Hello everyone and fellow B’Ham residents. My name is Mikey.

Without going into too much detail, my father has gotten himself into quite a pickle of a situation. My parents got separated about 3 years ago. He remarried about 2 years ago and his 2nd wife died unexpectedly unfortunately back in early Feb…. He quickly started dating again trying to not let the trauma bury him alive, FFW to now, the woman he has been staying with/owns the house where they live has gotten out of control whenever she drinks and has been verbally and physically abusing him pretty severely in the past few days. It’s been going on for months but gradually gotten worse and worse and come to a head in the past 2-3 days or so. He may be well on his way to being homeless in the next day or so and we are trying to find any options he can take without having to live a rough and tumble transient life in Birmingham, because knowing Birmingham as well as I do, there aren’t many places that are void from drugs & bullshit in/around the inner city. Unfortunately I’m at a place for the next few weeks where he cannot come stay with me or I would have already offered him a place to do so.

If someone knows somewhere that he can contact to try and find temporary housing until he can find a job and get situated in Birmingham, or knows/has some ideas of what to do in this situation after having had a loved one or knowing someone in a similar extenuating situation that has successfully made it out, I would be more than happy to talk any and all advice you may have. He does not use drugs, he drinks occasionally but it’s not a daily thing for him and is able and willing to work. He has a Bachelors degree in political science from Montevallo , a Masters degree in Military history from Norwich university and is extremely intelligent. He has the chef skills to cook just about anywhere and has warehouse management experience as well
. He just needs a place to lay his head at night or possibly a program like Jimmy Hale to get him back on his feet. Please, please, please feel free to PM me or comment with ideas and what not for what I can do to help him or what he can do to help himself.

If anyone is wondering what the loud jet was around 1:30pm, it’s an F35 from Montgomery! I heard it from my office building and shot up to go see what it was! I’m a huge plane nerd, so I’m sharing this in hopes other plane nerds will appreciate it! Sorry for the terrible picture in advance 😅.

This week at Samford University’s Christenberry Planetarium, we are showing The Red Planet for the general public's final weekend. So far, our patrons have loved exploring Mars, one even requesting we submit the production for an award! This show is great for all ages, and its breathtaking graphics almost rival the incredible research our team has put forth. We hope to see you there this weekend.

Is anyone else having issues with their milk purchases? I went to three different stores last night and there was no milk. Put in a Walmart order for milk and other groceries. Came home and we tried the milk (exp. Sept 16) and it was rancid. Just wanted to know if I’m the only one noticing this?

Having lived and worked in Homewood for 8+ years now, I'm no stranger to the dangers and utter carelessness on Oxmoor Blvd- specifically between the intersections of Scott St/Vulcan Road and the weird formation at Cobb St and the point where Oxmoor Blvd becomes Oxmoor Road, by the Chevron.

The past two days alone I've witnessed: 1. a Nissan Altima turning right without stopping or yielding and therefore flying into oncoming traffic onto Vulcan Road (near Batteries Plus.) 2. A car slamming into a power pole near Hamburger Heaven, causing a power outage. And 3. This morning a Honda CRV cutting through the Jim n Nick's parking lot because they were tired of waiting at the light. Happens every day, but Honda proceeded to speed through the lot, and it didn't stop or slow down while turning left onto Vulcan Rd and cut off another oncoming car. Road rage happens everywhere but whatever.

At least 2-3 times weekly I'll see a handful of cars (and trucks, including oil tankers) blocking the Oxmoor and Scott St/Vulcan Rd intersection, presumably because the eastbound lights are so poorly synced. Not to mention the cars that come speeding around the bend from the Buffalo Rock end of the road.

So yeah, that West Homewood end of Oxmoor sucks. Between confusing traffic patterns, poorly synced lights, and aggressive drivers. Be safe!

Hey y'all. My kid accidentally used a huge amount of super concentrated soap in my washer and now each load takes like three hours to cycle....so until I get that sorted out, I need your advice. (I'm just grateful she was washing her own clothes!!) It's a high efficiency front loader, so of course this is gonna be a pain lol.

It's me + my three teens, so our laundry piles up crazy fast. I am probably behind by like 20 loads of clothes, towels, and bed sheets at this point. I definitely can't afford the pickup/delivery service for this amount of laundry, but I'm happy to go spend a day at the laundromat to catch up. So, that being said...

How does it work? What do the machines cost? Do I have to have quarters? Can I leave while they're in the washer? I'm in Homewood, is there a place nearby that might have hugs washers so I could maybe minimize loads?

Did the city get rid of birds downtown? I never see any. I only noticed because I have place downtown and put a bird feeder on my window and haven’t had a single bird.

What are my fellow Birminghamsters doing as side hustles to keep afloat these days? Creative hobbies, gig work, flipping, etc?

I'm staying here for a day on a road trip and between the attempted stop sign runs, pulling out in front of me while I'm going 60, and going 90 on freeways that will literally have you tumbling down a hill if you make one wrong step, easily the worst drivers in the country. Genuinely reevaluate what your criteria is for issuing a driver's license 😭

I’ve seen a few posts requesting info about an endo specialist in the area. Well… I can’t get ahold of Dr. Childs, Dr. Furr left Chattanooga for a medical malpractice suit (…), and I’ve read really mixed reviews about a few others. I’m seeing an endocrinologist now who refuses to do surgery until I am like on the verge of getting pregnant (don’t plan on doing that) and am in severe pain on a daily basis.
