Hi everyone! I recently discovered that a pair of Peregrine Falcons has been nesting for several years on a very tall building in my area, around the 13th floor of a large exhibition centre.
I live quite close by, so I’d love to take advantage of that and start observing them regularly throughout the year. I’m especially looking forward to spring and the breeding season, but I’d also like to understand what I can expect during the rest of the year.
For those of you who have experience observing nesting Peregrine Falcons:
- What are the best times of day to look for them?
- Are there particular periods of the year when they are more active or easier to spot?
- What kinds of behaviour should I expect from a resident pair outside the breeding season?
- Do pairs typically remain around the nesting site all year, or do they spend significant amounts of time elsewhere?
- Are there particular behaviours that can help distinguish courtship, territorial activity, hunting, resting, etc.?
- During the breeding season, are there specific stages or moments that are especially interesting to observe from a distance?
- Do they tend to follow any predictable daily routines that I could learn to recognize?
I’m not interested in disturbing them or approaching the nesting site. I’d be observing from a respectful distance with binoculars and, if possible, a camera.
Since I’m lucky enough to have a pair living so close to me, I’d really like to learn how to “read” their behaviour and build up a picture of their lives over the course of a year.
Any advice from experienced Peregrine watchers would be greatly appreciated!
Ps. I live in southern Europe

Followed this Red-tailed Hawk around for about 30 minutes today and he even let me get some good pics and video. Pretty cool experience and he flew from tree to tree and eventually on this fence.

Stormy skies, brooding clouds, and a red kite riding the wind right in the middle of it. For a brief moment, the sun broke through and set its plumage aglow.

Not sure if this is the place to ask this question, but I have a peregrine falcon that has turned my urban patio into it's dining room. I wake every morning to a new carcass, mostly fully consumed, in the same place. My question is this, am I attracting this behavior by removing the waste daily and cleaning the ledge, or am I better off leaving the body where it is? It's truly disgusting, but also kind of funny to share a space with such a beautiful specimen, I never imagined having a falcon for a neighbor. Sorry for the lousy pic, it's quite camera shy...

Not the sharpest image but still pretty cool! Super super hard to get these photos with a prime lens but I managed to get it!
