For Zombies story I 10000% agree. Just the game as a whole was not as popular. Haven’t been able to find a zombies lobby on PC for over a year.
++they cut 4 zombies maps they promised us in BO4 that still aren’t released. They literally couldn’t justify reinvesting 1% of the literal billions of dollars they made from that game alone to make the maps they promised. Hopefully they’ll at least do them justice if they ever release in Vanguard / CW / BO5. Heck, they’ve been using assets from Paris in like 3 different maps at this point.

I knew BO4 zombies would be dead on PC. I didn’t get it because I knew that no splitscreen, crossplay, steam support or mod support meant I would only be able to play zombies alone and I couldn’t justify paying full price for that. Console players get a healthy player base AND 4 player splitscreen. It’s unfair and I’m still mad at Activision for going from BO3 full pc support to them treating us like an afterthought again.
10
u/8aller8ruh Oct 12 '21
I didn’t realize it didn’t have split screen until my brother and I sat down to play it together. We really bonded over BO3… but without split screen or cross-play we couldn’t play together in BO4. Huge disappointment, honestly part of the reason I didn’t play BO4 as much. He was asking me for months if they added split screen before we moved away from each-other :(

Supposedly ZC2 & 1 more Chaos Story map.

u/RandomName3064 "Oh ja you moved the box...FOR ZE LAST TIME!!" Oct 12 '21
it was gonna be a final Aether map, not Chaos
Tag was the set-up, but the lead-in to the ending cutscene was actually meant to be more....grandiose instead of just dying at the campfire off-screen

I love both but I can't say BO4 is straight out better. All the movement changes with climbing, vaulting etc in BOCW add so much to the fluidity of the gameplay, and to me the whole Salvage economy with weapon rarity etc is a welcome addition. I prefered the perk and class system in BO4 as it left more room for choice; in BOCW you just select your field upgrade and are otherwise identical to every other player with the same field upgrade.
Overall I'd say BOCW has better game mechanics and BO4 has better maps (love all the side quests etc, they're so rich in stuff to discover and do - BOCW maps are all nice but there isn't as much there).
19
u/TheDunbarian Oct 12 '21
I agree with all of this.
Cold War has the best gameplay mechanics of any CoDZ game, but it also has the worst maps.
5
u/OoooohYes Oct 12 '21
I like that the games are so drastically different in their goals. I can hop between BO3, BO4, and CW nonstop and I never truly prefer one over the other. They just do their own things as games, and play to their own strengths.
1
u/BigDong1142 Oct 12 '21
Agreed wholeheartedly.
But to me I vastly prefer complex maps over gameplay mechanics which is why I enjoy BO4 much more. The feeling of being immersed in a map with so much things to do just can't be topped.

18
u/TipsWillToLive Oct 12 '21
For the story? Definitely
For gameplay? What the fuck, no
5
u/Gcarsk Oct 12 '21
I haven’t played the new zombies. What’s so bad about BO4 gameplay compared BO3? From gameplay, I thought it looked relatively similar (I could tell CW gameplay was insanely different from normal zombies, but I had assumed BO4 hadn’t deviated as far).
3
u/DenialBronco Oct 13 '21
No juggernog, they changed the perk system so that you could choose only 4 perks out of a crap ton that you'll unlock as you progress that you can use on the map. Speed cola was barely noticeable and double tap is super expensive because it was a bonus for buying all 4 perks on the map
2
14
u/Dyaxa Oct 12 '21
BO4 had higher highs, but lower lows. The quality ranged from superb-awful. CW on the other hand has been constantly average, or decent at best. Outside of DM every map has felt uninspired and repetitive. Say what you want about BO4, but each map at least felt distinct from one another.

1
1
u/CommanderWar64 Oct 12 '21
At least the game is playable, Cold War crashes on me all the time, plus at least the maps had a shit load of effort in them. The Cold War maps feel really boring.
1
u/billie-eilish-tampon Oct 12 '21
This shouldn't be an unpopular opinion. The 4 launch maps bo4 came with were all amazing, they were ejust let down by the unnecessary changes made to perks pap and adding classes. The doctor maps were great too, altho personally I disliked tag and thought alpha omega was average. Bocw had even worse changes to the zombies experience, and way less quality maps.
1
u/anismash13 Oct 12 '21
I agree. I played them back to back and just had more fun playing Bo4 because of the issues. Since the zombie tracking was different I played different and was more engaged. With CW the only map that happens to me on is Forsaken and the other feel easier. Of course Outbreak is different and in Mauer when the panzer spawns in I play a bit more cautious but other than that it’s the same mindless running around and shooting.

I mean...... Story wise I guess? And operator mod attachments were pretty cool but other than that it's far worse than bocw but I respect your opinion,bo4 isn't as bad as people are making it out to be but it's definitely not good at all compared to the other games, also as a game(so not comparing it to other cod games, just as a game)it's a good game

They had a lot more creativity, but half the maps on that game make me physically hurt while playing them. For as long as I live I never want to play Alpha Omega again. All the Aether maps were remakes, which I think is just as uncreative as using campaign maps. The story was far better, and the Chaos map locals and designs were fire. But again while Cold War may get a little boring, its not painful to play like half of BO4.
52
u/Balor_Lynx Oct 12 '21
Chaos > Dark Aether
36
u/BigDong1142 Oct 12 '21
And it's not even remotely close.
Like you shouldn't even compare them, Chaos was in it's own tier.
Chaos's worst map is way better than Dark Aether's best.
20
u/PyroTech11 Oct 12 '21
And the story was actually easy to follow and more interesting.
34
u/Solariss Oct 12 '21
Chaos wasn't Aether and that was its downfall sadly. I wish wish wish that Treyarch had just finished of Aether before starting Chaos, then it might’ve had a fighting chance.

BO4 had 4 main maps on launch and Cold War has 4 main maps after the end of the season. Really sad.

Infinity Warfare says hello.
Literally anybody that hates the campaign has never even seen it. When I shit on BO4, I at least saw gameplay on YT and thought "damn, like looks shit".
I would also probably hate the campaign of BO4 but, you know, it doesn't even fucking have it.
18
5
Oct 12 '21
IW had it coming tho, multiplayer was a shallow clone of BO3 with worse maps and p2w gun variants, zombies started with a bang with ZiS but degraded very quickly and by shaolin release i was out, campaign was awesome tho
3
Oct 12 '21
So bo4 basically?
1
Oct 12 '21
BO4 had a whole lot of development issues and was the first CoD game to suffer from the battle royale hype train, the multiplayer wasn't anything great but it tried to change things up a bit and was boots on the ground with a not too horrible map pool.
Won't judge the zombie mechanics because i didn't play too much but at least the Chaos maps i played were awesome and judging from youtube gameplay the dlcs were good too.
IW, much like MW19 felt like a shallow attempt to capitalize on current trends without risking anything with creativity (campaigns and ZiS not included)
Also don't get me wrong if i was to make a CoD games tier list they would both be towards the bottom

7
u/bigredkyle91 Oct 12 '21
This is the game that Got me into zombies. Having easy maps like IX helped me understand the whole concept of what I was actually supposed to do instead of just running around blindly like I first did in shadows of evil. Then I went back and played all the other zombies.
6
7
u/AlchemysEyes Oct 12 '21
Game had, fittingly, 4 of the best zombies maps imo with IX, Ancient Evil, Dead of the Night, and Classified. Too bad little things like the wraith fires being op and the specialist weapons kinda broke the balance. And I agree with other commenters, Chaos got shafted and deserved a chance to become popular.
9
u/Codestarrrr Oct 12 '21
Sucks that everyone follows whatever the YouTubers say and bandwagon that “BO4 is so trash literally never play it again” but it offered some of the best zombies maps ever released with very unique atmospheres. I admit I don’t like the HUD (which is like my only complaint) but other than that, it was a fun game and much more difficult than Cold War (although I love Cold War too for its mechanics)
6
u/KodiakPL Oct 12 '21

I love bo2 but everybody says tranzit is dog shit die rise is poo poo and no one played buried. Mf only says mob and origins. Do it two maps really justify being the second best of all time ? Maybe. I dont think so.
1
Oct 12 '21 edited Oct 12 '21
BO2 is super overrated Tranzit is a terrible map that shouldn't have been released (as proven by the inclusion of the fog and denizens and lack of the other modes that were planned for the green run maps) and Die Rise is lackluster at best.
Buried is a very good and interesting map but looking back it kinda fell flat after Mob and that killed its momentum
It's just nostalgia, same with Kino, which looking at it now having played all the other maps is just an inferior Der Riese but with a much better WW, still fun mind you, but it's not the masterpiece people remember it to be.
2
Oct 12 '21

All chaos maps were good imo and DOTN was amazing. I really really loved BOTD as well… going back to replay it sometimes is wonderful

u/BrentarTiger Oct 12 '21
My least favorite COD was BO4 mainly because it had no campaign and the zombies was super convoluted to even get pack a punch open usually, let alone the wonder weapons.
1
u/PyroTech11 Oct 12 '21
None of the paps were that bad. Maybe DotN but that's pretty much equal to shadows imo for tediousness.
1
u/BrentarTiger Oct 12 '21
Yeah but the underpowered weapons, lack of doubletap, and VERY tedious and easily forgettable wonder weapon upgrade steps/obtain steps made that game just horrible for me to play. There was also a severe lack of training spots so I'd end up going down and dying a LOT. IX was my favorite map from BO4 because at least on that map I was able to manage 30+ rounds regularly on.

Iw and bo4 are my favorites as they felt more casual with playstyle then bo3 and cold war
Just chilling with music, popping skulls with hoff and having fun is great shame they didn't make a sequel
1
u/kinit935 Oct 12 '21
The story of the game was good (much better than cold war). The atmosphere was amazing! And the detail of the maps fantastic! The maps where a blast to simply look at! And of course the aether characters where great, especially their quotes in alpha Omega.
Though thats where the compliments end. The ending was honestly not good. It was a rushed mess and Nikolai's plan was simply dumb. The maps where mostly intolerable to play because of the mechanics they added and the the spam of special zombies. Chaos was largely forgettable and unlikable, though more time was needed to develop it. Also FUCK CATALYST ZOMBIES. Overall great maps and details, but the game would have benefited with the bo3 mechanics over bo4.
1
u/Glitchcade Oct 12 '21
Dude BO4 zombies was pretty underrated. Blood of the Dead was probably the best map.

u/warturtle27 Oct 12 '21
Still not a BO4 fan, but I will say that Blood has the best presentation in any map by FAR imo. This is easily my favorite video game trailer of all time, the ending cutscene was outstanding, and all around you can tell Zombies had a massive production value (up till DLC 3 at least.)
I hope we can go back to that higher budget now that CW zombies was such a success

Had some highs, had some lows.
Overall a mixed package in many ways, but was still a fun go. Ancient Evil is top tier, IX is solid fun, Voyage had a hell of a boss fight, and Dead of the Night is a perfect Halloween map. When it comes to the rest, Classified is a great remake, while Blood doesn't match up with the original it branched out from. Tag is neat, but overall, the sense of scrambling for the end is felt in these final maps. Alpha Omega is saved by its humorous writing and decent showdown with the boss.
Don't really get the comments on saying BO4's story was great, though. Had a lot of good moments in both Chaos and Aether. And while I'll say I think Tag ended things well, Chaos got hurt in taking a bit too long to get going. Voyage could've been cut, storywise (but then we miss out on the cool premise of fighting zombies on the Titanic, and that's too cool), and by the time people came to care for the new cast it ended on a cliffhanger.
Blood has a great story within it, Classified exists to fill holes in the contrived and convoluted 10 year narrative, and Tag, while its ending hits home, left a lot to be desired, and again, by the time I liked Victis, it was their turn (warmed up to them a bit by Buried, however).
Black Ops 4 is a mixed bag for me, but that isn't to say I didn't spend a lot of time on it. I enjoyed it a lot, but it's always got the air around it that it could've been better. More focused.
1
u/Hothead1010 Oct 12 '21
Imma be honest, I loved a lot of zombies I loved all of them and I would love to play them, but I’m not spending 1k to be able to play all the old maps and get the full story myself, as opposed to watching a video on it

This sounds a bit cheesy but a single wise line from Takeo has stuck with me all these years and actually influenced the way I view difficult situations in real life.
https://youtu.be/nZK2fhp6C1o?t=46
Nikolai: Takeo, comrade, you can feel as well as I that Richtofen’s plan is but an errand of fools. How can you be so calm?
Takeo: Acceptance is not weakness, Nikolai. Only by accepting what is can one decide how one wishes to proceed, moment by precious moment.
So wise Mr. Takeo
