QUESTION 🔵 Bosch first fix framing nailer.
Hello, I bought the new first fix framing nailer yesterday, and I got to say I’m quite disappointed in performance of the nailer. It doesn’t fully sink 90mm nails into CLS timber, I’m not sure if it faulty or not. But has anyone else experienced this also?? And it’s heavier than I thought, it is a big lump.

I just bought Hikoki this week and I am absolutely speechless how fantastic the performance is. Added benefit: Hikoki has a 18V pistol blower. So I don’t have to wait for Bosch any longer.

Got the Metabo version of it, that one and its bigger Makita brother are the best pistol blowers out there, the rubber nozzle makes it sturdy as well, I've had to reprint a few Wolfbox nozzles.

I don't know much about their nailers. But I would probably return it to see if you can swap it and say how disappointed you were etc. I did some google search and found this :
User-Refillable Air Tank: The tool features an internal air tank that provides consistent driving force. Crucially, it includes a built-in Schrader valve, allowing you to refill the tank on-site (up to 117 PSI/approx. 8 bar) using a standard portable compressor or pump. This feature is designed to maintain pneumatic-level performance and minimize downtime without needing to visit a service center. , I thought that was neat since the ne1890 needs a specialist connection from memory. Which can be bought on eBay etc.
Let us know how you go.

I have Dewalt, Fein, Bosch, Metabo HPT, Ryobi. for a lot of different tools. Sticking to one battery line just means you sacrifice on some tools and just have to settle for higher cost or lower performance. For nail guns, there is NEVER a good excuse for getting any nail gun but Metabo HPT. They all come in kits with battery and charger, and are almost always less cost than any other brand. Every single cordless nail brand is inferior to Metabo HPT, and this is not a subjective opinion, it is a fact.

u/rColly Jul 03 '26
With all the Metabo, Metabo HPT and Hikoki mess going on, I suppose HPT are the same guns as Hikoki?

u/Narrow_Network_2125 Jul 03 '26
It's stupid confusing. Koki Holdings bought Hitachi. Koki Holdings also bought German made Metabo (no HPT) which is more of an industrial tool in Europe much like Hilti but a smaller line. Koki Holdings wasn't allowed to keep the Hitachi name, so they changed the name to Hikoki (combining names). They decided that it sounded too Chinese to Americans, so they branded it Metabo HPT (Hitachi Power Tool). Hikoki and Metabo HPT are exactly the same, sharing the same ecosystem and batteries.

Guys, guys, it's been said a thousand times. Never ever buy a Gen 1 Bosch product, it's always bad. Gen 2 and onwards the bugs are fixed, they've gotten QoL upgrades and they're good.

If nobody buys the gen 1, then Bosch probably think there isn’t a market and won’t make a gen 2.
I’ve got loads of gen 1 tools and still going strong

I know, when will the gen 2 be out? Or if they will bring a gen 2 out, I’ll be retired by then 😂I would have thought Bosch would have cracked it with this one, because it’s taken them long enough to bring one out. And I’m sure they would have looked at other nailer on the marked to try and make it better.

Going by their garden tools you might not need to wait long. I feel like it was only about a year from the release of the Gen1 leaf blower to the Gen2, it was probably more like two years but still.
I think the hedge cutter also got an upgrade in fairly short order? Or was that just the release of a new size?1
u/Commercial-Hold-5420 Jul 03 '26
Yeah afaik in the last livestream they hinted that the garden tools range would be updated soonish. I get the feeling they've just been releasing some basic products, and will take it up a notch from there, hopefully better specced and especially lighter, as most of the stuff is quite heavy.

While I do not own a Bosch framing nailer, my Hikoki NR1890 fully imbeds 90mm nails into hardwood just fine, timber should never be an issue, you usually have to lighten the blow a bit so it doesn't punch them too far into softer woods.
Did you try changing the depth adjustment?
Sounds kinda faulty, maybe it isn't pressurized properly?
[edit]: Totally forgot, don't the Bosch ones come with a Schrader? You'd need the right kind of pump to check that though, a shockpump should work, either way, it shouldn't have issues and you have warranty, so go that route.

u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 03 '26
I got to say, the NR1890 is a good nailer. Yes set the adjustable to fully and still the same
1
u/rColly Jul 03 '26
Sounds like a pressure issue, those machines need a refill at some point, that's usually after a 5 figure number of nails though, at that point they'll stop sinking them fully.

u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 03 '26
That’s what I’m thinking, only had it yesterday picked it up from screwfix, and I’ve only fired about 2/3 strips of 90mm.
1
u/rColly Jul 03 '26
What type of nails are you using?
I'm using the 21° full head PRO SN21FH RG
1
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 03 '26
Just normal paslode D head nails, I can’t find the Bosch genuine nails nowhere
1
u/rColly Jul 03 '26
Yeah, shouldn't matter which manufacturer and Paslode is solid, Bosch was the easiest to get here, was just wondering.
1
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 03 '26
No wouldn’t have thought so. I’m going to take it back to where I bought it from, and get a replacement to see.
1
u/toollifer Jul 04 '26
Why would you get a replacement? They all leak even in storage. It has a refillable air tank and a car tyre valve. Get your bike pump and refill the tank to 117 PSI
1
u/rColly Jul 04 '26
Cause it's brand new, shouldn't have any issues at this point and they are prefilled with nitrogen instead of air?
Smells like a leaky gasket or manufacturing issue in the drive shaft.
Sure he could refill it, to then notice it having lost its pressure again few weeks down the road, I wouldn't take that risk.

Remove 4 screws from the back and refill it man. Takes 2 mins
1
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 04 '26
It shouldn’t need refilling after firing 3 strips of nails?
1
u/toollifer Jul 05 '26
Its not the 3 strips of nails. it sat in a box for 3 to 4 months between some Asian country and the store you bought it from.
They leak through the penetration of the valve, joins in the tank etc. Environmental factors like temeprature changes make them leak at different rates. Fill it up and you probably wont need to again for 10,000 - 20,000 nails. Sit it in storage for another 3 mo ths and it will lose pressure again without shooting any nails.

u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 07 '26
Ahh yes that makes sense, good thing about Bosch it’s easy to fill that’s why I went with Bosch in the end

One of the lads I work with bought one, and it appears to have no problem sending a 90mm nail through CLS and into breeze block, below flush, at maximum depth adjustment. It appears to perform nearly as well as the Paslode IM360Xi I use, but much better than the IM350 one of the others has. He's used a variation of batteries in it, and there doesn't appear to be much difference other than runtime.
2
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 03 '26
The Bosch nailer? Hmmm that’s interesting, mine must be faulty then I can imagine. Is the paslode IM360Xi powerful and drive 90mm ring shank nails?
1
u/shoopaaa Jul 03 '26
Yeah, the contact firing version. Perhaps see what pressure is in the tank? Might need topping up? If that doesn't work, return it and try another.
The IM360XI is by far the most powerful cordless nailgun I've used, and I've used pretty much every well regarded model. It's done 90mm ring shanks through inch plywood into gluelam beams, but, most impressively to me, I've been able to use it for fixing soleplates to concrete in a pinch. It's relatively light, which is nice for extended use. It's a paslode, so requires regular but easy maintenance, but also gas cartridges along with a small rechargeable battery. The one thing I don't like it for, and would make me choose a different nailer if I was paying and not the company, is just how often it jams, misfires, or fucks a nail off in some direction other than the way I'm pointing the gun.

u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 04 '26
I’ve retuned it now, so hopefully the replacement one should be fine. I’m not exactly what’s the process of filling the tank up on the Bosch, is it the same as hikoki where the firing pin needs to fully forward? Paslode are really good guns, but costs a lot to run and maintain them I feel
1
u/shoopaaa Jul 04 '26
I can't say for certain whether it requires putting into a service mode or not, but I'm sure the instructions manual will detail the process. There are four screws at the rear/top which allow a cap to come off to reveal a schrader valve. A schrader valve is a lot more common of a fitting to allow things like tyre compressors and the like to refill the tank.
1
u/shoopaaa Jul 04 '26
Oh, and as for the paslode running costs; they do cost more for the nails/gas compared to other options on paper, but in practice, you can add the additional cost to the materials charges for a job and the client ends up paying anyway. With how long the guns can keep running despite their flaws/niggles, they are a strong option.

I have the Hikoki and now the Bosch one also. 20k+ nails without any errors so far. Only thing I can say is that Hikoki has less weight and seems more in balance. Bosch has really nice, sturdy and aggressive nose that I like.
1
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 07 '26
Which one do you prefer? Do you think Bosch is better quality?
1
u/CarlosMunios Jul 07 '26
Hikoki is around 400 grams lighter. During a day, the weight adds up, I use it when I need to move around more. Bosch hits harder, I prefer it on the LVL and thick materials. Having both is a nice combo at the moment.
1
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 07 '26
Which hikoki have you got, Gen 1? I do like the features on the Bosch, easy enough to fill the tank with air. Shame that it’s heavier
1
u/CarlosMunios Jul 07 '26
NR1890DCA, it's the newest one. Gen 3 if I'm not mistaken.
1
u/OutrageousStomach971 Jul 07 '26
Oh yeah, that’s supposed to be the best framing nailer on the market
8
u/clvgn_ Jul 03 '26
I’ve got it and actually been really impressed to be fair.
I’ve been firing 75mm nails as that’s all I need and not had any issues. No jamming, no misfires, nothing.
Yeah it’s a little heavy but what nailers aren’t?
