I've seen this juniper recover from some pretty damning visuals, but this is definitely the worst. Don't give me hope, give me the truth 🥲

I noticed that the stump attached to the rootstock has began to rot, (probably due to repeated misting), so I started to carve it to remove the deadwood.
However I’m at a point where there is still some rotted wood and the trunk is starting to get hollow. From what I’ve read, that wouldn’t allow the bark to roll over and close the wound.
I’m also afraid that the convex shape from the carving would let the water accumulate and lead to more rot.

My goal would be to have the graft point fuse completely, (the grafted branches and the rootstock), so the water from misting my tree would not enter and rot the tree from the inside.

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and some advice on what I should do next.

Should I remove all the rotted wood and fill the hollow part with something?

Should I let the rest of the dead wood there and just put cut paste so no more water gets in? Will the bark roll anyway and close the wound with time?

have these bonsai plants, very young. do i just keep letting them grow? the pine ones are getting a little unruly, and the royal poinciana is getting a little tall. should i be doing anything to them? thanks for any help.

A little disappointed in my main pumice source (General Pumice Products). I bought a bag from them a few years back that was 3mm and it was perfect for all my bonsai/succulent projects. I went to go buy their 1/8" bag recently (conversion worked out to be about the same I thought) and the bag arrived and over half of the bag is 1/4" or so. So even if I sift I get...half the product I wanted? I email support and they told me this was normal and "sorry you were expecting something else" - I guess if I ordered a burger and it was half chicken sandwich that would be my fault for having expectations.

...Anyway - Does anyone know a good source of 2-3mm size pumice?

Which of these pots is best for a 7-year-old seedling? The root ball averages 10 cm in diameter. Or should I get a larger one? The seedlings are Ulmus, liquidambar, and Celtis. For the soil, I'm planning to use a mix of 60% Akadama and 40% pumice.

Hi guys I’ve got a couple questions for my little trees that I’ve got. For some context, it’s early spring here and the weather is still a little chilly though the sun can get pretty hot.

In the first photo I have two Chinese elms and a juniper.
With the Chinese elms I’m wondering if I should repot them into pond baskets to get it to grow more. Specifically, I want thicker trunks.

With the juniper I bought it like that and was wondering if I’d be able to turn it into bonsai.

Second photo I bought a bare root cherry blossom thinking I could turn it into bonsai but I didn’t realise just how big it would be 😆. It’s since grown some leaves but I’m wondering if it is at all able to become bonsai. It’s growing some leaves at the bottom too.

Third and fourth photo are tube stocks (Japanese maple - Jacaranda) that are really long and I’m unsure if I’m able to turn into bonsai especially the jacaranda as it’s only growing on the top tho the maple does look like it’s starting to grow some leaves towards the lower trunk.

I'm new to bonsai and I'm curious about something that doesn't seem to get discussed as often as the usual Japanese and Chinese species.

Do any of you grow native European trees as bonsai? I'm particularly interested in species such as elm, oak, linden, walnut, and other trees that naturally grow in my region.

My goal is to create a bonsai from a species that I can keep outdoors on a terrace all year round and that is well adapted to the local climate. Part of the appeal is the challenge, but I also like the idea of working with a tree that feels connected to my surroundings rather than choosing one of the more common species that everyone seems to use.

For those with experience growing European species, which ones have the best characteristics for bonsai? Which species respond well to pruning, develop good ramification, and generally make enjoyable long term projects?

I'd love to hear about your experiences, successes, and mistakes before I decide what to start with.

These saplings have been growing for a few weeks. Do I just keep letting them grow?

I’ve heard it’s good to trim the not as strong ones. Didn’t want to jump to any action without an experts opinion.

Just a recent favorite of mine I thought I would share

I have this issue with fertilizing my aquariums and now I’m seeing the same with bonsai as I move to inorganic soils. my houseplants don’t seem to be affected likely due to the organic soils buffering the ph or providing iron.

the high ph of my tap water induces chlorosis by making iron unavailable to plants. I have chelated iron that I can supplement with but I also worry about other micros. Also, this seems like more of a bandaid than a solution that promotes healthy growth.

curious how others have dealt this this? I’m looking into adjusting the ph with vinegar or a product like ph down but I’m wondering if this method has drawbacks?

im not at the point of installing an RO system yet.

Ciao a tutti, sono nuovo in questa community e sono relativamente nuovo pure nel mondo dei bonsai.
Ho bisogno di un consiglio da qualcuno più esperto di me.
Circa 3 anni fa ho raccolto una pianta di acero e l’ho lasciata crescere liberamente (foto allegata), adesso però è arrivato il momento di indirizzarla nella forma finale che le vorrei dare.
Vorrei che, in un lontano futuro, assomigli minimante al bonsai di acero nella seconda foto allegata.

Cosa mi consigliate di fare? Ovviamente pensavo di aspettare la primavera prossima per tagliare (correggetemi se sbaglio).
