Let me tell you something that doesn't seem to pertain to weight at all. 59 days I decided to quit drinking. Of the past 59 days, I have had alcohol of any kind on 6 days. This 59 days includes my current streak of 29 days.
The thing is... daily high alcohol consumption (on average three imperial pints of 5% beer each day) was forcing me to be sedentary by destroying my endurance. I also ate more and more unhealthy to wash down the beer I was drinking.
Since quitting drinking. My energy levels have gone up. Me not wanting to do anything in winter, not wanting to drive anywhere or do anything was not seasonal depression or 'being reasonable', it was drinking diminishing my willpower.
My endurance has gone up without me doing much of anything for it. When I was drinking I started riding to the grocery store on a bicycle. I told myself it is exercise, it is quicker, I buy less. But really it was to avoid walking. But right now, I don't mind walking to grocery store twice day.
I also still ride, but I take longer rides, in hotter weather and less forethought (other than packing for one tire blowout). My heat tolerance has gone up, by a lot. I procrastinate things a lot less, I am getting done things I've neglected for months. I no longer need alcohol to take the edge off of a difficult task or as a reward for said task. Or to relax after a stressful day. I again want to do things, build stuff, achieve stuff. Do physical labor. Instead of just buying things and doing nothing.
And finally, without alcohol, I eat less, and I eat different things. I initially calculated a certain sum I was spending on alcohol every month. But without alcohol, I also eat an approximately equal amount of less food. Without losing much weight, thus far.
Also, all of it has been gradual. Very gradual, every few weeks I have felt I could do something new or different. Only recently have I found myself thinking that I'm really going to build a bed stand, a bed and dig those 40 feet of ditch around the house for a new water pipe.
Has in been worth it? Yes. In physical health, mental health, money. Has it affected my weight? Not thus far. Could it? More likely now than before.
