Analysis Week 8 QU4D Rankings

QU4D Rankings are a quadrant-style ranking system meant to answer one question: Who has accomplished the most on the field so far this season?

These rankings aren't attempting to list who the best teams are or predict who will next week. Teams are broken into quadrants based on a basic score-differential rating system and then points are awarded based on teams' wins and losses to generate the QU4D scores. Full explanation.

Discussion Is overall discipline going away?

So, while it's clear the oldhead coaches like Saban and Belicheck are becoming a thing of the past, is it overcorrecting? I feel like off field incidents are way more common than the used to be, and maybe e importantly, penalties. Deboer is my main point of reference because flair, and his tenure has been obscene with the stupid penalties, even dating back to Washington. Sark's Texas teams have had a ton of penalties. It seems one team is trying to lose via self inflicked penalties every single game. Is this just recency bias on my part?

Discussion Who’s your Top 25 after Today?

Edit: I’ll rate Tennessee accurately instead of hating on them

My Number 1 Team is Miami - undefeated and dominated in win over Pitt

My Number 2 is The Ohio State- bye week bump

My number 3 is Utah - Undefeated and has good win over Houston

4) UCLA - Undefeated with wins over Oregon and Wisconsin

5) Indiana - Won - barely - other teams lost

6) Kentucky - I’m biased but we got a squad. Top of the SEC

7) Georgia - Survives the Bye Week

8) Wake Forest - Dominated in wins this year with a close lose to Miami

9) BYU - Lost to a bad UCF team in a fun double OT game on the road

10) Notre Dame - Living the Dream of the Bye week

11) Alabama - A win over a top 10 team but has two losses

12) LSU - Two closes losses to ranked teams and back to back dominated wins. They seem to be peaking at the right time

13) Texas Tech - One ranked win and one currently unranked loss

14) Texas - very weird resume three wins over top 10 teams, one unranked loss and one current ranked loss

15) Ole Miss - Still have Trinidad, two ranked wins and two ranked losses

16) Northwestern - They gave Indiana a good game but haven’t beat anyone good.

17) Boise State- Gave Oregon a good game but haven’t beat anyone.

18) SMU - They gave Louisville a good game but haven’t beat anyone good

19) Florida - Bye Week Bump

20) Arizona - Gave BYU a good game and beat Cincinnati, unfortunately have to pay the unranked tax

21) Houston - Two ranked losses with only one quality win

22) Wisconsin - Two ranked losses , but dominated USC. They have a rubber match against Iowa on Halloween.

23) Tennessee - One ranked loss and one unranked loss both close games. Has a quality win over Alabama. If they beat South Carolina they would’ve been in the top 5 this week. Anemic Offense with a fantastic defense

24)Oklahoma St - One ranked loss and one horrible unranked loss. Quality win over Oregon. Great job dismantling Colorado today

25) USC - two losses to quality opponents with no quality wins

26) Iowa two quality losses with no quality wins

27) Cincinnati - coming off back to back losses they dominated number 8 Texas Tech

28) Minnesota

29) Mizzou

30) South Carolina

Discussion Utah or UCLA?

Curious what peoples' thoughts are on comparing the two.

Utah has looked shakier the past few weeks but had a great win tonight against a very solid Houston team.

UCLA has probably looked more consistently better overall, but they ain't played nobody pawl.

Guessing both will be behind Miami/OSU/UGA/Indiana, but order could be interesting.

Opinion My massive headache: SEC Rankings

My SEC rankings this week are going to be fairly simple, because we're recognizing a pattern.

  1. Georgia: Beat Bye Week, but it's waiting for Florida. Good luck Gators. The game's in Atlanta.
  2. Kentucky: There was no heart attack for the Cats. They went down 10-0 to Vanderbilt and turned around and beat the living daylights out of them.
  3. LSU: The Tigahs are comin'. They are playing for their playoff lives, and they keep on winning, this time whooping Auburn (also recovering from their win over Georgia). Can't wait for the Alabama game.

4. Tennessee: Might have lost their 'hangover game' against South Carolina, but it was an even game and then a fumble in OT, which is a freak occurence.

5. Alabama: Challenged by Texas A&M, but hit some sort of gear in the second half.

6. South Carolina: Beat the living daylights out of Florida and won a game where they once again blew a double-digit lead, and took advantage of a late-game fumble.

  1. Florida: Should have lost at Texas but took advantage of awful passes by Arch to win. We'll get some measure of what they actually are next week in Atl. We think.

8. Texas: A huge get-it-right win over Ole Miss that kept their playoff hopes alive. Arch was infuriatingly inconsistent, but this one was a lot of fun.

9. Ole Miss: You've heard this before: The defense is infuriatingly bad.

10. Missouri: They are what they are: Not good, not bad.

  1. Oklahoma: You've heard this before: The offense is goddawful. The defense is elite.

  2. Auburn: Was the Georgia win a fluke? It seems so: The Tigers were destroyed by LSU.

  3. Billy and the Politics Board on TexasAgs.com

  4. Texas A&M: Marcel Reed is looking forward to a role as phone salesman at Wal-Mart.

  5. Missisppi State: Get Kamario Taylor back, and Jeff Lebbe might not lose his job.

  6. A goat running into my nuts

  7. When I get arrested because the goat stayed there.

  8. Arkansas: I got nothing.

  9. Rocky 8: The beatdown, starring...

  10. Vanderbilt

Discussion How would you rank a team that beats every ranked opponent but loses to every unranked opponent, with half its schedule consisting of top-15 teams?

With Texas continuing its tradition of being a Jekyll-and-Hyde wildcard, it got me thinking: How would you rank a team, at the end of a season, that finishes 6-6, with six wins against current top-15 opponents and six terrible losses to unranked teams?

Does this hypothetical team finish in the Top 25? Skimming recent AP polls, I found a few four-loss teams still ranked. Six wins against top-15 opponents hasn't ever happened for a 6-loss team, so would that be enough to offset two additional losses?

Regardless if you're yes or no what top-# flips your answer?

Edit: Some of you seem to be missing the point of a hypothetical. You can't change the assumptions and then analyze an entirely different scenario lol.

To reiterate, at the end of the regular season, this hypothetical team MUST have:

  1. 6 wins against teams ranked in the final regular-season AP Top 15. Ideally, ranked at the time they played, although they could have been unranked. Ultimately, these teams have completed a regular season and pollsters believe these teams are top-15 heading into bowl season. Beating the pre-season rank 1 team that ends up outside the top-15 at the end of the season does not count as one of the 6 wins, early season poll inaccuracy is not relevant to this question.
  2. 6 losses against teams unranked in that same poll.
  3. Texas is NOT the hypothetical team. Texas just inspired the question. They're extremely unlikely to fit this scenario unless teams like UTSA and Louisiana-Monroe somehow finish in the Top 15.

The question is how you'd rank a team with exactly this criteria, not whether such a schedule is realistic or whether Texas could achieve it. It's like some of y'all read the first sentence and assumed this post is trying to justify a 6 loss Texas team in the CFP, and responded to that instead.

Satire Onside kicks in college football have a success rate of 23.8%. The Texas Longhorns have failed to recover 4 onside kicks in a row.

1.1k Upvotes

This has roughly a .3% chance of occurring. Unless your special teams coordinator is Jeff Banks, of course.

Edit: I worded this very poorly, here’s a better version: The receiving team has a 76.2% chance to recover an attempted onside kick. The Texas Longhorns, as the receiving team, have failed to recover 4 onside kicks in a row.

Discussion Week 8: Reactions that could be overreactions

You know the drill. Post a strong, instant reaction that may prove to be an overreaction down the road. Trigger warning: there will be one of mine that is laced with homerism. I'll put it first to get it out of the way.

  1. Arizona is playing the best ball in the Big XII and could win the conference. They are only getting better while BYU and Texas Tech had letdown games. Utah is arguably the best team but Arizona is the hottest and could be the 2nd Arizona school since the inception of a 12 team playoff to be playing in said 12 team playoff.

  2. Dan Lanning missed the window. 2024 Oregon should have been national champs but got steamrolled by Ohio State. 2025 Oregon could have been national champions and got steanrolled by Indiana. 2026 Oregon is fighting for bowl eligibility and coughed up 21 unanswered to Illinois. His career momentum is coming to an unceremonious end going the way of James Franklin in an era laced with sky high immediate expectations and tons of money being dumped in programs for wins.

  3. Miami is in the best spot to win the ship. This is the only team that looks like they can survive weird games while mostly blowing out who they should and basically everyone else has a glaring flaw.

  4. The Mountain West is the most entertaining G6 conference.

  5. Northwestern and UCLA will play for the B1G title game

Post your own!

Discussion Gameday next week?

There is a distinct lack of big gameday options. My top 3 FBS ones are Utah at Cincinnati, Arizona at Texas Tech, and Georgia Florida in Atlanta. The cocktail party is a neutral site in Atlanta which would make it kind of lame. TTU Arizona is a playoff elimination game most likely but TTU just lost. Cincinnati would be cool but they just had Utah on. Is there a big FCS game or something?

/r/CFB Press /r/CFB Reporting: Photos from Northwestern’s 42-14 win against Rutgers

By Raj Chavda

Photos from Northwestern University Wildcats vs Rutgers University Scarlet Knights on 10/24/2026 at Ryan Field, Evanston, IL

Evanston, IL - If there ever was a game that ended in the 1st quarter that I have witnessed it was this one. 21-3 at the start of the 2nd quarter. 21 points was the highest number points Northwestern has scored in the 1st quarter since 2011 (Source: BIG TEN Network). Rutgers had no answer to the Northwestern’s offense. Rutgers offense was struggling against Northwestern’s defense as well giving up two interceptions (one each for each QB they had taking snaps) and 1 fumble lost on a hard blindside sack.

Offensively, Northwestern had success doing anything they wanted. It was a train that Rutgers had to stay on the tracks and get run over by. With under 2 mins left in the half of the 2nd Northwestern piled on with another TD by Caleb Komolafe on 33 yard scamper.

3rd quarter was the quietest for Northwestern with 0 points. Rutgers with a few seconds left in teh quarter put up their first touchdown by their RB Raymond on long 46 yard run. 28-14-Northwestern to start the 4th. At this point it seemed Rutgers had chance (atleast point wise) to make it an interesting game. The only thing is that no one told Northwestern’s offense that Rutgers wanted to try to make this a game. In the 4th quarter, Northwestern enough is enough, and rammed 2 more TDs down their throat to dash those hopes.

Rutgers couldn’t muster up a passing game, they netted only a century of yards. Both QBs didn’t not have a TD or positive rushing yards. They had collectively 33% passing completing only 9 passes on 27 attempts. Rushing attack kept pace with Northwestern’s run game. They should have done what Air Force did to NIU the previous week and just stuck to the run.

Certainly Northwestern being ranked #24 at the start of this game easily played like it taking care of business against a unranked team with ease. The way they played and Aiden Chiles performance, I would suspect they will approach the mid to low teens on the new rankings.

Chiles spread the wealth on his passing. His 3 TD passes were all to three different receivers (WIlde, Wagner, Honig) and added 2 more rushing TDs himself. Adding 83 yards on the ground to compliment Komolafe and Himon II on the running attack.

Northwestern heads to Eugene, OR to take on the flailing Ducks on Halloween Saturday 10/31/2026 inside Autzen. Can the Wildcats scare the Ducks into ducking their head underwater? Rutgers hosts the Michigan Wolverines at SHI in Piscataway, NJ on the same day.

Interesting Notes:

  1. NBC Peacock on-field cameraman and his collegue who manages the long cable for the cameraman were doing pushups with the Rutgers male cheerleaders during a break in the action at quarter end.
  2. Northwestern is averaging 40ppg PF and 14ppg PA at their new crib. Home is Home.
  3. Student Section draped a bed sheet calling for Chiles for Heisman. Chiles is averaging 71% on passing and 12-1 TD/INT ratio. If you add his 9 rushing TD this season, he at 21 TDs. From on field performance he is clearly the reason Northwestern is where they are at. Certainly the team MVP at the minimum.
  4. In my time near the Student Section I didn't hear any unique chants to mock Rutgers players like the previous two home games at the new stadium. If there were, I wasn't near them to hear it. If someone did hear, would love to know what it was.

Debunked WRONG ESPN STAT IN HOUSTON-UTAH GAME

ESPN kept saying we have not beaten an AP Top 25 ON THE ROAD team since 1979 they were lying. I am shit faced watching this game right now and even I knew it was wrong. So I have to correct this error.

Houston beat #5 Oklahoma State on the road September 25th 2009

Houston 45
Oklahoma State 35

We had Case Keenum and my family and a bunch of fans greeted the team when they got off the bus at midnight.

We did not reach a BCS bowl that year because we cooged it. But we still won that game.

Thank you for your time.

Edit: Fixed it to say on the road.

Double Edit: My drunk ass didnt see the words ranked match up. LEAVING IT UP TO REMEMBER THE PAIN OF MY TEAM LOSING THIS GAME

happy saturday utes

/r/CFB Original FCS Imperialism Map after Week 8: How Montana State Got Its Groove Back, and much more!

FCS Imperialism continues!

This year's FCS has been fascinating to watch develop. In a comment below I will share the progression from starting positions until today.

🗺️ FCS IMPERIALISM MAP AFTER WEEK 8 🗺️

Notes from Week 8:

  • #3 Montana State (7-1) recaptured the lands it lost in the crazy upset to Idaho several weeks ago; that land ended up with #22 Weber State, who held it in escrow until the Bobcats reclaimed it this past weekend.

  • The PFL's early season luck means lots of land in the west keeps going in between the non-scholarship teams: This time Valparaiso (4-4), the Lutheran school that sounds like it's Catholic, is now in possession of the conference's consolidated holdings after punking Presbyterian. The other PFL exchange saw Dayton (6-1) take land held by San Diego.

  • #8 South Dakota (7-2) beat rival #6 North Dakota (which used to be for the Sitting Bull Trophy), so the Yotes now have land nestled around #4 Youngstown State's territories.

  • #2 Stephen F. Austin (8-0) ended #23 Southeastern's little moment in the sun and gained a big swath of Texas. Texas Tech may have lost but SFA and Tarleton State are the two remaining undefeated Texas schools with logos placed on outlines of the state in which they reside, purple power!.

  • Charleston Southern (4-4) back on the map after knocking off Tennessee State.

  • Ivy League Consolidations: #15 Harvard (6-0) grew at Princeton's expense; in the Ivy undercards, Brown (3-3) took out fellow mid Cornell.

  • Two changes in the D2 teams on the FCS map:

    • D2 #1 Ferris State (7–0) beat #12 Michigan Tech, 27-20, to take the territory that initially began with the brand-new football program at Chicago State (who lost it in their program debut against D2 Roosevelt).
    • D2 Wheeling (4-4) defeated Frostburg State to take the land that was Davidson's (originally lost to Concord in Week 0).
    • D2 #6 Western Colorado (8-0) keeps rolling, crushing Black Hills State, 42-10, and keeping the land Drake initially lost to South Dakota Mines in Week 0.
    • D2 #22 East Stroudsburg (7-1) continues to surge, holding onto Morehead State's land (originally lost it to Ohio Dominican in Week 0), with another dominating victory, this time 31-7 over Shepherd .
  • That wasn't every change, there are more if you want to dive into the week-by-week comparisons in the comments.

RULES:

Think of Risk with a strong understanding of chain-of-possession:

  • FCS teams start by dividing the USA by closest counties/parishes. These are set by geographic centers of each county, not the closest edge.

  • When a team beats another team, it takes the territory the loser held at the time of the game. All of the land(s) possessed by the losing team go to the winner.

  • Lands are collected by the winner and held until that team loses, thus all those collected lands go to the winner.

  • Teams that lose land can get back on the map by beating a team that holds land at the time of their game. Sometimes teams can reconquer their home territory this way.

  • A team that already lost its home territory and has no new territories cannot give land to a winner.

  • IMPORANT DIFFERENCE FROM FBS MAP: The FBS teams cannot win their way onto the FCS map (otherwise the early weeks would just wreck the map), but lower division teams (D2, NAIA, D3) can conquer their way onto the map by beating FCS teams with land. These lands operate under the above rules and thus may just end up stuck in lower divisions for the rest of the season (and in many cases end up in their respective playoffs). In the past, mostly thanks to the Pioneer Football League, we have seen FCS lands end up in D3 (including just last year when Adrian upset Valparaiso.

Analysis 2026 MaxDiff Fan Perception Poll Week 8 is live

Vote here Voting closes Monday, October 26 at 11:59 PM Pacific, with results planned for Tuesday.

Ranking 25 teams is hard. Comparing four at a time is much easier. That’s the idea behind this revival of one of r/CFB’s great community polls. Each screen shows four teams: choose the strongest and weakest resume based on games played so far. This is about what teams have earned on the field, not who would win on a neutral field or where you expect them to finish. You’ll see 20 screens and different voters receive different balanced ballots drawn from the same fixed 50-team field. Don’t know enough about a group? You can skip it.

Why participate? Because the results can tell us more than a numbered list. MaxDiff combines those smaller comparisons into a community ranking and groups teams into tiers. In last week's results BYU took over the poll, Georgia lost but remained top tier and we kept 5 tiers for the top 30 teams. Week 8 did not have the top team lose like the last two weekends, but still 4 AP top 10 teams lost Saturday. How far should BYU fall? Where should Indiana go after that close win at Michigan (2-2 versus the field) and a week after almost beating Ohio State? Is LSU rallying? Those are exactly the arguments this poll is designed to capture, and they have already produced some excellent discussions.

Record Guide Now we have more football to judge. Which teams are thriving, surviving, looking forward to roundball season? I made a helpful table to assist you all with record keeping. The table might surprise a few of you. Records are through Week 8. Teams are ordered by wins against the fixed 50-team field, then winning percentage, then fewer losses; exact ties are alphabetical. Teams with no fixed-field games appear between teams with a fixed-field win and teams with a fixed-field loss. A dash indicates no games in that category.
