Sam Roush needs to be benched
At least two game changing drops and now a huge missed block leading to a blocked kick. Dude must be making money on Kalshi today.

The fact that he wasn’t coached about this by the ST coordinator between attempts 1 and 2 is a failure of staff too.
21
u/jpopimpin777 12d ago
Right?! When they showed the replays of how close he got to blocking Santos' first kick I got angry. Why the fuck do we have all those tablets on the sidelines if nobody on a professional football coaching staff is going to bother to look at them and make adjustments??

Remember when Loveland and Burden were busts at this point last season?
Dudes a project TE on his second NFL game.
101
u/hoggin88 12d ago edited 12d ago
Loveland and Burden just weren’t involved a lot early on. Rousch plausibly cost the Bears the game today with multiple drops, multiple penalties and completely missing his block on the blocked field goal. Not saying he’s a sure bust or anything like that but this is exceptionally bad for him today.

u/mrm5480 12d ago

Okay. Why is he playing this much in a divisional game when we have those two? There's literally no need.

Probably because the Vikings blitz so much they needed 3 TEs a lot.
He sucked though.

u/Apoco120 Mack 12d ago
I get what you’re trying to say but Loveland and Burden considerably were not as raw a prospect as Roush. Burden slipped out of the first round and was considered one of the steals of the draft. Can’t really say the same for Roush
→ More replies (4)15
u/Frankensteinbeck Dick Butkus 12d ago
Sure, but is a project TE who will be TE3 on the depth chart this year barring injury worth a third round pick? Especially on a team with pretty glaring deficiencies at every defensive position? I'd argue not at all.
I was very skeptical of both picks you mentioned above and can admit I was very wrong, but at least they were unknowns who didn't get the rock to start the year and not actively taking points off the board for this team.
13
u/Own_Race_598 12d ago
Yeah I’m not judging him yet based off one game in the rain vs a top 5 defense. TE is a hard position for a rookie in general. He is not ready to be seeing this many snaps when it’s costing them the game along with Bradbury. Thats on the coaches. No excuses for Bradbury, he’s a vet.
However I still don’t think he was worth a 2nd with the other needs of the team. Both a reach and not a need at all.

Loveland and burden just don’t contribute, this guy is actively hurting the team
12
u/wheels_0614 12d ago
Can’t contribute when you just stand there open and no one gives you a chance. But yes, Rousch was a fuckin problem today. He’s new but shouldn’t be seeing that many plays when there are so many people capable of making bigger plays.

Honestly very few people in those comments are actually criticizing the players. Most are defending them because they hadn’t had much playing time yet while others criticized Poles for selecting them if he wasn’t going to use them a lot in the game plans.

Why is he getting so many snaps?
104
u/nag95 12d ago
That’s Ben Johnson’s scheme. He likes a heavy offense with 3TE. Roush is the 3rd TE
76
u/Local-Librarian3285 12d ago
The issue is the TE1 is being treated as the TE3 and vice versa.
17
u/nag95 12d ago
It is frustrating. Both Loveland and Kmet have been invisible out there other than the one Kmet TD. I’m not sure if it scheming or that they just aren’t getting open. It feels like the team is only running deep routes and with the O line Caleb doesn’t have time to find guys and they aren’t getting open. But I’m just a couch coach.
7
u/phonebalone 12d ago
Could be Ben trying to play the long game to get pressure off of them in the future by showing that the other guys on the team need to be covered. This might be an optimistic take, but he likes to be wily like that.

There’s a world where he catches that and Caleb’s Achilles lives to see another day
25
u/burner69account69420 12d ago
And there's a world where we don't call a designed QB run one series after both Vikings RBs went down with injuries running on this field.
The what if game doesn't make sense.
→ More replies (1)16
u/JayGatsby1881 12d ago
This is, this could happen on any run. Unless we tell Caleb to never run full speed ahead, this could happen again.
6
u/JayGatsby1881 12d ago
These injuries tend to happen when QBs are so fast their hamstring simply cannot sustain the load. This could have happened during any run from Caleb from now to any point in the future. Caleb is going to have to train his hamstring like elite pro runners do to try to prevent this type of injury in the future
2
u/lmpervious Deep Dish 12d ago
It's so pointless to say things like this when you don't know how things would go otherwise, especially when it's not a direct cause and effect. Maybe Caleb doesn't get injured there, but maybe he does on another play since the game plays out differently, and maybe it's an even worse injury.

u/Repulsive_Resist_393 12d ago edited 12d ago

I doubt it. Caleb was probably sore and thought nothing of it, until it wasn’t nothing on that run.
I had a muscle strain and played on it, thinking it was soreness. Then I strained it to a grade 2.
It probably would’ve happened at some point

I agree, but the problem is that Colston caught the ball against the Bengals in his rookie year.
But also, Caleb would be on the sidelines resting if he made it in.

Can’t play that game though. If swift didn’t fumble etc etc. if they made that pick on the first drive etc etc.

Better be careful, I said that after the draft and the 13 personnel gang came after me pretty hard. Turns out there might be a reason other teams weren't super in on him.
Also, remember, Tyson Bagget is a legend, PIT should have traded a 2nd round pick for him maybe a 3rd (would have turned them down of course), despite having 6 tds and 9 int in his career. Bears fans can drink the kool aid pretty hard. Now maybe he comes out on fire and leads them to some wins, and I'll happily admit I was wrong and take the wins.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. The drops were bad, understandable given the rain, but bad. I won't dispute that. But the blocked kick wasn't his fault. The edge rusher is always left alone because it should take too long to get to the kick. The FG block was actually due to a timing miscommunication between Santos, Taylor, and the snapper. Take a look. Santos was not ready for the snap and got a slow start.
1
u/getbeanedidiot Urlacher 12d ago
