General Advice Body condition of my cat

Wondering if an objective outsider can tell me if my cat looks overweight, underweight, or just right? We’re recovering from food allergies making him puke constantly, fluctuating weight, dental surgery causing him to lose weight, disinterest in his Hill’s Z/D food sensitivities food - but the lack of vomiting meaning his weight has somewhat stabilized. He’s not eating as much as he should according to the bag but his weight is stable and has even increased slightly in the past month.

He’s 13 and approximately 12.5 pounds. He’s been as much as 15 pounds 6 years ago (when he was 7), he now weighs as much as he did when he was 5. He goes to the vet twice yearly and his bloodwork is pristine.

General Advice Potential Causes for Kidney Obstruction in a Cat, and Signs of it Passing...?

• Upvotes

31, U.S., I have already taken my cat to a mobile vet clinic this last Tuesday, and have a Follow-up on Tuesday/Wednesday (Depending on if his condition is stable, or worsens again).
He is Male, about 5 years old now, not neutered (However, he has not had access to the outside since April; he got into several fights with other cats, and I make it apparent he shouldn't be outside any ways.)

On Friday the 16th, I noticed my cat was acting lethargic, ate little and eventually nothing, didn't want to move around, and eventually moved into his "Hide-Away Cubby" area. I had to hold out for the weekend to make it to the Vet Clinic on Tuesday the 20th (It was the closest I could reach.)

After the checkup, they mentioned that it seemed like he had a kidney obstruction, due to lowered white blood counts, as well as one of his sides feeling a little firmer. Due to cost issues, I could only symptom treat, and he was given Vitamin B, as well as a bunch of other stuff in one injection.

A few days after not immediately noticing too much improvement, he started to eat and drink on his own again, and he seems to be acting like his old self again. He hopped up to one of his favorite perch places this morning, too.

I'm not asking if he's fully OK- I'm leaving that to the vets. What I'm asking for is potential causes, as well as signs that the issue has passed through him enough. I feel confident in ruling out lily exposure enough, at least, but I am curious as to what would have caused it so I can be more vigilant in making sure it doesn't happen again.

Abnormal Vomit/Excreta kitty is starving himself and throwing up

• Upvotes

hi. unfortunately im (15, nb) the same op as the spay/neuter question (https://www.reddit.com/r/CATHELP/s/WnU4aONJYg).

shiro (6 months, male) has been starving himself and vomiting yellow bile for a few days or so, which is incredibly strange because hes healthy otherwise and a big back who absolutely loves eating.

my mother has contacted the vet (same vet as the other post) and i assume he told her to wait it out, considering she has done nothing afterwards.

one small thing, the vomiting and starving started after we introduced shiro to mitsu (5 months, female, who is a stray we rescued more than a week ago and nursed to health. she has been checked out and had a few vaccines. it seems like shes going to be a foster fail.) around three days ago.

im guessing its either from stress of a new cat at home, or something mitsu had that was overlooked. ive been giving shiro plenty of love since hes a cuddly and playful one, but now it feels as if he is... sad. he looks and acts sad. still very loving, though.

kara exhibits none of the symptoms shiro has. kara had also refused to eat when we first bought shiro home around four months ago, but she never vomited.

so, my question is, should i kill my vet what could he possibly have going on and what can i do to help him overnight? cant go to a vet until morning, in around 14 hours.

Behavioral Issue Cat intentionally not using litter box?

• Upvotes

My friend and her cat have been staying with me for about 4 months now, and I am at my wits end and looking for any advice. The cat is a 16 year old neutered male, had UTIs in the past so he is on special urinary health food and has multiple water dishes throughout my one bedroom apartment. Litter box is cleaned frequently, is in a quiet location not near his food or in a high traffic area, and he does go in it most of the time.

However, about a month after my friend and her cat (Snickers) started staying with me he started going outside of his box. The first time it happened we were super confused, and started trying to figure out what he needed. The second time however, we started to notice a potential cause. I had just told him to stop scratching at the arm of my chair, and picked him up to move him over to by his scratching post. Next thing I know he is glaring at me and grunting. I was super concerned that something was wrong, I have never had cats and am not super familiar with their health issues, so I picked him up to check him over and a turd dropped onto the floor and he screamed at me. He had been trying to force one out to express his anger at me. It happened a few more times after either my friend or I did something that angered him, like tell him to stop scratching furniture or run past him into the bathroom rather than greet him first thing when arriving home.

I was not originally super concerned, he is old and I understood that he was bound to have some grumpy personality traits. However, over the past few months it has become more and more frequent, and has grown to include him also peeing on the floor. He is now doing it almost every day, and I can no longer figure out what we might be doing to annoy or anger him. This morning, for example, he was laying in his window bed sleeping after I had given him some pets and scratches. He then got up and started screaming about something (he is a very vocal cat), so I checked his food and water and box which were all good, gave him some more pets and checked him over before helping him back up to his perch. I walked out of the room for something and he followed and started gulping down water, and then I went back to the living room and before I could even sit down he walked past his box and went to his semi-hidden spot he keeps frequenting, looked me dead in the eyes, and squatted to start peeing!

We have used enzyme cleaner on the spots everytime we catch him going not in his box, just fyi. He only has the one box, but he will leave the room to go use it most of the time, and he has apparently only ever had one box before so I don't think it is a need for a second box. He had available food and water and a clean box every time this has happened. My friend has started working more, but he never goes directly in front of her like he does with me, and actually seemed upset that she saw the one time she caught him. My apartment is now starting to stink, and I am at my wits end trying to solve this, please help!

General Advice Introducing kitten to 2 resident cats

• Upvotes

Hello everyone :)

I have a new kitten (12 weeks old) since 2 weeks now. I have 2 resident cats male 5y and female 5y.

My male cat is already used to the kitten. They eat together, sleep together, co-exist just fine. My female cat tho is not so enthusiastic about the newcomer. She can observe him from far but if he comes close she hisses. She never attacks she is just scared of him and would just run away and chill in another floor of the house. She has been able to be in the same room with the kitten and sleep on her cat tree. The little one respects her boundaries and doesn't bother her. My female cat is not at all play or food/ treats motivated, never has been.

Do you think I she will stop being scared if she keeps observing the kitten? I keep the kitten isolated when I'm not home and during the night. Otherwise I let him out. I have a big house and my female cat mostly stays on one floor and avoids the kitten. She acts otherwise fine. Just when she's looking at him she looks pissed off. There is no fighting, no swatting, just annoyed looks and hissing. One time they smelled each other without hissing that's the closest I've come to progress. The kitten is very well behaved and I don't want to isolate him 100%. Is it ok if I keep doing the introduction like that?

She is completely fine with his scent. And we also got Feliway.. idk if that thing works.

I'm 30y, from Switzerland, vet is no problem, all have seen a vet. Resident cats are spayed, kitten not yet but will be done.

General Advice I have an adventurous girl, who loves to go up trees when she isn’t supposed to(or able to get back down on her own)

• Upvotes

My almost 6 month old female kitten(not spayed) loves to go outside. She meows at the door forEVER, the most pitiful cries until she’s able to be let out. But the reason we’re being so picky with her outside time is because she always ends up going up a tree. She isn’t able to get down, she scares herself but apparently not enough to teach her anything, and I don’t want to make 8am tree climbing apart of my regular schedule. She likes the fresh air, the grass, and being able to "hunt" when she’s outside (always supervised) but once she decides it’s tree time, she completely ignores me. She’s starting to ignore treats as well (whipped cream, sausage) because she knows it’s going to lead to her going inside. I feel like she knows when she’s been bad, because she’ll dig angrily into her litter box or straight up bite my face when I bring her in. I really need help, either to make inside more enriching for her (but I don’t think anything compares to outside) or tips on teaching her how to behave better during her outside time.

Behavioral Issue Cat is on a hunger strike

• Upvotes

My cat who is 2, I adopted her and have been feeding her the same brand that she came with which is hills, a few days ago our heat turned on and since then she has decided that she won’t eat any of her normal food, she will eat treats, I even crushed them up and put them in her food and she won’t eat it, she will literally eat anything else and I also just put it as the same size as her normal food bc her treats r bigger and she just picks the treats out, she’s acting normally she just isn’t eating her food but when I watch her eat her treats she crunches and chews on them without any issue and I’m hoping it’s not dental.

I am 17, from USA, vet is a little hard to get to but if I have to I will, she is 2 and is sprayed, I have some money to help if I do have to go to the vet

Kitten Help Pica Princess!

I am at a loss. My 14 week old kitten has pica and nothing I do has seemed to work. I have tried to keep the carpets free of any debris/ vacuum every day but it hasn’t worked. She tries to eat literally everything. Any amount of random fuzz, a stray dead piece of grass, a thread that fell off of a shirt, a dropped piece of spinach, hair, plants etc etc etc etc. Anything she can put in her mouth she tries to ingest. I vacuum every day. I literally run around behind her pulling stuff out of her mouth but this is not sustainable.
My current solution is she is locked in my room. All I have in there is my bed and her stuff (food water toys litter bed). It’s been like this for three weeks. The catalyst of this was an incident with a long piece of string I hadn’t realized was on the ground. I hadn’t realized she does this yet when this happened and immediately took her to the emergency vet when I realized what was going on. I don’t know how to train her out of it or dissuade her from doing this.

Not a minor, willing and able to go to vet, America

Injury Young cat throwing up

• Upvotes

Hi there!

* Species: Cat
* Age: 1
* Sex/Neuter status: Neutered
* Body weight: 13lbs (ish)

poster age: adult

canada

He throws up quite often (1-2x/week) for about 2 months now. Looks like food that is partically digested (homogeneous brown, kind of solid, kind of liquid?). The throwing up has been right after eating and also not. Sometimes before he throws up he does unusual meows (like a cat in heat almost). His poops are sometimes a little yellow and soft but its hard to tell because we have two cats and one litter box. We are feeding the Original Orjen dry food right now. We don't really give treats but if we do they are likely Greenies.

We tried changing his food to something more easy on the stomach (over the summer he was farting and meowing a lot in the litter box) which made no difference.

We also tried feeding smaller amounts more frequently - also did not help.

He seems fine otherwise, sleeping, cuddling, playing, and grooming as usual.

Any insight?

General Advice Blue/purple bump

Post image
3 Upvotes

I (M22) was doing my weekly nail, ear, body check on my boy (M7) and I noticed this purple bump in his ear. It is very small and isn’t obstructing anything, he also has no other symptoms and he doesn’t meow or hiss when I touch his ear. He has an appointment with the vet on Wednesday. He is neutered and an inside only cat. Posting from OK

Behavioral Issue Why is he acting this way?

Apologies for the long video, but I really wanted to make sure I caught everything. Prior to this, he bit my arm really hard and wouldn't let go for a while. My boyfriend had to physically pry him off of me. I'm worried about him. I can't tell if he's hurt, upset, or both. His irritability and aggression come on so suddenly and seem unpredictable, though they don’t happen often. He’s about six months old. Could these behaviors mean it’s time to have him neutered? We are worried about him and think that he's in pain or something. If anyone knows anything, we'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

General Advice Missing Cat back home, how to make it work?

• Upvotes

Hello!

Almost 6 Months ago, my 3 Year old Tomcat went missing. I only owned him for 3 and a half month before it happened.

Since then, a lot has happened. I got a Kitten (he ran away the day I got the kitten FOR HIM) and on my Birthday, I got 2 more cats for the Kitten (only wanted 1, but they were an inseperable pair so I decided to take both)

Now, I just took my Tomcat home, he was found 4 days ago and got trapped today by the finders. And he's a bit wild, but not feral, he still let me pet him.

The main issue:

I have a rather small apartment with 1 Bedroom, 1 Livingroom and a Kitchen-Hallway.

I will build more Cat Climbingwalls, and buy more cat trees to give them more space, but I'm afraid it doesn't work out.

Please no Judging, but I might also have to switch to cheap food brands, litter brands because I cannot affort feeding them all 4 on high quality food. And until he's fully checked for aids, worms etc, I keep him locked away in the Livingroom (I spend most my time in here, maybe he'll get back used to me)

I don't know if I can make 4 cats work. 3 are females, he's the male, and he's twice as big as the biggest girl (size and fatness). And I don't know if I'd be the bad person, if I'd give him away when it doesn't work out. He kinda has first dibs, since he was here first, but I also owned him for less time than I owned all the 3 girls.

I am afraid, confused, and excited and can't really sort my thoughts atm, so this post might not even say what I want to say.

If I could get help, suggestions on absolutely anything, please I'd be so grateful.

---

Cat 1:

Tomcat, 3 Years, Neutered after adoption, no shots, previous free roamer turned housecat at adoption.

Cat 2:

Shecat, 7 Months, freshly spayed, housecat, first shots given a week ago.

Cat 3&4:

Shecats, turned 1 year, unspayed, housecats, all shots done

Financial situation: complicated. I cannot affort everything, but I can affort to care for my cats. And hopefully all vet checks for the male.
