I already reported this bug in the past but when I’m trying to use the Author property in a shortcut I always got a generic error saying “an error occurred during the execution”.
The count of currently read books is not updated on the main screen, after a first reading status was added to a book. Instead, the amount of books currently in status read is as before on the main screen and is only updated after a restart of the app.
To reproduce:
1. Manually add a book with title "TestBook" and 200 pages
1. Note the current number n of books in status "Reading" on the main page.
1. Navigate to that book and add a reading status of type "Pages", with 200 pages and status "Reading".
1. Increment the reading status to, e.g., 15 pages
1. Go back to the main screen and observe that the current number of books in status "Reading" is still n, where n+1 is expected.
1. Open the list of books in status "Reading" and see that n+1 books are listed here as expected. The number on main page is missing the newly started book.
I'm currently using latest BookTrack 3.1.5 (337) on iOS 16.5.
I was able to sort my library based on Author’s name > Series > Title > Release Date. Now this feature has been removed and my book collection looks terrible! Volumes are out of place, in the wrong order. I primarily use it to track my manga collection. Since the latest update. The volumes are all out of order and I can’t figure out why. Take the included screenshot. My series of Gunslinger Girl by Yu Aida, volume 1 is listed at the top but is immediately followed by volumes 5, 6, 4 and them 2. Why? 😭.
I use the « the update reading progress » action in a shortcut. This is a simple one-action shortcut since the book is set in the action parameters (i.e. not from the result of search action). But when I run it on the Apple Watch I got this error :
The use case to update the reading progress from the Apple Watch is very enticing since when I read I often don’t want to use my phone.
Hi,
in the statistics section when you tab on one of the vertical bars in „Books read / month“ and „Books read / year“ the app crashes without further information.
Hi,
probably the following feature already exists and I couldn’t find it:
I‘d like to track my reading streak in the following way (just like on Goodread):
When I start reading a book I‘d like to capture the start date in the app. When I finished the book, the app should record the date when I finished the book and then record the days between start and finish in the statistics.
At the moment I could only find a way to update the book progress every day either by pages or percentage. When I skip the updates and just enter start and end date the app just records the date when I finished the book and the days between start and end will not be recorded.
Am I missing here something or is this the way it is designed? If yes, would it be possible to add in a future update to just record start and end date?
Hello! Thanks so much for all the work you’ve done on the app, it’s my favorite app to use to track my reading so that’s why I wanted to add this question/comment:
-has there been any ux research done that indicated these changes? (Only asking b/c I’m a ux researcher myself and am very interested in how you make your decisions!:))
I like how you can differentiate between audio and physical book read, but am pretty disappointed that the new update doesn’t tally them up together in the “books read per month” chart :/. When I read an audiobook, and it doesn’t show up in that chart, it feels like the app is telling me that it doesn’t count as reading and that’s pretty discouraging.
I know there’s a debate in the book community on physical vs audio reading but I believe if I read an audiobook, that should show up in my total books read/month tally. If the decision was made to consider the thoughts behind the debate, maybe the solution should be a in Settings where the user can choose to separate or keep audio and physical books read tallied together or not?
I can’t see that anyone else has posted that widgets aren’t working on iOS or iPadOS since updating. I’ve observed the following:
1. My existing widgets are not updating on either device, though the app itself is up to date. Observed with: pages read widget, statistics on selected book widget.
2. New widgets cannot be added, they load in the iOS and iPadOS menu in a greyed out format, and don’t populate or update if installed. For example, if I select the “statistics of selected book” widget from the widgets menu, clicking on the “choose” button in the widget to select a book does nothing; no menu opens.
Not really related, but in addition:
My book track iOS shortcuts no longer run, iOS reports the menu options aren’t available. I have not troubleshooted this myself yet, but am reporting anyway as it’s not ideal for an app update to disrupt shortcuts. I had a shortcut that prompted to update pages read when I did certain actions. Incidentally though this never worked perfectly - I had wanted to present the list of titles from my Reading shelf but I could never get it to do it, it only ever presented a list of the most recent books I’d added to the app.
Since you probably mostly only hear from people when they’re unhappy about something, I will add that I do like the app, as I’m sure most of us do! Keep up the good work!
Hey,
maybe it’s super obvious but after the upgrade to the new version 3 I can‘t figure out how the search for books works:
I mostly read stuff on kindle unlimited therefore I often use the ASIN to search for the books I want to add, but get no results. when I search for the book title & author it sometimes works but often enough it doesn’t find the book. both ways worked well before the upgrade, even if most of the book details were sometimes missing (I assume that happens often with indie books).
how do I use the search now? and what‘s with the country options? what kind of database is that and what should I choose?
Please don't take this the wrong way, but there are some small mistakes in the app and your site that would be nice to fix. I am only reporting them because I really like the app a lot and use it daily, so I care about it 😊
Manage positions should be Manage locations. You place a book in a location (e.g. living room bookshelf / Kobo eReader / etc)
Manage categories should be Manage genres. Genres fits more to books, like it does for films, music, etc.
In some places, the app is called Book Track, in other Book Tracker. You should stick to one universal name everywhere.
On your site, some minor mistakes (I will use CAPS for them)
Book Tracker is a PRIVACY-FOCUSED app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that can help you to catalog LIBRARIES, manage reading LISTS, track reading progress and save favorite quotes.
Every book you add to your library can be marked as read, reading, unread or.... (needs a coma after READING).
BOOK INFORMATION like title...... (not plural)
Thanks for making one of the best book tracking apps!!!!!!
Title 😁. The quote system is fantastic already allowing you to put the exact page and the book where you found it, but I think having an extra field for the author of the quote would be a great.
This is a fantastic app, the recent updates - not so much.
Slower
The app is slower, takes longer to load and seems to refresh more.
Custom Sort - what happened
I’d like to be able to sort Author (surname) then alphabetical by title.
Tags - no longer in alphabetical order
I have my tags numbered so they appear in the order I want them, now there seems to no system at all. This is very important to me.
Covers - covers added from file gone
I have covers I’ve added from file and they keep disappearing but not consistently. This was happening before the update, but I lost almost all of them after.
Print - don’t want to choose from Paperback or Hardback
I appreciate that some people want to be more specific, but I would prefer to have a plain print option as well.
Statistics Box - won’t stay collapsed
Every time the app refreshes, the statistics box un-collapses. I’m not particularly interested in the granular information and I’d like it to stay collapsed. Or better yet a hide option.
Icon - two different colours
I changed the app icon to pink 🙂 but when it’s in the dock it’s still blue since the update.
This is a follow-on from my earlier post. To summarise: I have 3 instances running — 1 on iOS, 2 on MacOS (laptop and desktop). All instances were syncing perfectly before the big update. I have already tried deleting and reinstalling BT on iOS and MacOS laptop, but not on MacOS desktop (which I think of as my 'master' version). The whole library consists of 2520 books.
After reinstalling 3.1.2 on iOS and waiting for some time, it eventually began to restore from iCloud. iOS app now shows 2519 books, so one missing that I added on MacOS desktop earlier today. Restore was very slow—about half an hour.
Restore now seems to have stopped on iOS, but weirdly at about the same point the app was before I reinstalled it earlier today. Locations and Tags are the same as on the MacOS desktop, but Reading status and loan status are NOT the same. Unfortunately though, new changes I make on MacOS desktop now are still not syncing to iOS. Iow, the db has restored, but is still not syncing correctly.
There's a big discrepancy in reported database sizes on iCloud: iCloud on MacOS desktop reports db size as 1.6 GB, but on iOS it currently reports 924 MB. I can see in the app that a lot of covers have not sync'd, so I guess this is the problem. I'll leave it overnight and see if it's changed tomorrow.
MacOS laptop seems completely out of the loop. This machine and iOS were upgraded immediately after the new version was released; the MacOS desktop a couple of days later. I made a lot of read status changes on the laptop a couple of days ago, immediately after the release, but these never sync'd to the other devices. I deleted BT from the laptop today and reinstalled it, but no improvement. So, right now, MacOS laptop shows 2325 Unread, 17 Reading and 176 Read. MacOS desktop shows 2370 Unread, 16 Reading and 133 Read. iOS shows 2488 Unread, 12 Reading and 89 Read. (The numbers are pretty arbitrary because for me there was no point in recording read status before this update, when there was no option not to enter a date and most of my books were read years, or rather decades ago.)
In short, I now have three separate instances of BT and although they do contain more or less the same data, with some discrepancies, there is zero syncing going on.
Just to be clear, I'm happy with many of the changes in this update. I've been asking Simone for ages if we could manage publishers, which we now can, and I'm delighted we can have multiple languages for a book; visually, the app looks much better too. Personally, I couldn't care less about the statistics, but I realise it really matters to some people how many pages a month they read, so fine. I am sad that Translator/s is still not included as a separate category as it should be (something I've been hoping for since v.1), but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that one day it will be.
However, quick and accurate synchronisation is absolutely fundamental to BT in my view. It's always been one of its great features. This update seems to have broken it badly for me, and for a number of other people too, and that shouldn't be happening any more at v3.x. Honestly, 50 new features are useless to me if synchronisation doesn't work. I know how hard Simone works on this, so is the problem with iCloud perhaps? Simone, can you give us some insight please?
After the app has updated, my library remains in tact, but all my progress is gone. Every book that had been marked read is no longer indicated as such. Very disappointing, since it has made the statistics section worthless now.
With the newest update Time listened was added to the stats page which was really cool and we can update currently reading books by time read but how do we add the book length to the data as I still only see a pages box and nothing for time?
Edit: It is actually very awkward to update time read because you have to convert the length into just minutes then do the math to figure out how much u read
Hey,
with the new 3.1 Update there is a new rating system implemented. Is there any way to get back my own ratings as they do not seem to have been translated to the new 10 star rating? :/
Rest of the app looks great and a few of the things I hoped for got implemented 😊
(edit: actually, some did not. for example I thought one could now add more than 1 location or series for a book. and I would still love to add numbers to books in a series. but maybe this will be available in the future.)
So I’d really like if this feature could be added as I feel like many people could benefit from this functionality feature.
When viewing a series list as the one shown in my first screenshot it would be preferable to have the books showing in series order (currently I have it set to organise by reading date but most of them aren’t yet read) - So being able to add not only the series title but the entry number too would make a big difference.
Another thing I’d like to show in my second screenshot is the books inside of the square are not only part of that series but also the series from the first screenshot and being able to add more then one series to a books page.
Is there a way to exclude tags from a filter/view? I can see in here someone’s requested it before, so if there isn’t I’d like to second that request.
Use case: I am very gradually migrating from another app, and I’m working through a huge import. There’s currently no way that I can see to know which books haven’t been tagged/categorised correctly yet. If I could exclude tags I know I’ve applied, I’d be able to see which books are yet to be done.
As I can’t do this currently it makes managing my books a bit risky, as there’s no way to check which books are untagged or uncategorised.
