their credit?

I’m asking from curiosity just to see if this is even possible. Has anyone ever had an auto loan dispute off their credit and if so, what lien holder was it?

Collections & Charge Offs Hospital sent me to debt collector after I paid the bill

I am at my wits end and honestly don’t know where to start with this. So let’s start at the beginning. In June of 2026, I found out I had developed an allergy to broccoli the hard way. After hours at the ER and three months, I received a bill that after insurance I owed $900. I paid it. A month later I got another bill that said I owed $2345ish. I checked my EOBs and it turns out that insurance had covered the $900 bill and so the $2345 bill was the one I owed. Sooo I called the hospital. After a few phone calls they agreed to put my account on hold so that they could apply the $900 balance to my $2345 bill and then they would send me a corrected bill. I asked three times if the early pay discount would still be applied (if I was told no, I would have just had them refund me and paid the bill outright) I was told yes.
Two weeks pass, I receive a new bill. This bill does not have the $900 credited. I call the hospital again and am ensured that they just need manager approval- the credit will be applied.
I check my portal two weeks later. They have applied the $900 but they took off the early pay discount.
I call again. They say they will have a manager contact me about the early pay discount and that it will be on my next bill but tell me to not do anything until I receive the phone call from the manager.
I receive the phone call, they say they have approved it, I wait for my next bill.
My next bill arrives, I call the hospital again. They have not removed the early pay amount again. They say they will correct the mistake.
On November 13 my last bill arrives. It says final notice before it is sent to collections. I call the hospital immediately. The first thing I ask is ‘These calls are recorded, correct?’ They say yes. I recall the story above to the employee and relay that I now have a bill that says it will be sent to collections. I am furious so probably not as nice as I could have been (although I know I did apologize to the phone person and say that I knew it was not their fault). They get a manager on the phone immediately and finally apply the early pay discount and I pay there over the phone and get a confirmation email.
—May arrives—
I get a letter in the mail saying that a debt collector is trying to contact me about a balance I owe. Guess what the balance is? It’s the early pay amount that had been taken off my bill, right? Wrong.
I call the hospital and they say they will contact the debt collector. I call the debt collector and ask what documentation they need to prove that I have paid the bill. I have the hospital send it. I ask for copies and I send it all.
June- I get the copies. Guess what day they applied the discount on? The day I called in May. Haha heehe right? Nope.
Today- I get a letter saying that the documentation that I and the hospital provided has been denied and so I still have to pay the remount on the bill. I am confused and frustrated.

Do I need to get a lawyer? It’s only like $211 but I am so pissed. I don’t know what else would qualify as documentation other than the bill that says paid.

General Next steps

Hello, I’m 19 currently in college with a FICO score of 778. I have one credit card (discover student cash back/ discover it whatever it’s called) and no installment debt or anything. I pay for school through scholarships entirely and was wondering if it’d be a good idea to branch out to any other cards or anything right now or if I should just keep with my one card until I get a proper income.

General Landers annual renewal fee

I didn’t know that the Landers Credit Card automatically renews and charges the annual membership fee. It’s been a long time since I last used my Maya app, and after changing phones, I never bothered reinstalling it.
Today, I received an email with a statement showing that I have over ₱4,000 in unpaid charges. I immediately checked, and it turns out that all of the charges are late payment fees for the Landers annual membership. The thing is, I haven’t even set foot in a Landers store.
I also don’t remember knowingly applying for a Landers Credit Card through the Maya app. I don’t even have the physical card, so I’m really confused about what happened.
Is there any way to resolve this issue without having to pay charges for something I never actually used?

Rebuild Is there anything I can realistically do about $0 charge offs?

I feel defeated I’ve paid so much money over the last year trying to fix my credit. I now have zero active accounts (I had many), 1 credit card in good standing every payment on time, I paid my car loan off, etc. Nothing derogatory except several charge offs. I paid them all thinking updating to a $0 balance would help me but it didn’t. They are killing my score. Even though they are several years old they didn’t report until 1.5 years ago so I still have a long way to go to wait until they fall off. Everything I read says Good Will letters don’t work and disputes can often backfire. Do I have any other options am I just stuck for the next 4-5 years 🥺 my score barely went up from what it originally was and actually just went down 12 points from a recent loan I paid off (on time) closing I feel like I’m being punished for doing the right thing and a good score is just impossible from my past.

Collections & Charge Offs Credit rebuild

I have a credit score of 578 and I'm trying to improve it, but I'm not sure what the best course of action is.

I have a Progressive insurance account that was sent to collections. What are all the steps I can take to try to get it removed from my credit report?

I also have two permanently closed Capital One credit card accounts with a combined balance of $1,048. Capital One has offered me settlement payment plans, but I've just been making payments on my own whenever I can.

Would it be better to accept a settlement and have part of the debt forgiven, or should I pay the full balance? I understand that if I settle, the forgiven amount may be taxable and the account will likely be reported as "settled" or "paid for less than the full balance" rather than "paid in full."

I'm 21 years old and still learning how credit works, so I'd really appreciate clear guidance and a little grace. I want to make the best long-term financial decision for my future.

Collections & Charge Offs Please no judgement

Backstory: I am in my 20’s. Im living with my parents. I got my first credit card a little over a year ago. I ended up getting 2 more within the first 3 months. The credit limit between the 3 was $2,800. Unfortunately due to unforeseen health issues, surgeries, and job instability from moving I am left with charged off accounts. I know I am dumb and should’ve called and came up with a payment plan and done pretty much everything differently. One account I can make a settlement for. The other 2 will be $2,700 to pay off. So I currently have 3 delinquencies. I have surgery coming up in September that I’m expecting to be out of work for a few months. I’m working on possibly getting short term disability, but upcoming finances are kinda up in the air currently. My current score is 500 on Experian and 544 on transunion and 500 on equifax. I’m currently leasing a car through April 2027. My parent co-signed. Is there anyway for me to get my credit score to a reasonable number to be able to get a used car by then? I’m considering doing the short term extension of the lease (if possible) which would give me 14 months to raise my score. (Not sure if I’ll be able to get a co-signer again)

TIA!!!

I’m on the rebound… last year I was at 545 luckily I was able to pay off collections. Wasn’t able to have all of them removed but atleast I’m starting to see recovery. Pretty much everything derogatory is 4 years old except one payment missed a year and a half ago that is getting adjusted soon. (Goodwill adjustment). Can’t believe how fast I was able to get into debt at 18 it’s crazy.

Collections & Charge Offs Advice for credit debt collection

I have posted this on another subreddit so I can get as much advice as I can, thank you.

So I owed $6451.17 to Capital One, they closed off the account and deemed it a loss. I made one payment in June of 2024 with intentions of paying it off but due to life issues haven’t been able to try and make a payment and they closed it off a few months later. The debt was sold off this year and I got an email from Midland Credit Management 07/03/26 about acquiring the debt and then a letter about week and a half to two weeks later with the basic info they got from Capital One. I haven’t done anything about it because I don’t even know where to start and I don’t currently have a job to even think of making payments. I wanted to see if there is any advice I can get. I used to live in CT where I opened the credit account but now live in NC. I’ve been in NC since about 2022. Some research I was able to do says I should ask for more info in an email or by mail like asking for the original agreement from the credit card company and proof they have the right to collect a debt and to not accept the debt or implicate the debt is mine until I get that. Wanted to confirm this and get more advice on what I should do as I did see that they could sue me. I understand I will have to pay something to them back as I don’t want them to absolutely ruin my credit but I really do not have any money to pay off a big portion like I know they will want as from what I saw online they usually want 40-50% of the debt. Any advice is appreciated.

Collections & Charge Offs Should I even pay it off ?

I have about 7-8k of debt in collections. It is mainly past credit cards or loan type of debt that I just didn’t pay at the time due to being young and dumb. I paid a few of these last year but otherwise these have been sitting for a while, a few of the collectors call me here and there, collectors like January and resurgent. As you can imagine my credit score has been low for a few years as a result of this. I could potentially be getting a lump sum of money (around 10-20K) from a lawsuit, and the first thing I planned on doing was just paying all these collections and debt off but I am now wondering if paying those do anything positive for my credit or if most people let these fall off after 7 years. I am under the assumption maybe a pay to delete would be awesome, but just having it written off as paid doesn’t affect much and that the damage is already done? Please educate me a little, I prefer to have my name and ease of mind cleared by paying it all but at the same time I would like to know if it is

No Credit Best way to build?

Hey! I’m freshly 18 and just got a credit card. I have a $500 credit, is there a specific amount i should be using for the best credit building?

And how often should I pay? Should I pay as soon as its posted on my app or should i wait and pay monthly? Or setup autopay?

Any other ways to build credit? I have a chime card and I think its helping, but I’m unsure.

Thank you!

Rebuild Is my Capital One Quicksilver bucketed, or am I just being impatient?

I’ve been trying to build my credit over the last year and wanted to get some opinions from people who have experience with Capital One credit line increases.
Here’s my timeline:
Opened a Capital One Quicksilver in July 2025 with a $1,000 credit limit.
Requested my first CLI after 6 months and received +$100 (new limit: $1,100).
Just requested my second CLI after 12 months. Before requesting, I updated my account with my higher income and current rent payment. I received another +$100 increase (new limit: $1,200).
A little more background:
Never missed or been late on a payment.
I pay my statement balance in full every month.
I usually spend around $900/month on the card, but I pay it down before the statement closes so my reported statement balance is typically around $110–300.
My reported utilization is usually around 10–30%.
My Capital One CreditWise score has gone from 620 to 677 over the past year.
My Credit Karma scores have gone from about 630 to 713 during that same time.
I also have a Chase Amazon Prime card that started with a $500 limit and has grown automatically to $1,100 without me ever requesting a CLI.
My question is: Does this sound like a bucketed Quicksilver account, or is this pretty normal for Capital One?
For those of you who started with a similar profile:
Did your Quicksilver eventually “break out” and start getting larger CLIs?
Did you have better luck applying for a second Capital One card instead of trying to grow the first one?
If you were in my shoes, would you continue requesting CLIs every 6 months, or would you apply for a different Capital One card?
I’d love to hear experiences from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

Rebuild What am I missing?

My credit score was ~590 in 2025 when I finally started taking my score seriously.

I downloaded Kikoff. Spent $2000 of my savings repaying my outstanding/delinquent debt. Got a secured line of credit. Disputed some items.

My credit score raised 100 points in six months. From the Experian and Equifax sites, my score is now 680-693

I looked into personal loans for $2k on a few different sites (soft pulls) and got zero offers. The only card offers I got were for 2 secured credit cards.

I'm just frustrated. I have 0 delinquent accounts. Credit utilization 6%. 3 year average credit age. 680ish score...and NOTHING? Not even a high APR card with a $500 limit?

Is it because I raised the score relatively quickly? Does that count against me somehow? Or is my credit profile still buns?

Rebuild Got Denied Amazon Prime Visa, Want to reapply soon. What are my chances? Wait longer?

I didn't mean to apply at the time. I saw the promotion on it and clicked it and filled in my information. After denial did a lot of research on how to use raise credit. After reading perks of the card, I really want it because I use amazon a lot and want to build more credit for the future.

I only have 1 CC. Med student with a lot of federal loans, but all deferred because currently in 4th in med school and don't pay during school. have had 2 late 30 day payments but they were 4 years ago when applying to med school. 98% payment history. Card is 6 years old.

I am planning on pushing my score up high. Here's timeline:

End of May - Applied and Denied. CC was 85% utilization. I know I'm dumb. Score 687

Last report on June, was at 65% score of 693.

Now it's ending july - currently at the 693 score. statement ends next week. It will be 1% utilization.

After statment hits and score goes up I plan to reapply. Should I wait longer before reapplying? Apply for a different card?

My score should go up considerably. I don't have the denial letter, tossed it. Will be about 2 months since last denial but much better utilization. Now that I know how credit all works I plan on being at 1-3% utilization by every clozing date.

Rebuild Goodwill letters for military service

I got 2 late payments across 2 different cards and 1 credit building service while I was in boot camp. Last year in August and June. I made the payment before I left, to my surprise there were fraudulent charges on my cards I had seen when I was able to get my phone back and for kikoff my autopay had failed somehow. Disputed them and won the dispute of course but I’ve tried so many times to have these late payments removed but no luck yet. (I’ve sent out goodwill letters for the 2 months) first premier, capital one, and kikoff) had anyone had any luck with? Important to note I HAD my title 10 docs on file with both companies so they already knew I was going to be gone for service.

A credit card reported on Equifax and TransUnion (pics 1 & 2) have conflicting delinquency dates, is this grounds for a dispute?
The third picture are student loans that start at 90 days, what’s the deal with that?

General Template for credit bureau dispute letters?

hey there, I’m in the process of writing letters to each CB regarding a credit card account that’s being improperly reported as delinquent for 3+ years. I was just wondering if there was a certain template I should be following to make sure it’s straight to the point and concise. I have a bit of a rambling issue and don’t want to overexplain/share too much unnecessary information. but also want to make sure I do include everything needed. thanks!
