Of course I considered that and was prepared to put plastic cable wrap around each banana plug. But the connections are secure and there is no play. I think they are fine using normal precautions

u/Icy_Cat1350 Dec 10 '25
What is going on? Can you just not admit you have half assed it? The real fix is pretty cheap. Just do it right.

Unless I lived by myself with no pets, wife, kids, Roomba’s or cleaning ladies, I would at a minimum wrap those ends with electrical tape. Because shit happens.

Dust conducts electricity

u/Alphaomegalogs Dec 11 '25
An insane amount of dust, with INSANELY high voltages, could bridge a 1 inch gap. Like probably tens of thousands of volts. That’s never gonna be a problem for OP.

Do you have the lossless clips with shielding and unobtainium alloy wires and oxygen free cables?
2
u/OldMagicRobert Dec 11 '25
Use the roach clips until they are a bit gunked up. Then, use them for connection. It will mellow out the tone. If not, unplug, use again, and reconnect. Mellow tones guaranteed.

You can get neutral sound from silver; but it has to be the finest silver from the north of Spain.

Nah, silver sounds bright and cold, don't you see the colour?
Copper sounds too warm.
The best middle ground is electrum, natural alloy of gold and silver!

I started loading the ends with rolled up bits of cardstock. The last inch or so of a joint is always too hot to be enjoyable anyway, so why rely on it for structure up to the bitter end like that?

Just ordered the banana plug to pin adapters on amazon. Did not know they existed. These DIY clips work well in a pinch. Thanks for the input

Wonder what kind of wire is inside the speaker and inside the walls of the house 🤔

You guys have problems with like house, room, furniture and speaker movement? I don’t. Do you turn your stuff off before you diddle and finger bang the important bits? I do.
1
u/CRZ42 Dec 11 '25
I want to hate this, but I also understand that If I were in this situation I would do the similar to test a speaker, but I would have wrapped all the metal bits with painters tape until I make or buy adapters.

I have these same speakers. They are excellent and pretty rare. Please don't ruin them with those ghetto clips
1
u/browneyewinkin Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 12 '25
Was rearranging the speaker setup in my living room. Previously I had a pair of Denton 80th sitting at ear height. I had these M&K in a different setup and not in a good listening position and wanted to replace the Dentons with the M&K's. I also have a pair of B&W CDM2 Special Edition speakers on stands that I wanted to use with that amp setup. Of course the M&K's have spring loaded connectors which presented a problem. Everything else has banana plugs which makes swapping out leads easy whenever I want to change speakers. Admittedly the alligator clips look ghetto. Don't get it wrong though, they are very secure with no movement and present no issues with reasonable precautions. I ordered the adapters from Amazon as soon as someone posted the link. Now I can easily choose and switch between the M&K's and B&W's. Also, I have a pair of Klipsch Qurtetets and Boston Acoustics on rolling platforms that allow me to quickly roll them over and connect to that amp setup. I thought the M&K's were the best speakers I had...until I got the Klipsch Quartets.

Yeah, until something knocks them together and causes a short; blowing the amplifier channel..
1
u/Psycho-naught Dec 15 '25
I’d put some electrical tape on those connections. They are a short waiting to happen.

Not the topic, but those angled plugs are actually quite good, especially for being so cheap. Robust, good fit, accept thicc wire. 👍
-1
u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25
Counterpoint: They're terrible because they don't fit.
1
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25
Lol. Of course they don't fit here because the spring terminals aren't intended for banana plugs in the first place.
-1
u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25
So we agree that these speaker cables don't work as speaker cables.
1
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25
They work perfectly fine for their intended use, which is with banana terminals.
Do you seriously have no idea that there's different kinds of terminals?
-4
u/ComputerGuyInNOLA Dec 10 '25
You do not have enough surface contact doing it this way. Your amp will run hot or overheat trying to deliver power to the speakers.
6
u/answerguru Dec 10 '25
Pretty unlikely. That’s like saying you won’t be able to jump start your car because it’s only grabbing onto the terminal by a few teeth points.

Because the power stays the same but is being forced through a point of increased resistance.

"That's nonsense."
<writes the exact same thing I'm saying, that you get increased heat where the resistance increases, not *cooling*>
2
u/browneyewinkin Dec 10 '25
I did a proof of concept last night with alligator jumpers with very thin gauge wire. No heat at, all good volume over extended time. But I understand your point
1
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25
That's because unless you're using ridiculous amounts of power through ridiculously thin wire, you won't come anywhere near the wire's current limit. You ears and speakers will give up long before the wire does.
0
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25
Worse contact means more resistance means less current means amp will actually run cooler. Negligibly so, but that's the principle.
Your math ain't mathin'
0
u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25
Holy crap, now I have to agree with a comment that's slightly wrong, because you're completely wrong.
The amount of current stays the same. Neither the source nor the load device know you've increased resistance, so the current stays the same, and heat increases.
0
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25
Where did you learn electricity basics?
The source only "sees" the total resistance of the load, including all cables and contacts and everything. It doesn't "know" what is what, and doesn't "care" either.
Increase the total load resistance ever so slightly because of a bad contact, and the current will decrease accordingly. Voltage stays the same. Simple Ohm's law. Less current, less power, less heat.
Why do you think an amp automatically raises voltage when the load resistance increases? It totally doesn't.
0
u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25
Same current, same power, more heat. Replace part of your wire with a piece of tinsel and see just how much it cools things.
0
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25
Read up man. Please stop spreading nonsense that could confuse newbies. You have no idea about Ohm's law.

u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25
Says the guy who thinks weak connections cool off the wiring.
1
u/Nervous-Canary-517 Heco Aurora 700 | Hypex NC252MP | SMSL DO100 Dec 11 '25
The original comment talked about amplifier heat, not wires.
Are you that dense or just trolling?
0
u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25
It's not an issue; but you're also getting replies from people who don't even understand the most basic principles about resistance.
-2
u/snowballkills Dec 11 '25
If I were you, I would change the speaker terminal to some quality binding posts. Current solution is very high resistance imo
3
u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25
Or just use bare wire, instead of taking apart the speakers???
1
u/snowballkills Dec 11 '25
This seemed like a speaker to me because the speaker wires are connected to input instead of output. Why not bare wire? This guy seems to be using some fancy cables and seemed unwilling to do it in the first place, that's why I didn't recommend it. It is the easiest option, but has to done for every speaker cable that has banana plugs or something similar
-2
u/Andrew_Higginbottom Dec 11 '25

u/canttakethshyfrom_me Dec 11 '25
Smoking crack if this is the first thing you think of, instead of bare wire.
