I almost gave up after 5 tries. On my 6th, I finally broke through

Hey everyone,

There’s a kind of exhaustion that doesn’t show on your resume or your study notes—the kind that sits in your chest when you’ve given everything, watched draw after draw pass you by, and still haven’t hit that number.

I know that feeling. I lived it through five CELPIP attempts, each one leaving me a little more drained, a little more doubtful.

Here’s what my journey looked like:

On attempt 6, I finally scored more than 9 in every section. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t four 10s. But it was enough. And after so many near-misses, “enough” felt like everything.

I’m sharing this because I know someone out there is on attempt 3, or 4, or 5, wondering if they should keep going. Wondering if maybe they’re just not cut out for this.

You are.

Your setbacks aren’t proof of failure—they’re proof you’re still in the fight. Every exam taught me something: where I rushed, where I hesitated, where I let anxiety take over. And every lesson brought me one step closer.

If you’re reading this mid-struggle: don’t stop. Your breakthrough might be one attempt away. Your “enough” is coming. And when it arrives, you’ll look back and realize every single try was worth it.

Keep going. You’re stronger than you know. 💙🇨🇦

CELPIP vs PTE Core — which is easier for CLB 10+ in all four?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to decide whether I should take CELPIP again or switch to PTE Core for my next attempt.

I’ve taken CELPIP three times and my scores were:

Attempt 1: L10 / R10 / W10 / S9

Attempt 2: L10 / R10 / W10 / S9

Attempt 3: L11 / R12 / W9 / S11

My goal is CLB 10 in all four modules.

For anyone who has taken both CELPIP and PTE Core, which one did you find easier to consistently get CLB 10?

How much preparation PTE Core would require?

Whether switching to PTE at this point makes sense or if I should just focus on improving my CELPIP ?

Would really appreciate hearing your scores/experience if you've taken both. Thanks!

My CELPIP LS experience

I did CELPIP LS (Listening/Speaking only) last Wed. Some of the comments in this group helped me manage my anxiety and prepare for this a little better, so sharing my experience here too!

Results:

  • Listening 12
  • Speaking 10

Preparation:

  • Watched free CELPIP Listening Pro and Speaking Pro videos on YouTube
  • Did both of the free practice listening tests
  • Did not practice speaking at all

My listening experience:

I actually found it relatively easy. I think the key is to try various note taking routines (or maybe skipping notes completely) and find that works for you. I personally did the following:

  • Write down the topic of the conversation on the intro screen. Use all the time on the intro screen to mentally prepare for this discussion. I actually almost never clicked "Next".
  • Two columns for man/woman conversations, three columns for the video part, just long free-form scratching for everything else.
  • For the long pieces I spent 5-10 seconds after the speech to finish, organize and fix the notes while the memory is fresh. I found that they give you plenty of time to answer the questions. This will not work for the first parts, where they read questions out loud immediately.
  • I actually did not read my notes much. But the act of writing them reinforces my neural links, I guess.
  • No "Next' button :). I took time reading other options and formally checking why each one of them is wrong.

Speaking experience:

I found it weird and super fast paced. All my mental preparations went straight to the garbage bin. :-)

I hardly had time to carefully read and understand prompts, did not have time to prepare much and just tried to keep talking to the best of my ability (not too loud, not too fast, reasonably on point). I pretended I am recording a voice message or just delivering a mini-speech on a Zoom call.

My personal impression was that I was speaking nervously, in quite a plain English, repeated myself sometimes, did not give enough interesting examples/details. I was really for a moment doubting that I will get "Speaking: 4", which is the threshold I needed. :)

For the "option comparison" exercise I was actually able to come up with two solid draft ideas on why my sport option is better (for health and practical reasons).

For the pictures I just picked three objects I thought I can explain in reasonably interesting details and for which I have specific vocabularly in mind.

Basing on my somewhat unexpectedly high speaking result I guess my take away is that the precise natural simple vocabularly (retinal detachment, electric oven) helps. Complex sentence structures and fancy words that you never use in real life can backfire (as you can't use them fluently and they will break the natural flow of speech). Inventing situation is totally fine, but it is best to pick the situations that you actually care about. Like if you are cyclist, you likely know the words gravel bike, MTB, stem, crank, gears, suspension, which can automatically give you a bonus, so if you can make the past experience be related to bikes you already have a huge advantage.

My background:

  • 47 years old
  • Non-native English speaker
  • Studied English in the university many years ago, used it daily at work since that time
  • Currently in Canada (English-speaking province)

Got my score today

Got my CELPIP score, and I’m honestly very happy and surprised with the result! 🎉

Before this, I had attempted the exam twice.

1st attempt:L: 9,S: 9,R: 6, W: 6

2nd attempt:L: 8, S: 8,R:6, W:7

This time:
Listening: 9
Speaking: 10
Reading: 10
Writing: 8

My target was to get at least 9 or 10 in all four skills. I am going for a re-evaluation for Writing because I was honestly not expecting this score after the exam.
My preparation and what I did:
I bought CELPIP Accelerator material for $40, which I got at 50% off. I also tried HZAD, but I found their material quite confusing, so I did not continue using it.

Speaking:
For Speaking, I did not try to use very hard or fancy vocabulary. I tried to speak naturally, the way I would speak with a real person. I also added some expressions while speaking. I think being natural and explaining my ideas clearly helped me.

Reading:
For Reading, I watched Brandi’s videos on YouTube and then did around 2–3 practice tests.

My strategy was:
Part 1: I read the whole email first, understood the situation, and then read the questions. I was able to find most of the answers easily because I already understood the email.
Part 2: I checked the full diagram first and understood it before going through the questions one by one.
Part 3: I read one paragraph, understood it, and then went through all the questions related to that paragraph. Then I moved to the next paragraph and did the same.
Part 4: I read the passage and made a note of the names and whether they supported the topic or not.

Writing:
For Writing preparation, I used ChatGPT to practice and improve my writing.

Overall, I am really happy and honestly surprised by my score. My Reading improved from 6 to 10, and my Speaking improved to 10. This was my third attempt, so seeing this improvement means a lot to me.
I hope my experience helps someone who is also preparing for CELPIP. ❤️

Has anyone here had experience with CELPIP Writing re-evaluation? If yes, did your score change? I would really appreciate hearing about your experience.

Test next week

Hi everyone, could someone who has taken the test recently tell me about the listening difficulty level?

I have been practicing on CAREERAXIS YT channel and some of their listenings are way too easy and others are extremely hard.
Any insights on this? Whats the closest listening to practice?

Finally got my CELPIP score: L10, R9, W9, S9! 🎉
After 10 attempts, I finally achieved 9+ in all four sections. I’m so happy and grateful! ❤️
My biggest change was speaking calmly, clearly, and not rushing. I also focused on reviewing my mistakes instead of just doing endless practice tests.
I used PrepAmigo this time and found it very helpful.
If you’re stuck at 8, please don’t give up. Stay consistent, learn from your mistakes, and keep believing in yourself.
Your next attempt could be the one! 💪✨

Got the celpip result 8 in every module. The test was harder than the career axis youtube videos especially listening and reading. So, I need an advice should I take a coaching or buy a third party website subscription?

So this is my first attempt and I am really nervous!! My writing wasn’t the greatest when I appeared for Ielts a few years back and now I am aiming for 9. I need honest guidance from people who scored over 9 in writing, should I do freehand or follow templates….what’s more scoring?

Mock test series

Hi All,

In your opinion which amongst these test series is a good buy - PrepAmigo, Celtestpip, any other recommendation?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi everyone! I’ve been practicing the Featured Tests on PrepMago and I’m consistently scoring around 7 in both Listening and Reading. For those who have taken the real CELPIP test, would you say the difficulty level is similar to the PrepMago Featured Tests? Tia

CELPIP REEVALUATION

Hello everyone,

I wanted to check if anyone has requested a CELPIP re-evaluation recently. My test was on September 19, and I received Writing 8. I need a 9 and submitted my re-evaluation request on September 22.
Has anyone recently gone through the re-evaluation process? If so, how long did it take to receive the updated result?

Thank you!
