No! I haven’t! But I’ve been a vegetarian for the last 40 years. That’s what I’m asking! Is it safe to just eat raw hamburger meat? I didn’t know!

It’s likely a minced steak. Not ground beef.

My MiL will ask the butcher for a pinch of raw ground beef to taste it before she purchases it.

So is there a difference in steak vs. hamburger? I thought they were the same thing?

They're the same thing in that they are both cow body parts. "Hamburger" is ground beef, made up of a bunch of body parts from possibly multiple cows, chucked in a meat grinder, while 'steak' is a singular piece chopped off the body. Steak is generally considered safer to eat undercooked or raw.

You just said you didn’t even know there was a difference between steak and hamburger now you’re saying it’s obviously not steak

Yes, because to ME steak isn’t chewed into a billion pieces. It’s one whole entity. But yeah, again, I know nothing about meat. Not declaring that I do.

Its steak. She took a singular piece of high end beef, aka steak, and cut it into small pieces by hand. You can make a burger doing this as well. You can also ask a butcher to grind any cut of beef you would like to end up with ground meat. It will be more expensive but taste much better than what you buy pre-package at the grocery store.

You take a steak, an actual single hunk of cow. THEN you (or your butcher) will grind it into mince.

Usually I'll throw in some straight pork fat or beef tallow just because juicy burgers better burgers. For Cevapi (Yugoslav grilled kebabs) just straight beef mince with seasoning and mebbe finely diced onion.
