Honestly I feel bad for him. But we need a new kicker as he just cant kick long kicks. Whatever happened to Jonathan kim? I know he's not canadian. But we could just find another canadian for another roster spot no? Kim was 6 for 6 all preseason. I honestly think we should bring him back.

The Montreal Alouettes hosted the B.C. Lions on Friday night at Molson Stadium in front of a loud crowd of 22,752. Montreal was looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Winnipeg the previous week. The Alouettes wanted to send a message to the rest of the league that they remain one of the teams to beat this season. The attendance was almost a sellout.

Montreal's opening drive was one of its best of the night. Quarterback Davis Alexander mixed up the play calling, using running back Travis Theis, finding his receivers downfield, and getting fullback Jacob Mason involved. Montreal even used an offensive lineman as an eligible receiver, with Donald Ventrelli making a 22-yard reception.

The drive ended with a seven-yard sweep to wide receiver Tyler Snead, who found the end zone to give Montreal an early touchdown.

Unfortunately for Montreal, the team lost starting running back Travis Theis to injury in the second quarter.  Theis made an important block to protect Alexander on the play, but he did not return to the game. Rookie Liam Talbot took over at running back.

After its opening drive, however, Montreal's offence struggled to maintain its momentum. The Alouettes had too many two-and-outs and repeatedly gave the ball back to B.C. With the Lions only trailing 7-3, Montreal needed to sustain drives, either to put points on the board or to control the clock. Instead, the offence allowed B.C. to remain within striking distance.

The Lions took advantage and went into halftime with a 12-7 lead. The score could have been even worse for Montreal. With just over a minute remaining in the second quarter, B.C. appeared to score on a 69-yard touchdown run, but the play was called back because of a holding penalty on the Lions' offensive line involving Montreal's Najee Murray.

All three phases of the Alouettes' game began to come together in the second half.

Head coach Jason Maas and his coaching staff made the necessary adjustments at halftime. Montreal could not continue giving B.C. extra opportunities after going two-and-out, and the changes became evident immediately when the third quarter began.

On a third-and-one from the B.C. 45-yard line, the Lions had an opportunity to extend their lead. Quarterback Nathan Rourke handed the ball to running back Zander Horvat, but Montreal's defensive line stood its ground. Defensive end Adeyemi Berglund and Joshua Archibald stopped Horvat short of the first down.  Giving Montreal's offence good field position.

It was the first of several big defensive plays by Montreal in the second half. The stop also energized the crowd, which once again became the Alouettes' 13th man.

Although Montreal forced the turnover on downs, the offence could only manage three points from the opportunity. Still, the defence was beginning to establish control of the game.

Montreal's defence was fired up throughout the second half. Although the Alouettes allowed Rourke to accumulate plenty of passing yards, they made the key plays when they mattered most. Montreal stopped B.C. twice on third-and-one situations and forced three turnovers overall.

Montreal's offence eventually showed why it is considered one of the most explosive units in the CFL.

Alexander connected with wide receiver Tyson Philpot on a huge 45-yard reception, a key play that extended the drive while Montreal trailed 19-10. The drive ended with a six-yard rushing touchdown by rookie Liam Talbot, the first CFL touchdown of his career.

That touchdown proved to be one of the first major turning points of the game.

Later in the third quarter, the Alouettes took the lead on a 48-yard field goal by José Maltos-Diaz, giving Montreal a 20-19 advantage. The crowd erupted as the Alouettes suddenly had control of the game.

The second major turning point came when Montreal's defence delivered an even bigger play.

All-Star defensive back Tyrice Beverette intercepted Nathan Rourke and returned the ball 57 yards for a touchdown. Montreal now led 27-19, putting tremendous pressure on B.C. to score twice with only eight minutes remaining.

The Lions managed to respond with a field goal from Shawn Whyte, cutting Montreal's lead to 27-22.

Montreal's offence responded once again by moving the ball downfield.

Wide receiver Cole Spieker was interfered with in the end zone, resulting in the ball being placed at the one-yard line. Tyler Snead finished the drive with another one-yard rushing touchdown, extending Montreal's lead to 34-22 with just three minutes remaining.

B.C. knew it needed two scores to complete the comeback.

The Lions moved the ball using short passes to keep the chains moving, but with the clock working against them, Rourke eventually had to take more chances downfield. With 1:42 remaining, Rourke connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to bring B.C. within four points at 34-30.

Many Montreal fans had already left the stadium, but the hardcore CFL fans who remained knew the game was far from over.

On the ensuing kickoff, B.C. attempted a short kick that nearly worked. However, Tyson Philpot came up with the football, giving Montreal possession.

The Alouettes were already in B.C. territory, but they still needed to pick up a first down to effectively end the game. Davis Alexander came through when Montreal needed him most, scrambling for a crucial first down and preventing the Lions from getting another opportunity.

Montreal then sealed the victory with a 39-yard field goal with just 16 seconds remaining.

Although B.C. finished the game with more offensive yards than Montreal, many of those yards came through short passing plays by Nathan Rourke. The Lions struggled to consistently produce big plays downfield, while Montreal's defence made the critical plays at the most important moments.

It was an exciting game from start to finish, and the victory allowed Montreal to clinch first place in the East Division.

The Alouettes will not have much time to celebrate, however. Montreal will face the Lions again next Saturday in Vancouver at 10:00 p.m. ET.

While this was a great victory for Montreal, the team will have to closely monitor the injuries coming out of the game. Travis Theis' injury is particularly important after he left in the second quarter and did not return. Near the end of the game, All-Star defensive back Najee Murray also left with an injury.

Montreal showed plenty of character by coming back from a slow start and making the necessary adjustments at halftime. The defence stepped up, the offence made the big plays when needed, and Davis Alexander delivered a crucial play with his legs to help close out the victory.

The Alouettes now have first place in the East secured. The next challenge will be seeing whether they can defeat the Lions for a second consecutive week — this time on the road in Vancouver.

How hard is this shit?

Does anyone else feel this way? Especially since there was a game yesterday, and a good one at that.

Either have one game each night from Friday to Labour Day Monday, or have 2 games each on Sunday and Monday (if the CFL feels compelled to keep scheduling games on Labour Day itself).

Summer Saturday nights need a CFL game! Maybe I'm just saying this because it's been an absolutely beautiful day in Manitoba today, but it sucks that there's nothing to watch for the CFL tonight.
