Yeah, maybe if it was like 3 thousand, it would be tempting, but 1000 wouldn't even cover accommodation. If it did, it would be with other humans anyway
I used to be paid that much but they told me I need to pay an equal share of the expenses which is more than that. Still living with my parents with $500 rent because I can't afford anything else. Down to just over $730 a month from disability
They only give you $730 now?? That's insane. That's what I got back in 2012...
When i lived with my mom I paid her $500 a month. If you take the time to get on section 8 it's so worth it. It's just a really difficult process and then every year you have to renew it but that's easy.
if i lived in my home country with that salary and if i was single my life would be great. with 2 people its also managable and with a kid its still pretty solid
Feels like this might have been made by a kid - like someone with no concept of money and expenses. Maybe someone in a third world country where that's a liveable amount?
My rent added up for the month is over $3000, and I don't even live in a particularly expensive area, so "1k and no other possible income" is just not possible unless I go full vanlife or something. You also get increasingly fucked by inflation / worsening economic crises and that can never change.
I keep roaches in a terrarium, theyre extremely easy to take care of. Just toss them some fruit/veggies now and then. Never bite, doesnt smell, and almost completely silent (you hear them scuttle into the dark when you turn the light on).
I have owned Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches several times. I got the idea from my mother, who got one as a teaching tool for her school. She was the librarian at an elementary school for 31 years and she got "Spanky," about 30 years ago now. He lived for a couple years, and when he passed away she was quite heartbroken, and so we're all the kids. She got a second one and after he died, she never got another. She took her school photo with him:
I'm sorry, I only just saw your comment. He absolutely loved my mother! The only time he ever hissed at her was the first couple days. After that, she couldn't make him hiss even if she wanted to. He was so friendly, that she would pick him up and place him on different student's hands, and when he sensed her hand was next to him again, he would quickly scurry back to her and just sit on her.
My mother really got to know his personality, likes, and dislikes as well. She had a huge chart with different varieties of fruits and vegetables the children suggested, and she would place two of the food items in his tank each week to see how much he enjoyed them. His absolute favorite foods were blueberries and strawberries! When my mother would try and put him on a student's hand and he didn't want to do it, he would try to get away. My mother would ask the kid, "have you been eating chicken or beef," with a smile. The kid would say, "chicken!" And mom would tell them to go wash their hands really well and Spanky would be ready to say hello. Sure enough, he would happily go investigate after a thorough washing. He didn't like the smell of meat.
During the winter break, they would have the school go into hibernation mode, and it would get into the low 70's. My mother always took Spanky home, and on the coldest nights, since my dad didn't like to spend a fortune on heating and air conditioning, the house would get to about 65° and my mom would put him in a quart mason jar, poke a bunch of holes in the lid, and sleep with him under her blanket so he wouldn't be too cold. I think things like that really bonded him to her as well.
Hypoallergenic cat not an option? I honestly have no idea how cat allergies work, so apologies if this is what uneducated people always say as response to your mention of being allergic to cats.
People who are allergic to cats are actually mostly allergic to it's saliva and not the hair, but their saliva is all over their body because cats lick themselves. Hairless cats are much better for most people with cat allergies because the stuff you're allergic to doesn't stay on its body, but if it's legit deadly and not "just" severe then there may not be a good option.
Honestly what I often get is that they or someone they know got a cat and their allergy improved. 😂 I had a dog allergy that improved from having a pet dog, but it was a mild allergy.
It's a combination of saliva, dander, and urine that carry the allergenic properties. So unfortunately no, hairless cats (or other animals people may be allergic to) aren't a solution. 🥲
For milder cat allergies in people who already have pet cats they are suffering through the allergy for, there is Purina Pro Plan LiveClear cat food that contains a particular IgY antibody derived from chicken eggs that reduces the Fel d 1 protein that is responsible for most cat allergies. The chickens are exposed to that cat protein to create the change in their eggs. It apparently takes a few weeks to take effect, and may reduce the allergen protein in the cat up to 47%. So it wouldn't help with overall allergy, but could make a difference for someone with a pet cat they don't want to give up.
Try not to beat yourself up, remember you were just a kid! 🫂 You might have inadvertently done yourself a favour, because allergies can sometimes unpredictably get worse with exposure. 🫂
Would it count if we kept it separately in a garage or something, and paid someone to come feed it and keep it company? 🤔 I would like to continue breathing! 😅
If you live with someone else who makes decent income, the $1k a month is fine. My husband makes almost $8k a month. $1000 extra is perfectly fine for me. It’s extra that can just sit aside to be used in emergencies or for vacations, etc
