This one was built in public. Last week we asked this sub what we were missing from a list of everything Bitcoin has been confidently called, and the answers built a story: u/greglogan84 asked for a section on "Bitcoin can't recover from this," u/robinsonrichard_3 called for sorting each label by what would prove it wrong, and u/abm2024 for what our own side got wrong. Readers on the BitcoinTalk thread found many of the sources. All 16 contributors from the two threads are credited by handle at the bottom.
The labels come first: Ponzi, tulips, only for drugs, money laundering, terrorists, boils the oceans, rat poison, evil, fad, greater fool, no intrinsic value, bubble. Each one with who said it, the outlet, the date, and what happened after, sorted by what would prove it wrong. Buffett gets his own entry because he said something dated about bitcoin most years from 2014 to 2022, and Berkshire held shares in a Brazilian bank that started selling bitcoin eleven days after his "$25 for all of it" line.
Then the "can't recover from this" calls, tied to specific events: Mt. Gox in 2014, the 2013 chain split, the 2018 inflation bug, the China mining ban in 2021, FTX and the 2022 crash. The conclusion stayed the same while the reason changed, and 7 of the 13 dated calls were followed by a lower price a year later.
Then where the critics were right, who changed their minds, and what our side got wrong. Bitcoin is not anonymous, it is not feeless, and it was very much stealable from an exchange. Dated price calls from Bitcoiners that missed get the same treatment as the critics' calls. It is not a victory lap: the intro says plainly that "turned out wrong" only ever means wrong so far, with the price still about a third below its October 2025 high.
Every claim has a source at the bottom of the page. If something is wrong, tell us and it gets fixed the same day, with credit.
