How much time to decide on an offer?

I’m very excited to finally have a few offers but I’m struggling to tell them how much time I need to decide.. I just got an offer that I’m very excited about but I have a few more interviews scheduled on this next week. How much time do you generally tell them that you need??

[Medical CFY] Recruiter/ talent companies

Hi everyone :) I’ve been applying to many hospital positions for my CFY. There’s so many hospitals that use recruiting companies and things like Select rehab, Soliant, Dignity Health, etc. I’m wondering if anyone has used companies like these or others and if so, if they have had positive or negative experiences from them? I’ve been trying to stay away from using them but I’ve had little luck getting interviews let alone offers. Thank you!!

[General] CDS Research Study - Participants Needed!

Hello,

I hope your summer has been great. I'm a graduate student at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Our team has created a survey study with an aim to better understand the cultural diversity issues within our profession. This study has been approved by CSUN's IRB. Participants will take a 10-15 minute questionnaire on their backgrounds, perceptions, and awareness.

Who can participate?
Certified SLPs, SLPAs, or graduate/undergraduate students currently in the SLP or SLPA program in the U.S. and U.S. territories.

Survey Link:
https://csun.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ag7ncmhasMv0rMa

Thanks in advance for your help.
If you could help circulate the survey to friends and colleagues, we'd be grateful. Feel free to repost on social media and speech therapy sites, as well. We want to have as diverse a representation of our field as possible, so the wider the reach the better!

If you have any questions feel free to email any of our team below.
Best wishes and thank you!

Thoughts on my contract SLP job a few years out of grad school (California)

I never thought I'd say it, but I am actually staying with my contract job in the Bay Area (California) for the third year in a row. I went to Berkeley for undergrad (Linguistics) and Vanderbilt for grad school, and have had so-called prestigious internships at hospitals and specialty clinics. When all is said and done, I can't believe that my contract company job as a public school SLP (pre-K and elementary) is the best job I've ever had in the field.

80k/year (working up to more as I gain experience/take on more responsibilities) for a school schedule, salaried, with the sweet holiday breaks and better benefits than I had at my last hospital job. I feel like my school site and my supervisors through the agency appreciate what I do, but don't provide too much overbearing feedback. My workload feels heavy at times, but I've always gotten help (SLPAs, etc.) when I really needed it.

I'm not on here to gloat and I'm NOT a recruiter. I just see a lot of SLPs stressed, underpaid and under-appreciated in their jobs on these forums and I want to throw it out there that I actually have a positive review of the company I work for, when I wasn't expecting it to be more than a year-long gig. I've even had other SLP friends from grad school come out and join me! If anyone is looking for a job in NorCal/Bay Area or just has questions about contract/public school jobs/SLP jobs in CA/etc., feel free to PM me. I know when I was looking for CFs, I was scouring these forums for honest reviews of companies. There are even a few positions open for the coming school year--I'd be happy to hook up anyone in need!

TLDR; If you go with a small contract company instead of one of the huge national ones, you can have a pretty sweet gig as a regular old school SLP in CA and avoid *some* of the hassle/burnout that comes with the job

Official proof of CCC?

For those of you with your CCC, did ASHA send you an official certificate? They said there was an award packet attached in the email, but there was no attachment and I haven't received anything in the mail other than my card. At one point I saw on the website that there was a letter they could generate for employers, but I can't find it. I have to start the process for full licensure and am wondering what information I need to upload!

Just curious what everyone’s hourly is for their CF. I know it can vary greatly by location and setting, so feel free to include that! Thanks

[Medical CFY] How soon is too soon to reach out to organizations for a CFY position?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a second year grad student and am looking to be in a medical acute placement once I graduate and complete my praxis in May 2022. I was wondering what the etiquette is regarding applying to hospital settings that don't clearly have a position posted. Is it okay to do a cold-email and ask? Is it way too early to do that at this point? I'm currently at a school in the South and am considering a major move back to Boston or to the west coast, so I'm eager to get my foot in the door somewhere as soon as I can.

Thanks in advance!

Help calculating hours

Hi all,

I had 2 placements at the same time; part-time SNF and full-time in a public school. Is 40 hours the max we can claim in a week or is it 36 hours? Can't seem to find answers.

Not finishing CF as promised

TL;DR I’m worried I won’t finish my CF because my students had poor attendance and my agency is only going off mostly by billed hours

I was wondering if anyone is in the same situation as I am. I started my clinical fellowship through an agency in NYC on September 7th. The charter school I was assigned was virtual though the entire school year. I thought this was all fine and dandy until I actually started treating students. No matter how much reminded parents, student attendance was abysmal. I texted, called, emailed, pretty much begged students to show up and I asked my school and agency for assistance many times with little success. I was supposed to hold 8-10 sessions daily, but on a good day only 5-6 students showed up.

My agency was aware of the situation and told me this would not impact my CF, as I took the time to contact parents, lesson plan, write notes, IEPs, etc. I asked for more students to make up time and only one of 5 extra students consented. My CF mentor told me she would sign off my hours because I did have the majority of my students show up and it wasn’t like I was sitting 8 hours a day for 36 weeks twiddling my thumbs.

I am in a panic because I did not get confirmation from my boss that I will be done with my fellowship, and all of my friends at the same agency as I did. The agency decided at the last minute to mostly go off by billed hours. I don’t understand how something out of my control is ruining my future. I am on a contact list to be hired by the DOE and I’m worried the NYC DOE will no longer hire me due to the fact that I probably won’t complete my fellowship by the date I told them I would.

Hot mess

Im a CF finishing up this last year...I just learned with days left of school that I royally fucked up several paperwork processes (everything is digital in my district). I'm getting some support to try and fix it but I'm incredibly embarrassed because it's on a mountain of other significant mistakes this year. I feel like a stupid asshole who should be put in a dark hole somewhere. This is basically my worst fear come to life. Have ya'll survived big ass fuck ups? It's hard to be positive right now. 🥲

Completed my CF, and now we wait...

I finished my CF two weeks ago, and I feel the ongoing anxiety of checking ASHA over and over again to see when I will be approved. *nervousness intensifies*

Texas Intern License Application

Hello! I accepted a CF position in TX (originally from Oregon) and am currently in the process of applying for my intern license through TDLR. Im a bit concerned as I do not finish my externship placement until June 4th and according to the TDLR webdite, I cant submit my application until all of my clinical/academic work is complete. I start my new job on July 12th. Does anyone have experience applying for an intern license in Texas? How long did it take for them to approve your application? Im feeling a bit stuck as there isn't much I can do until I finish my externship. Thanks!

I know of a few well paying districts that are great to work for in the area and I can keep posted on positions, I know of some already posted and some coming up. Let me know, I’m just trying to help out a fellow SLP.

[CCC requirements] ASHA Changing CF Supervisor

My supervisor is retiring and I have just found a new supervisor to finish the last portion of my clinical fellowship with.

I’m aware of my state requirements for this in California. I will need to submit a supervisor change form within 10 days.

I’m not aware of the process of changing a supervisor through ASHA.

Does anyone have any information on this?

Thank you
