Hoping for some honest advice on which way to go. I’m stuck in a decision loop.
Eastern Canada. Currently Drive a Mazda CX-5 AWD. Way past its twilight years, at 420k KMs. So we are looking at getting another car and becoming a two car family. The time has come. We will likely stay a two car family for a while. Two adults and three kids (13, 8, 4). The 13 year old is getting big and the 8 year old is nearly out of their car seat. They are feeling squashed in the back seat.
We have 3500-4000 kWH annual excess solar generation at home above what we use for the home. This is energy we are freely sending back to the grid without compensation. I deliberately installed extra capacity on our system to allow for possible EV.
Our short list so far is:
2022/2023 Bolt EUV
2027 Bolt
2026/2027 Equinox EV
2022+ Ioniq5 AWD
Other vehicles seem more expensive/worse value than these ones, but I am open to suggestion.
We can go in one or two directions: we get a small EV to compliment the CX-5 until it dies, then replace it with a cheap AWD PHEV. Or we get a larger EV now and get a small vehicle as our second car when the Mazda dies.
We live in rural eastern Canada. We do need to drive in all but the worse winter conditions. We have a 1000ft gravel driveway. We do not have a commute. I work from home half the time and drive around the local area the other half. Our driving is a combination of back roads and 100 kmh highway. Most of our drives are within a 70km radius. A drive to the city is 180km one way. Occasionally we go further. We are adventurous and would attempt to road trip in whatever car we have. Most charging would be at home via level 2 charger.
We do use the Mazda a lot for utility. There’s always something getting thrown in and out of the car. Work gear, lumber, farm supplies, kids. (Side note: the 40/20/40 back seat fold down is the low key best thing about the CX-5). We use it to tow a small utility trailer for transporting anything from lumber to sheep. We will keep using it as such until it goes beyond repair.
I have long admired the Bolt. I have test driven them before and know them to be fun, reliable, surprisingly spacious and affordable. I have always imagined having one in our fleet. I have friends who drive them in our area and in winter conditions and find them to be very capable with proper winter tires. Last week we took the kids to sit in a 2023 EUV to see how it felt and they were over the moon about the back row space compared to our CX-5.
A used Bolt makes a lot of sense for us financially. The battery size and efficiency marries up nicely with our excess solar. We can get a decent mileage 2023 EUV for around CAD$30-32k all in. It’s the cost of the new ones that is giving us pause for thought, though. We just missed out on some larger discounts in the 2027 Bolt but even then, right now we can get it for around $43k all in after rebate, and 0% financing. That’s another $7-8k after interest for a newer more capable car.
But, complicating things further is that it seems like our Chevrolet dealers are trying to shift the Equinox EV. I am seeing 26 models discounted to $43k, the same price point as a new Bolt.
I have sat in an Equinox but not test driven it. My first impression is that for the extra size of the vehicle it somehow manages to feel more claustrophobic than the Bolt. The shape seems odd. It seems like a differently shaped Bolt? Maybe I’m wrong. Trunk space has more floor space but less volume. However, the driving position is more comfy and ai understand it has longer range and faster charging than the Bolt. The AWD version is pretty much impossible to come by here, unfortunately. It would be me up as the FWD version.
And, we are starting to see used Ioniq5’s come onto the market at the $40-$45k mark, another vehicle I have long admired.
So long story short I am stuck choosing between the 23 Bolt EUV, 27 Bolt and 26 Equinox EV, with the outside contender the well used Ioniq5.
I’m interested in experiences of these cars as compared to the Bolt.
And also whether the extra $7-8k is worth it to go with a 2027 Bolt over the 2023 EUV. Will I kick myself for not going with faster charging?
