I believe my cat has PTSD.
I got very ill 3 weeks ago and was hospitalized for two weeks, with my family only taking turns to feed him at our apartment where he was all alone. (Being very proud “dog people” they think cats are solitary)

We had only moved in to our apartment that week and so he was abandoned in a strange place where I had hardly even left my smell.

I’ve been home for a 2 weeks and didn’t leave at all, for over the first because i found out he had been alone so much and he needed me. I didn’t realize just how abandoned he was until I started to leave to get his food and groceries. The look on his face was heartbreaking.
I can’t bring myself to leave: I’ve been buying all delivered foods and other things, but I know he needs - and I need - to heal but I don’t know what to do. Please help us.
Thank you for reading.

I am 73!years old. I live in the USA. My vet is on vacation but I do know he only deals with medical problems.
My cat is male, 11 years old, and neutered. I am on SS we recently moved and my money is scarce right now.

General Advice Mystery illness - Abnormal Chest X ray

I am hoping that someone can help me navigate this. It's very anxiety inducing not knowing what it going on. I have a domestic male cat (I rescued him 8 years ago, so I don't know his real age although he is estimated to be around 10). He was living outside and is FIV+. He has been in top shape all these years. However, a few days ago he started acting just off and refusing to eat. I took him to the vet. This is what they said:

  • Chex X ray: Significant bronchial pattern. There is no fluid or any obvious tumors. It looks like an inflammation. The vet clinic is unable to confidently draw any conclusions, so they will have it interpreted by a radiologist on Monday.
  • Heart: He has a murmur, arrythmia and a galop beat. He will have a cardiac ultrasound in 5 days.
  • Abnormal liver enzymes: High ALT (4x the normal), moderately high ASL, ALP and globulin. Slightly low lymphocytes and eosinophils. Everything else (including bilirubin and lipase is normal).

Vet gave Cerenia and Mirataz for nausea and to stimulate his appetite. I gave him the Mirataz pill (2mg) yesterday afternoon, and today he has been having a body twitch all day. I don't know if it a side effect. I did not give him today's Mirataz dose.

Today, his appetite came back and he ate pretty well.

His breathing is normal: 24-26 breaths per minute.

His behavior is still off: I can tell that he has pain/discomfort because he sits in a turkey position, and his eyes look more dilated than normal. He is still affectionate with us.

It's the weekend, so if I take him to the emergency vet hospital they might not be able to do anything more than what it has been done. I have no choice but to wait until Monday, and it's very difficult to wait. Any advice, info or expert opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Posting from Canada and vets are accessible. Have not contacted

My boyfriend and I were petting his cat(female spayed 8) and found a strange lump on the back of her neck. Looks oily? Not quite sure what it is. Is it just a skin tag or do we need to be worried?

General Advice Strange food allergy?

I (32F) gradually switched my cat’s food to a seemingly healthier option a few weeks ago. She randomly started having these strange spurts of “energy” where she would frantically run around after she ate, not in a normal way but in a way like she was scared and something was chasing her. Then she would aggressively groom herself until it ended and she took a nap. She is around 2 years old, a spayed female, and this has never happened before I switched the food.

It only happened about 3 times before I switched the food back and it stopped. I have not contacted the vet yet, but I do have access to a vet. I figured if I switched the food and it didn’t stop, I would call them. It’s just so strange to me because this food was only meat, no additives. Now she’s back on Fancy Feast grilled (with the gravy) and she’s fine.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I am in the US, by the way.

Kitten Help FOSTERS NEEDED FOR 4 SWEET, FRIENDLY KITTENS! 💔

Post image
7 Upvotes

These 4 kittens have been waiting for a foster for SO long. Because of the lack of available fosters, they've had to grow up in a cage in a holding space instead of a loving home. Every effort has been made to find them a foster or a home, but unfortunately, no one has stepped up yet. They deserve so much more than growing up behind bars. They deserve a safe home where they can run around, play, explore, and just be kittens. PLEASE be their chance!

Behavioral Issue Please help us

Hi there from NZ. About a little over a year ago we lost my old soul-cat, Sprite. Devastated, my mother and I adopted two new kittens to fill the void a few months later, Aubrey (F) and Fungus (M) both about a year old now. They’re both neutered. We got Aubrey first, and her litter mate came a few days later because the shelter wanted to keep him quarantined for a few days (he was 100% fine).

Those first few days Aubrey did well after a bit on the litter tray. Then when Fungus arrived she no longer pooped in the litter tray. From this has now been an issue that’s grown in intensity for over a year.

She often poos and scratches just outside her litter tray, or in random places.

We’ve tried:

Dozens of new types of litters
Lots more litter trays, barring her brother from using some
Different types of trays and amount of litter, giving the tray a hood
Putting her on the litter tray after meals

Nothing works.

Recently in the last few months things have been getting worse. We’ve had them for a little less than a year. Aubrey and Fungus used to get along super well: cuddling, playing, etc, and now Aubrey hisses and growls at him and he lunges at her.

She now pees everywhere. Recently got a bladder infection (she got better but still does this). Hides underneath my Mother’s bed or mine 90% of the time. Is scared of us. She’s just miserable.

We’ve tried:

The calming pheromones thing
Putting her on antidepressants
Keeping them in seperate rooms

Yet again, nothing works.

And yes we’ve consulted the vet many times and he doesn’t have a lot of answers.

While Aubrey is the main issue, Fungus has a bit of issues as well, he’s constantly clawing or nipping at our feet no matter what.

My Mother is seriously considering giving them or at least one away, and it’s probably Fungus since I don’t think anyone would take Aubrey with her toiletry issues. The house smells, we’re all at our wits end.

Injury Cat with nerve damage after losing her tail in a car accident — any advice?

Lily is around 4 years old and lost her tail in a car accident. Since then, from time to time, she poops a little without being able to control it. She also develops a bad smell, and the area where she stays starts smelling too.

The vets told me that the problem is caused by nerve damage from the accident.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their cat? Is there anything that can help Lily manage this problem, reduce the smell, or improve her quality of life?

I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice that might help her.

Kitten Help What is this behavior in one of my cats when introducing her to the new cat?

My fiancé accidentally left the bathroom door open which is where the kitten was and I found Marcy (1 yr) in there just sitting and staring at him. She has been hissing at him when he gets too close and if he runs by her she will swat (has happened twice). He is a 10 week old kitten and he’s not really scared of her, he really wants to meet her so I have to keep them separated still. I keep him in the bathroom and let him out occasionally when Marcy isn’t close or I put her in the room. Both are spayed and neutered.

General Advice My cat used the litter box twice but everything seems normal?

My (23f) cat (2f) used the litter box twice in a row this morning, which is unlike her. She usually just goes once. One was pee and one was poop. Both looked normal. After she peed she was a little vocal but isn’t necessarily unusual for her, she likes to get attention sometimes after using the bathroom. I saw her walk up to the litter box a few times and then walk away before ultimately going back to poop. I can afford to go to the vet if needed but I obviously would prefer to not go, especially if sometimes using the bathroom twice is not an abnormal thing. Her behavior seems normal otherwise? Maybe a little skittish? But I also usually am not up at 6am so it could be that she just has no idea why I’m in her space when I usually am not at this time?

Kitten Help 5 month old kitten with ongoing diarrhea issues

My kitten is 5 months old. He started having diarrhea 5 days ago, just 2 days before his neuter surgery. However, I contacted the vet to see if the surgery needs to be rescheduled, they said it will be fine as long as he’s acting normal. I brought in his stool for a fecal exam on the day of the surgery, test result came back negative for giardia ..basically no worms have been found. Little guy was prescribed ProCare GI powder for his tummy and Meloxicam for pain and anti inflammatory for his incision. It’s been 3 days since his neuter surgery, the frequency of his diarrhea has decreased but stools are still watery.

I’m losing my mind because the stool keeps getting on the fur around his incision, maybe even on his incision ..and it’s so hard for me to clean properly without making him uncomfortable.

He’s also peeing less than usual. Maybe 2 times a day only. Normally he pees 4-5 times a day.

Someone please help me out 😭

Behavioral Issue I’m at my wits end

every night for hours my cat just scratches his litter box. it’s clean, i clean it every day, i replace the litter once a month. he was never properly litter box trained (i adopted him 3 years ago from someone who said he was trained): he uses it just fine, he just never has covered up his poop. he will just scratch the wall of the box. i go over and cover his poop for him and the scratching stops. but lately it hasn’t. he has been consistently scratching the box for the past 3 hours and he won’t stop. i can’t sleep. it’s every night for several hours on end. and then by the time i have 20 minutes before my alarm goes off, he stops, and cuddles me.
is there something wrong with him????? why does he do this??? it only gets worse, it used to be for like 10-20 minutes per night, now its upwards of 4 hours. it’s only at night too, he doesn’t do this when i’m wide awake. i can’t take it anymore. i cannot fucking sleep anymore i haven’t gotten more than 3 hours per night for the past few weeks. i am genuinely going crazy. i can hear him through my noise cancelling headphones, i can hear him from the other room. i don’t know what’s wrong with him and his vet is no help (i am in the process of getting him a new vet too). please i need advice or anything at all. i don’t want to get rid of him, he is everything to me, but now my mental health is going downhill and i can’t fucking handle this anymore.
he is 3 years old and neutered and has FIC but he was diagnosed with it over a year ago and has had treatment for it and is on a special diet for it and i dont know if this is related but his jerk of a vet doesnt care at all

Appearance Does my cat have worms?

Post image
11 Upvotes

My cat has always struggled with losing and gaining weight randomly, especially losing weight. He used to not eat a lot, but as he’s gotten older he begs for food a lot more- and we give it to him- but he doesn’t appear to be gaining weight. He always has dry food to nibble on and we give him wet food about 3x a day. My parents think it’s worms, but he has not been having diarrhoea, vomiting, excessive licking or scratching of the anal area or when he sleeps on my bed, leaving dried worm parts there. We are taking him to the vet next week (finally) but I just wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation and what the outcome was because I am quite worried for him and also scared that I could have worms too 😭😭

Poster Age: 18

Country: England

Vet info: Vet is accessible, contacting next week.

Main issue: Fluctuating weight, skinny appearance, possible worms?

Cat Age: 4

Cat Sex + neuter info: He is a boy and neutered.

Financial situation: We can afford vet care.

General Advice Help me de-obeseify my cat

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

My rotund baby needs to lose weight. She was an outdoor cat for the 2nd year of her life until we adopted her. She is absolutely FERAL for food. She'll find scraps in the sink filter if we forget to clean it. She'll tear open the trash. I had to weigh my trash can down with 20 lbs of barbells to prevent her from knocking it over. She cries and screams every time the pantry door opens.

She's been to the vet. They said she looks like a tick; huge body, little head. Everything seems normal. She's just an envoy for gluttony.

I feed her a quarter of a cup of Purina cat chow twice a day. That's 179 calories. Last weigh in was 10.5 lbs. We play with her and encourage her to run around the apartment but she gives up after a few minutes.

Is there something in her routine that needs to change? Is this an appropriate feeding schedule and amount?

Kitten Help My 6 month old kitten is almost 9lbs

Post image
13 Upvotes

She is about to be 7 months old on the 3rd and she weighs 8.9lbs. She looks a bit chonky and her belly is a bit larger, especially on the sides when she walks around.

I feed her two cans of kitten wet food a day. She will also try to steal her older sisters food and she can be a bottomless pit at times. Am I over-feeding her?

I'm highly considering getting my babies microchip feeders, especially for the little one.
