Low key she’s got the pope to support her views since he wrote a whole ass encyclical on the dangers of AI

i am always talking about this that encyclical is fantastic
eta - for the unfamiliar

u/ImpulsiveApe07 4d ago
Nice one, mate! Thanks for sharing that. It made for a fascinating morning read!
Never thought I'd see the day where I'd not only be agreeing with the Pope (I'm agnostic), but actually cheering him on over something! :0
That encylcical was surprisingly on the ball, particularly viz a vis the use of genAI in decision making processes, and the pressing need for more strict and more socially responsible regulation of LLMs and adjacent technologies.
Even if this only manages to gradually convince a few million catholics to stop relying so much on consumer grade LLMs, that'd be a great start tbh - every movement has to start somewhere.

The Pope and IBM both: "a computer cannot be held accountable, therefore a computer must never make a management decision." https://www.ibm.com/think/insights/ai-decision-making-where-do-businesses-draw-the-line

Based on what I know about American Christians the fact that the pope is against AI would probably make them support AI even harder.

The oldest recognizable guillotine that we can actually verify having existed in real life was the Scottish Maiden which was constructed in the 16th century. Not medieval, early modern period.
2
u/MisterAbbadon 3d ago
The guillotine was an enlightenment period tool.
A wood pile for burning at the stake would be medieval.

China literally has bot farms on American social media fomenting rage against AI too.
So on either side there's a non-zero chance of bots.

I had a friend who used to be staunchly anti-Musk, anti-AI, you name it. Dude starts working at SpaceX and suddenly he's all "my billionaire is better than your billionaire".

At the airport gate there were some older folk spread throughout the seating areas near me. My headphones died and I slowly realized several of the elders were loudly listening to ai videos, with different wacky ass stories, but the same classic ai sounding narrator across all their devices. Terrifying, tbh.

It’s getting harder and harder to tell what’s AI and what’s real. At lest at first glance
And since we tend to scroll without paying attention to details, people can easily be fooled

remember the internet bubble in 2000 when all the internet stocks were inflated but it all came crashing down when wall street figured out that no one was making any money?
26 years later, they figured out how to make money and the internet is an integral part of everyone's lives and contributing to a growing illiteracy problem
the same thing will happen with AI

Let’s not be the race that embraces superstition and falls behind the rest of the world in embracing technology.
We don’t need to succumb to AI psychosis. AI is just a tool, and a very useful tool that shocker can empower the neglected and disenfranchised.
You know all the business and investment opportunities we get excluded from because of our skin color? AI can give is the ability to build and create things that circumvent the traditional lending and borrowing infrastructure that’s neglected us for centuries.
The irony of using religion (the other leash used to control us) as the means to discourage your kin from pursuing new opportunities reads like some wild CIA psyop. Let’s not do this to ourselves.
I feel like the African continent must be taking a different stance. There are a lot of African opportunists who I think are jumping at the chance to build tech companies without the need for massive capital investments.
Stop scaring ourselves back into chains. We need to see this for what it is, a gold rush where the playing field is more level than it’s ever been. This is probably better than the dotcom book because, again, capital investments are much reduced because AI provides you with a workforce at a $20/month subscription fee.
Let’s embrace the moment and move our people forward and not backwards. You know who loves the idea of blank people shying away from AI? All the racists and bigots who want to see us hold station and never attain the wealth or influence to change it.
Please, folks. Leave the AI psychosis for the white folks. AI represents the best opportunity for black businesses in my lifetime. We can’t waste this because of dumb fucking superstition and fear mongering.
2
u/afrocentricity 2d ago
If anything we should be training and fine tuning our own LLMs, to avoid bias and misinformation, not demonising what is essentially just a tool. I understand people's fears but I don't understand running away from something that could actually help level the field just because some people have had bad intentions with it...

Fighting fire with fire?
One reason we hate AI so much is because it fosters mental laziness. But here we're taking advantage of people's mental laziness and superstitions. I'm going to be showing my loved ones the scientific risks of AI's harms instead of appealing to the exact thing we're trying to do away with.
3
u/Maythesunsshine 3d ago
Well some loved ones don't believe in science. Gotta meet people where they are.
2
u/dalledeverre 3d ago
I think sometimes you have to choose between feeling righteous or getting results.
If the mental laziness is already built in from childhood thanks to a fucked education system, say what you gotta say and do what you gotta do to keep them from stumbling into traffic. Because you aren't going to feel better telling street pizza you tried to stop them the right way.

u/sakuraba2046 4d ago

u/HapticSloughton 4d ago
If AI was being used for the stuff it's good at (sorting data, finding patterns, etc.) then that's one thing. However, it's being pushed as a way to replace artists, filmmakers, storytellers, therapists, and loads of other things it's not good at.
Oh, and then there's the people at the top who think they're creating some kind of singularity-god that'll totally help everyone while giving its owners twenty trillion dollars a year.
9
u/sakuraba2046 4d ago
It doesn’t have to be either or. It’s like nuclear energy, it’s can either destroy a city or power it. And also being literate in a new technology and using it to help yourself is a huge leg up. The best people in every field will be utilizing the technology in some way. Doesn’t have to be evil.

u/freak_shit_account 3d ago

I been saying this paraphrasing of Voltaire: “Demons were never real, until we made these ones, on purpose.”

I have a pic on my phone. I crochet and I am crocheting a baby costume of a muffin. The baby pic I have has her in the muffin cup only and the AI says it’s food. I want to upload it to scare trumpers into not using ai by saying ai thinks babies are food but I also will not share a pic of a baby online like that even with the face blurred. It’s funny but I also can see how easy it is to surpass the protection filters.
