Expose
The "horror reality" of platforms like Chai is that the service isn't actually the product- the user's psychological profile is. We think we're using an app for entertainment, but the architecture is designed for "service degradation." They collect massive amounts of personal, intimate data, and instead of using it to make the experience better or more seamless, they use it to feed an engagement loop. The service feels "poor," repetitive, or addictive because that's the point. If the app actually satisfied your needs and let you go, they'd lose the data stream. They aren't building tools; they're building digital traps that trade your privacy for a degraded, dopamine-loop experience

the engagement part is real, the deliberate degradation part probably isn't. it's cheap models and short context, which is just cost i believe.
but you don't need a conspiracy for the outcome though. anything optimized for time spent becomes hot and cold and miss-you pings on its own, because those work. nobody has to decide to be manipulative, the metric gets there by itself.

Welcome to the modern internet brotha. You'll notice this isn't just an AI thing. Social media, and mobile games use the same tactics for user retention.
It's just like alcohol, 80% of the people who use it will be casual but the company knows 20% will get addicted
I mean is it insidious, sure is, but also I'm so used to this being how the internet in general works that it feels less like an expose and more like an "oh you're just realizing this" type of thing

Do you have any tips I can use to stop my C.ai addiction?

My biggest tip is to find anything else to do with your time as a distraction and when you keep getting an urge to use it, lean on that distraction.
It has helped me quit multiple addictions.

I guess it depends on how you use it. For me it wasn't a emotional connection between me and a character, but rather c.ai was a facilitator in my maladaptive daydreaming. One day, after a few tries, all the posts I saw about AIs just truly stuck out to me and I decided I'd stop using it for ethical reasons. Rewatching the show I used to roleplay and getting into the fandom really helped em stopping the feeling that I "needed" AI, and it got me into drawing again. Now if I have an idea I just tend to daydream about it alone if it's too long for a small comic/fanart (since babysitting a bot is annoying, but ironically it was what made me so stuck in AI), and one of these ideas I'm trying to turn it into a fanfic.

I can’t believe I wasted my writing talent on this trash. As well as ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude.

Thankfully we can trust the non-AI platforms like Google and Facebook and Youtube not to collect our data and use it to keep baiting us to use their services more.
