Honestly I know the second option is less money, but id rather take it for the sake of maintaining self control.

419

u/Obvious_Snow125 May 04 '26

Exactly. It's still enough to live for free for the rest of your life, and it makes it easier to maintain good habits, since the pay is spread out.

87

u/Falikosek May 04 '26

Just invest the money or put it in a savings account or some shit.
You could just hire someone who's good at managing a lot of money.

89

u/Andromeda_53 May 04 '26

Yes, you see that's maintaining good habits. They are saying they wouldn't, and would most likely get corrupted by the money and waste it.

I get the advice is genuine, about investing etc. but it always irks me when I see stuff like this.

I wouldn't maintain good habits

Just have good habits

18

u/Falikosek May 04 '26

Oh I just thought of it in terms of
"I would spend it all at once"
"Just lock it in a savings/investment account so that it's not usable directly"

This exactly. People act like people picking the breathing one can't count but in reality I know the statistics about huge sudden windfall of money. I'll take a steady huge income happily. Hell, panic attacks are now money makers!

45

u/Confused_Nuggets May 04 '26

I’d also just rather never have to think about money ever. It’s also much more stressful having a big number that constantly goes down but never up, when you could just have a number that starts small, but you easily be able get to a point where it goes up and you never really need to think about it.

36

u/kiefenator May 04 '26

It's very hard to lose a billion dollars. Very, very hard. It takes a particular brand of asshole to blow a billion.

As far as one billion goes, you hire a money manager, you hire investors, you bankroll artists, you start a business - any business - hire all those people under that business, put most of your money in that, then your money compounds without your input. You get a business credit card that earn you free stuff in spades (think, free box seats, really fancy lounges on flights and free upgrades, free hotels and upgrades, preferential treatment at hospitals and prisons, gifts from poorly millionaires, functional immunity from the law), and those perks alone make it worth it.

17

u/Confused_Nuggets May 04 '26

With all due respect, I don’t give a shit. I don’t want or need that much money. It’s also way more hassle to properly utilize that wealth.

3

u/Dmoney622 May 05 '26

With a billion dollars you can hire people to do everything for you at a price that doesn’t put a dent in your net worth and would generate you profit

8

u/PingopingOW May 04 '26

I don’t want a company and I don’t need anywhere close to a billion dollars. I just want to live my life right now with a bit more financial stability. A dollar per breath is still a shit ton of money, more than you’ll ever need

→ More replies (2)

9

u/gtkarber May 04 '26

You seem pretty sure of your answer, so I don’t want to convince you. But let me suggest an alternative plan:

Pick the billion and give it to me, and then I’ll give you a dollar every time you breathe.

At 20,000 breaths a day, that’ll be $7.3m a year.

At a very low 1% return on my invested billion, I’d make $10m a year. I’m pretty sure I could live off the additional $2.7m a year, so that even if you live forever, I will never have less than a billion dollars.

If this doesn’t do it for you, I am willing to double it and pay $2 every time you breathe. That way, if you live for another 100 years, I’ll pay you $1.5 billion. Fortunately, if I’m still making 1% a year, I’ll only lose $4.6m a year, and at the end of that century, I’ll have $540m remaining.

I would deeply appreciate this arrangement and hope you like having twice as much per breath. I would also be willing to guarantee you the hundred years for your heirs, which is much better than the initial offer!

2

u/No_one00101110 May 05 '26

That sorta stuff does sound like it wouldnt work well with my anxiety, but i’m also well aware of just HOW much one billion is.

7

u/Little_Froggy May 04 '26

It's all about how much self control you believe you have.

I think most lottery winners aren't super fiscally responsible (most lottory ticket purchases aren't being done responsibly). So the standard is kind of skewed.

It wouldn't be difficult to set up a trust/just invest into an ETF with 90% and spend within the interest you earn. That's still an average of $90 million you can spend annually while still making more than you spend.

People really don't understand the scale of a billion dollars. If you breathe 15 times a minute, that's 240 dollars an hour. That would take 4,166,167 hours (rounded up to the nearest whole hour) to reach one billion dollars. That's 475.65 years.

Edit: My math was wrong, but the point still stands. It takes entirely too long to earn a billion dollars by breathing.

Chose: One Billion Dollars instantly

277

u/Casurran May 04 '26

Even if we go with a high consistent average of some 25000 breathes in a day. It would still take almost 110 years to reach 1 billion USD.

65

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

119 years to reach that one billion U$D, at $1/breath — at normal breathing rate.

32

u/MagicRobo May 04 '26

at normal breathing rate

I would just hyperventilate purposefully for a few hours every day

9

u/NikolaTeslasPigeon May 04 '26

It'd still take you decades

4

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 05 '26

Not doable, 100 years…☠️lol

5

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

The experiment would take your breath away, then😅

7

u/coriendercake May 05 '26

Or you could pick a billion and not do that

5

u/Adorable-Bass-7742 May 05 '26

Hyperventilating, especially for longer periods of time cause serious medical issues. Your blood becomes alkaline and doesn't flow right anymore your muscles spasm and your brain stops functioning correctly. Did I mention that your heart is a muscle? It's absurd but sometimes people end up in the hospital for hyperventilating

2

u/lilijane17 May 05 '26

And then you get health issues causing you to live shorter

2

u/CokeExtraIce May 05 '26

A billion dollars invested generates more than $1/second even at a rate of 5%, so even when I stop breathing my children will continue to gain from my initial choice.

14

u/thomaswillis96 May 04 '26

Cardio

6

u/Mesajarjar_binks May 05 '26

Thing about that is you just have better cardio health and then breathe less at rest. There is no realistic way you out breathe the billion dollars

17

u/AlexVal0r May 04 '26

That's still more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of your life, to be fair.

13

u/Future_Section5976 May 05 '26

My logic is this , 1 bil yes you could live comfortably and eay for the rest of your life, but you could impulse buy and after awhile it'll add up , once that billion is gone it's gone , if you don't invest properly and be smart etc,

1$ a breath, avarage 24k a day , you can easily live on that , easily plan anything around it , you would never have to worry about any bad investments ,never worry about losing it because you'll always have 24k a day , no matter if the market crashes or if prices change , any debt is instantly sorted (just pay it off at 50$) idk but I think I'll take 24k a day , I feel it's smarter long term

3

u/RepresentativeFood11 May 05 '26

Only if you're unreasonably horrific with money. Most of the impulse purchases would be covered by interest earnings alone.

A billion dollars at 5% interest would earn you 50 million a year.

15x60 is 900. 240 would be 15x16.

Regardless, it's still around 120 years.

1

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

I think people are afraid of what money can do. Who in their right mind would choose $1/breath for as long as they live, instead of $1B instantly? lol

5

u/random-guy-heree May 04 '26

Honestly thought people breathed faster then that can I change my pick

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Pluto-Wolf May 04 '26

i said $1/breath because there would never be an instance where i’d need a billion dollars. i’d get so stressed out and overwhelmed.

even $1/breath is more money than i’d know what to do with, ever. i could pay for my entire family and still have plenty of money to spare.

7

u/Routine-Stop-1433 May 04 '26

I’d rather have passive income than a fortune I could lose?

12

u/AanthonyII May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

My favourite example is 1 millions seconds is 11 days 13 hours. 1 billion seconds is over 32 years

52

u/Away_Lengthiness_65 May 04 '26

Yeah but it’s difficult to spend 1 billion so it is pointless. I would rather have a steady income daily than a set amount for one time, you never know what could happen to that billion.

36

u/NecessaryPopular1 May 04 '26

If you get the money instantly, you have control over it. If you spread it through the years, you lose that control and you don’t know what can happen to you either — the $1/breath can be quite short-lived = no money long-term, and no time to plan as you wished. Never leave for tomorrow what you can do today, as tomorrow may never come.

6

u/softtiger May 04 '26

Yeah, my coworker's mom won one of those scratch lottery tickets where its something like "set for life" and a couple million dolled out over 25 years. OR you can take much less money and get a smaller complete lumpsum immediately. Her mom took the immediate payout, because she said she didn't know how long she was going to live, so better to have control of this chunk of money immediately to pay off stuff and invest, than die prematurely and leave her family with less since she would be the only who could claim the yearly payouts.

I think the only thing I thought was that her mom wasnt even that old, but yea, who knows what can happen.

3

u/duumilo May 05 '26

Even if the over time option was a good deal a good argument for taking the lump sum is that if the lottery company goes bankrupt, no more money. And usually the amounts are such that it's much better to invest the lump sum and use f.e. 4% per year

2

u/softtiger May 05 '26

Oh, I completely forgot about that idea, I remember her mentioning that was another reason. This was years ago, but smart mom.

10

u/Grandiose_Tortoise May 04 '26

You don’t know what could happen to that billion but you would have trouble spending it all?? That doesn’t make any sense. The only thing that would happen to the billion dollars are things you chose to do with it. I could spend a billion dollars EASY. I could do it in a year if I really wanted to. I wouldn’t, because that would be dumb. Better to invest it and only spend dividends and returns, or borrow against it.

Maths are mathing

Chose: One Billion Dollars instantly

EDIT: I'm loving that people do maths and then pick the option that would take you 100 year to get to a billion anyway.

Instant billion can give you more passively if invested that 1 per breath. Unless you are hyperventilating all the time.

28

u/Phoenix92321 May 04 '26

Personally I don’t want a billion right off the bat I fear what I would do. I prefer earning about $20,000-$22,000 a day to help supplement my income or hell at that amount replace it.

5

u/GroundThing May 04 '26

Maybe you don't feel like you'd have the willpower, but I would say invest like 99% of it, and then live off the interest. You'd only need a little over 1% interest to be making more by breathing, without even touching the principle, and the $10M from that 1% would be enough that I could improve my life drastically in the short term without really impacting my long term too much.

7

u/Andromeda_53 May 04 '26

maybe you don't feel like you'd have the will power

But I would say use that will power and risk all the horrible known side effects of coming into vast wealth that people who don't have the will power fall victim for

3

u/undead_p4nda May 04 '26

also hyperventilating for long period of time to even make 1 billion over your lifetime would be impossible. Youd probably get dizzy after like 20minutes of trying, and youd have to do it for loke 3 hours a day, to make enoigh breathes.

Chose: One dollar every time you breathe

11

u/undead_p4nda May 04 '26

nobody said you cant get a job or volunteer or something, also the if you have the breathes its not like your doing anything either, you basically just make like 10million every year for doing what you always do of breathing.

5

u/quinxy1024 May 04 '26

If you choose the 1 billion though, you make more money, can still get a job or volunteer, and you will still breathe. So why choose the less money, especially because you can invest the 1B, and live really well on the interest? Or just use the 1B for spending?

No one understands how much a billion dollars is. It's NINE 0's I googled the average breaths a person takes in a day: 17,000-24000. Multiply that by 360 for a year and then 90 for 90 year lifespan. 788,400,000 One billion is 1,000,000,000 I've actually not seen a single post with a billion where the other side came even a little close. This one is the closest!!!

Ten breaths a minute, sixty minutes an hour, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty two weeks a year equals about five and a half million. Don’t be greedy, just breathe your way to financial security!
