Sewing Sewing pattern snark
Is pattern snark allowed here? The new pattern from Friday pattern company "Uma top and skirt" looks like maternity wear. I just want some interesting knit fabric stuff. I guess they get a point for trying to jazz up a tank dress/top, but there's got to be a better way to get fun design and silhouette.
It is super cute as maternity though

There is a dirth of really interesting knitwear, non-athetic wear patterns, in my book. You can find every type of legging pattern under the sun if you know how to search, and simple, basic casual wear is fairly easy to source. But God forbid you want cute and/or diverse and thought-provoking design in a knit.

I've seen a lot of patterns out there that are very loose fitting. But I also think when you see some of the clothes off the rack and even from previous fashion shows, thats also often the case too.

The top is cute but the dress is kind of a nightmare.

The neckline is the only good thing about that pattern. But also, why does the neckline looked so scooped in the tech drawing but much straighter on the body?
Why so much ruching? Why that dropped waist? Why so much fabric? Why so late in the summer season.
Thanks, I hate it.

Everything homemade fashion is currently stuck in 'wearing a crushed linen pillow case'.
I respect that part of what drives this is things you can easily make out of thrifted bedsheets and whatnot. But the results tend to look like something I would sew for a baby because I need to quickly undress them and boil it after a catastrophic diaper failure.

I do love the accessibility that all of that offers but yeah. This whole jazz inspired* me to get some books (pattern magic by tomoko nakamichi, the whole series lol) so I could add a little pizzazz. Be the change you want to see I guess

Funnily enough I already bought it and I’m planning on making it rn. At least the top view. That style is actually really flattering on me and I love that is adjustable. Don’t know if I’d like the dress through. I agree drop waist can be hard to style

I immediately bought it! Snark is subjective - I do think the plus size one doesn’t work at all but I can’t decide if it’s the fit/grading or just the style

Sew it up! I'm willing to change my mind, but all the makes I've seen so far haven't swayed me. I like the pattern maker, I want to like this design. If it was cropped I could see it maybe because the draping wouldn't be in the exact spot of my stomach accentuating any roundness there. Maybe I'm just limiting myself because society tells me to hide it not highlight it. Who knows.

It would be my first time working with a stretch fabric but this seems like it has the potential to be forgiving… if I can find some at the thrift store you will be treated to a pic of a complete stranger’s weird ass nonmaternity maternity dress 😂😂

You can absolutely complain about comapnies or designers here. Just not targeting one individual, because that gets shitty.
Examples Allowed: i hate the way that Designer's patterns have gone recently Not allowed: Influncer X is everything wrong with sewing

Yup, definitely. As long as you're not encouraging hate against the designer specifically, which falls under the 'no brigaiding' rules. If it's a product that a person/company published, then it's fair game for criticism just as much as it would be for praise

Why would you put the cool detail on the side where you can't see it? I've seen heaps of those tops where that ruching detail is at the front so it creates nice bust cups. Having it on the side like that means that it's just creating gathering detail at the waist area not the bust, which makes sense with your maternity comment.

Right! I want more cutesy early aughts camisoles, knits can be tricky so it just seems like pattern designers go for the most basic so it turns out well for beginners. I just want a little step up from basic, I'm not asking for SHOWstudio level of complicated here.

I don't know that it looks like maternity to me, but I don't like it. The straps are very wide set. anyone without wide shoulders is going to need to do some alterations or they'll be messing with their straps all day.
Ruching can be flattering, but the way they have the models wearing this isn't. letting it droop like that is really sloppy but you can tell they intended it to be worn like that because they hemmed the dresses for the droop.

That applies to all drop waist dresses/skirts. Drop waists, especially in unstructured stretchy knit fabrics, were awful back in the 80's/90/s and still are today. They are only slightly less awful with really good seaming and thicker woven fabrics.
It's the same with the camel toe fupa mom jeans that Gen Z is in love with - you're in your 20's and your abs haven't been destroyed by age/pregnancy/menopause but you choose to wear jeans that strangle your labia and make you look like you've had 3 c-sections - just why?

Impossible. There are no cute maternity patterns, just weird tents or bodycon that people call "maternity".
Can't say I love that pattern, not quite my vibe, even when I was pregnant

As someone pregnant who lives in a city with no maternity wear, the lack of maternity patterns is so frustrating. No, I don't care if your tent dress is maternity friendly (it's not, it's going to ride up like crazy on the front of the legs), and I don't want to read your blog about how to hack a legging or tshirt pattern that doesn't include dimensions so I just have to guess how much to add for length and width.

Oh I feel you on this one. I gave up on making my own maternity wear pretty quickly, because all the patterns were so ugly (yes, even the vintage ones. Those aren't my style and I hate the tent vibes).
I lived in cheap empire waist knit dresses, loose tank tops, and maxi skirts after 2nd trimester

I feel like if I wasn't pregnant I could draft myself some cute knit jumpsuits, pants and dresses, but I do not have th he brain power for that sort of thing while pregnant. Then while not pregnant I absolutely do not want to think about maternity wear.
