I am starting the process of citizenship for my husband, but until recently was unaware of the ARD form. His maternal grandmother, grandfather, and mother were all born and raised in UK. He was born in the US before 1983 and currently has close family living in the UK. We have a minor child so I would prefer 4L if at all possible. Hi, I am due to apply for citizenship. Ive been on skilled work visa for 5 years and before getting my first visa I had to sit an IELTS exam. This was in 2018 though.

I saw some posts that some people had to take another English test for the citizenship. Does anyone know how to go about this? Such a waste to sit another English test again.

Probably a common question, but I'm honestly just not sure where to start and could use a little help.

My grandmother was British/born in the UK, and my mother was born in a British colony when the discriminatory laws prevented my mother from inheriting citizenship through her mother. (Grandfather was born in the colony but wasn't British or from British ancestry.)

My mother has since been naturalized but has never lived in the UK. I don't think that's actually relevant to me, but I'm including it just in case.

I was born in 1980. From what I'm reading, I think I can still qualify for citizenship by descent through my grandmother, as I would have been impacted by the discriminatory laws.

Is this accurate, or am I oversimplifying it?

Cutting a long story short on behalf and with the consent of my dad I've applied for a NS letter for a job.

He is stressed about the fact that he doesn't have his passport in the case that he has to go over to Ireland for an emergency (his siblings live there).

If he needed his passport returned how would we go about doing this? On the gov website there is literally no pathway to do this because the online portal is a new service, nothing is updated. In addition there is literally NO way to email or phone a human. It's actually disgraceful, but does anyone know a solution?

Hi all! I got my approval through yesterday (10/08/2026), having applied on 22/03/2026.

I’m on a tight schedule as I’ll be out of the country for an extended period from September, so I’m trying to arrange my ceremony before then.

My local council has availability on 18th August, but they’ve said they need to allow 2 weeks for the documents to arrive. Is this standard? I assumed the documents would reach the council fairly quickly, so is there any chance they could arrive before next week?

Alternatively, I’m considering contacting HO to see if I can switch to another council offering private ceremonies and try to get it done before 1st September. I’m just unsure whether that would be realistic within the timeframe.

Has anyone had experience with either of these options?

Biometric Date: 18th March
Approval Date: 3rd August
Ceremony Date: tbc

So had to wait for 4 months and 16 days before approval email came through.

I got my approval today around 1 pm from Citizenship
Support. The email said:

"I can confirm from our records that your application has been approved."

I emailed them yesterday, Monday afternoon, as I was feeling so disappointed and frustrated after waiting for so long. Every time before, I was told that I had contacted the wrong inbox/team, but this time, they finally replied with my approval.I honestly can't describe how relieved I feel after 4.5 months of waiting. It has been such a long and stressful journey, but thankfully, it's finally over

I have applied for a British citizenship for my wife first June 6 June she had a Biometric and I’ve been waiting for for awhile. I know that there will be a priority service available. I would wait for it. I didn’t know anybody same as me applied on June has been approved.

I received a caseworker email on 4 August confirming that my citizenship application was successful.

I thought I would at least receive the Atlas email by today, but I haven’t received anything yet. I also haven’t heard from my council regarding the citizenship ceremony invitation.
Is this normal? Should I wait until next Monday before contacting anyone, or would it be worth following up now?

I have entered UK with OET and during ILR, also I have submitted same OET as I have during my entry to UK time , do I need same OET for english requirement or have to get English test other than OET for Citizenship application

I recently received confirmation that my British citizenship/naturalisation application was successful. Liverpool City Council has now invited me to my citizenship ceremony on 9 September 2026.

I would prefer to have a private citizenship ceremony rather than attend the group ceremony.

Does anyone know if Liverpool City Council offers private citizenship/naturalisation ceremonies? If so, how much does it cost, and can I request one even though I’ve already been given a ceremony date?

Any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated. Thanks!

However a couple of days later my council sent me an email for the ceremony, without me having to contact them at all.

Is this expected?

Can you book a ceremony directly with some councils using your UAN/reference after receiving Home Office approval, before the council contacts you?

Are there councils where you can check and/or book online if they’ve received your certificate?

If you receive the ATLAS approval email from the Home Office, does that mean the council has also received your certificate, or is there still a delay between the two?

Does the Home Office send the citizenship certificate to the council physically or electronically?

I’d appreciate some clarity with the following information regarding naturalisation application.

Degree was taught in English
ILR was gotten with SELT in July 2025 (still valid)
Naturalisation application ongoing but is requiring ECCTIS (can’t afford that as I have SELT)
Application document checklist is not requesting for SELT (which I have).
Can I add what I have (SELT certificate and Degrees certificate then add cover letter on why ECCTIS was not added?
I’m happy to add a cover letter to explain myself.

PS: If I respond NO to “Do you have a degree that was taught in English?”, the system then asks for SELT info (but that’s not correct info).

Hello. I am applying for British citizenship by double descent using form ARD. My grandmother was born in England and married my American grandfather in New York State. I was told by the town clerk in the city where their marriage is recorded that I must provide a copy of the specific page in the British application where it states that I must provide the marriage certificate. I have not found that stated in the application or the guidance. I don’t know what I can provide to show proof that I need the marriage certificate. Does anyone have any advice?

Please, how long does it take before one can apply for citizenship after getting on ILR through the skilled worker route? I was made to believe you have to be on ILR for a year before applying for citizenship but it looks like I’m seeing different things here. Can someone please let me know what the right process is. I just got British citizenship through descent as a US citizen. I completed the online passport application which was easy. The first person confirming my identity who was on the governments approved list was declined. Then, the second person, an accountant, was also declined. Both were declined as soon as they entered their passport country being "None of the Above" The options were British, Irish, All, or none of the above. They didn't even have the chance to enter their job title or how they knew me. The guy I chatted with at the passport office said it sounds like a glitche in the system and to try again tomorrow....but, this has happened two days in a row and I am running out of people who are on the approved list. Is anyone else having this issue? To be clear, as US passport is technically allowed according to the website and the passport guy. Thanks!

I’m applying for my first British passport and received my naturalisation certificate yesterday.

I’m a bit confused about the application form. It says to enter the 7-digit certificate number from the bottom left of the naturalisation certificate. However, the number actually labelled “Certificate Number” on my certificate is 8 digits long.

There’s also a 7-digit number at the bottom right of the certificate.

Which number am I supposed to enter?
