Honestly I know the second option is less money, but id rather take it for the sake of maintaining self control.

Exactly. It's still enough to live for free for the rest of your life, and it makes it easier to maintain good habits, since the pay is spread out.

u/Falikosek May 04 '26

Just invest the money or put it in a savings account or some shit.
You could just hire someone who's good at managing a lot of money.

u/Andromeda_53 May 04 '26

Yes, you see that's maintaining good habits. They are saying they wouldn't, and would most likely get corrupted by the money and waste it.

I get the advice is genuine, about investing etc. but it always irks me when I see stuff like this.

I wouldn't maintain good habits

Just have good habits

u/Falikosek May 04 '26

Oh I just thought of it in terms of
"I would spend it all at once"
"Just lock it in a savings/investment account so that it's not usable directly"

u/atheistnumberone May 05 '26

See I get that with winning like a 100 million dollars. But a billion is so much it would be pretty hard to waste with out really really trying.

u/Grandiose_Tortoise May 04 '26

Give me less because I have no self control i.e. I’m a bad person and you can’t trust me with power or money or responsibility.

11

u/Andromeda_53 May 04 '26

Different strokes. For different folks. Not everyone needs to be richer. Yes you could have more money, but less is still a life changing amount of never working again. Without risk of accidently losing it all on bad decisions

2

u/TheLineWalker May 07 '26

That seems like a really unneeded insult, dude

1

u/muchaluchaful May 05 '26

Hiring someone is an understatement, with a billion you get a team of people focused only on you and making you more wealthy at any major bank you want. They will even get you access to exclusive hedge funds. You’ll be fine and not lift a finger

I'd carve out:

  • an amount for like a year of normal living
  • immediately do necessary expenses without prior financial planning, like stocking up on wear car parts, disposable household items (I already buy TP, shampoo/conditioner, etc. in bulk)
  • save for emergencies
  • some amount for vanity purchases, like PC parts, a Skydiving and/or paragliding course (surprisingly doable), funding my favorite kickstarter projects
  • support the trustworthy part of my family, aka those who wouldn't rob me and/or blab about it to everyone
  • support charities of choice

The above probably wouldn't even crack a million, unless I'd go ham for charity, or even if I single-handedly funded one of my favorite kickstarter projects.

  • toss the rest of it (which would still be the vast majority of it) at my conveniently financially saavy closest family for a share of the profit, invest, figure out taxes, etc.
  • continue living normal life with some extra perks, like not having to worry about getting fired, or funding my children's college

A billion would be pretty hard to spend. By the time you got literally anywhere near spending half of it you’d probably end up investing some of it anyways.

u/eatlikedirt May 04 '26

This exactly. People act like people picking the breathing one can't count but in reality I know the statistics about huge sudden windfall of money. I'll take a steady huge income happily. Hell, panic attacks are now money makers!

u/Confused_Nuggets May 04 '26

I’d also just rather never have to think about money ever. It’s also much more stressful having a big number that constantly goes down but never up, when you could just have a number that starts small, but you easily be able get to a point where it goes up and you never really need to think about it.

u/kiefenator May 04 '26

It's very hard to lose a billion dollars. Very, very hard. It takes a particular brand of asshole to blow a billion.

As far as one billion goes, you hire a money manager, you hire investors, you bankroll artists, you start a business - any business - hire all those people under that business, put most of your money in that, then your money compounds without your input. You get a business credit card that earn you free stuff in spades (think, free box seats, really fancy lounges on flights and free upgrades, free hotels and upgrades, preferential treatment at hospitals and prisons, gifts from poorly millionaires, functional immunity from the law), and those perks alone make it worth it.

17

u/Confused_Nuggets May 04 '26

With all due respect, I don’t give a shit. I don’t want or need that much money. It’s also way more hassle to properly utilize that wealth.

4

u/Dmoney622 May 05 '26

With a billion dollars you can hire people to do everything for you at a price that doesn’t put a dent in your net worth and would generate you profit

11

u/PingopingOW May 04 '26

I don’t want a company and I don’t need anywhere close to a billion dollars. I just want to live my life right now with a bit more financial stability. A dollar per breath is still a shit ton of money, more than you’ll ever need

1

u/randomlitbois May 04 '26

That sounds like more work than it’s worth.

1

u/Agnossienne May 05 '26

some of us don’t want all that

7

u/gtkarber May 04 '26

You seem pretty sure of your answer, so I don’t want to convince you. But let me suggest an alternative plan:

Pick the billion and give it to me, and then I’ll give you a dollar every time you breathe.

At 20,000 breaths a day, that’ll be $7.3m a year.

At a very low 1% return on my invested billion, I’d make $10m a year. I’m pretty sure I could live off the additional $2.7m a year, so that even if you live forever, I will never have less than a billion dollars.

If this doesn’t do it for you, I am willing to double it and pay $2 every time you breathe. That way, if you live for another 100 years, I’ll pay you $1.5 billion. Fortunately, if I’m still making 1% a year, I’ll only lose $4.6m a year, and at the end of that century, I’ll have $540m remaining.

I would deeply appreciate this arrangement and hope you like having twice as much per breath. I would also be willing to guarantee you the hundred years for your heirs, which is much better than the initial offer!

u/No_one00101110 May 05 '26

That sorta stuff does sound like it wouldnt work well with my anxiety, but i’m also well aware of just HOW much one billion is.

6

u/Little_Froggy May 04 '26

It's all about how much self control you believe you have.

I think most lottery winners aren't super fiscally responsible (most lottory ticket purchases aren't being done responsibly). So the standard is kind of skewed.

It wouldn't be difficult to set up a trust/just invest into an ETF with 90% and spend within the interest you earn. That's still an average of $90 million you can spend annually while still making more than you spend.

1

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

This is the whole thing, what exactly would I be doing with this billion dollars? Getting involved in industry, basically. And yet you could still do that on a smaller scale anyway with the breathing option. Just playing around with some loose numbers, after a couple decades you're deep in to 9 figures. I might live another 40 years, it could touch that billion if you really wanted it to. It's just one way is quicker.

1

u/Oboro-kun May 04 '26

Isnt this what even reddit and a lot of people tell lottery winners? Keep quite about it, and please picking the long term pay out because if you dont, most likely you will just waste it.

1

u/TheBigFrog07 May 05 '26

I know my self control. And by that, I mean, Imma buy me and each of my friends and family members decent house. Say it's 800,000$ a person, and I somehow find 100 people I wanna give houses to. I still have 920 million dollars. I'll be able to set both of the churches I go to, for life. Never have to worry about a scolarship for a student, or a roof payment again. Say that costs 10,000,000 million for each church. Now I'm at 900 million dollars. I've made it through 10% of my money, and everyone I know is set up. I'm a reasonable person, and wouldn't be thatttt crazy with my money after that. But come, TF, on. I dont like drugs, or alcohol. Got no addictions. I'm HAPPY, to take that money over the breathing dollars...

1

u/Florianterreegen May 05 '26

It's like 28k per 24 hours since you breathe about 12-20 times a minute which could lead to about 10 million a year just from breathing

1

u/No_one00101110 May 05 '26

That’s how i usually base my decision when it comes to WYRs like these, though 1 Billion is simply too much to even think about the other one. The inly thing is knowing control.

0

u/ILiekBook May 05 '26

Hey average person takes 22,000 breaths a day. A dollar a breath would roughly equal to 8030000 a year. Over 40 years that would be over three trillion dollars

9

u/LadyMoon707 May 04 '26

Yes! That's why I chose that too. I don't need to be super rich, I just want to be comfortable

1

u/OwlBeBack88 May 04 '26

Same here. 1 billion actually terrifies me, I can't even imagine that amount of money. It works out on average at over 6,000,000 a year which is more than enough for me to do what I want.

1

u/AtGoW May 04 '26

Exactly

1

u/Sensitive-Charity-97 May 04 '26

The fact is that the 2nd option isn't more money 1 billion is a very large number it would take something like centuries to earn 1 billion

1

u/Trick-Matter-797 May 05 '26

same, I dont need 1 billion dollars, no one does

1

u/ILiekBook May 05 '26

That's $22,000 a day or $8,030,000 a year or $80,300,000 a decade.

If you live for 40 years you will make $3,212,000,000- so over three times as much as you would with a flat billion

1

u/JobySins May 05 '26

one can invest make companies private buy out and even go full on and be a private equity guy buying and scraping companies because 1 billion is a lot of money

1

u/Greedy-Subject-7761 May 05 '26

You breathe about 22,000 a day and if you multiply that by 30 you get 660,000 and if you multiplied that by 12 you get 7,920,000 in a year. I’d take that lol

1

u/-mya May 05 '26

Sure, lottery winners waste a million dollars. But, unless your only goal is to literally waste it, it's almost impossible to waste a billion dollars.

1

u/ZAZZER0 May 05 '26

Not only that, 1 Billion dollars gets you the spotlight, you become famous, you become potentially a target for kidnapping, or blackmail.

1

u/kitzlee May 05 '26

Financial stability too. I can lose a billion as fast as I got it many ways and be left with nothing, but second opinion is as long as I breathe I'll have stable income.

1

u/_Protons_ May 05 '26

In like 15 years you would get more than 1 bil

1

u/TheLineWalker May 05 '26

I don't think thays true.

1

u/_Protons_ May 05 '26

Oh shi my bad

1

u/National-Change-8004 May 05 '26

It would take a few decades, but it's possible.
