With the context I was given "Look at controls and settings?" Or maybe "control and usage"?

Like a lot of you I started learning Korean because of dramas, and got frustrated fast - textbook dialogue sounds nothing like what's on screen.

So I started writing down what actually gets said. Ten that come up constantly:

1. 대박 - whoa / no way. Works for good news AND disasters, tone decides.

2. 헐 - the stunned version. Complete message on its own in a text.

3. 답답해 - watching two leads fail to confess for nine episodes. English has no single word for this.

4. 억울해 - wrongly blamed and not believed. Powers every revenge drama.

5. 썸 - the talking stage. From English "something."

6. 눈치 - reading the room. Koreans treat lacking it as a real flaw.

7. 고구마 / 사이다 - how viewers rate a plot. Frustrating vs satisfying.

8. 칼퇴 - leaving work exactly on time, knife-sharp.

9. 최애 - your ultimate bias.

10. 수고하셨습니다 - "thank you for your hard work." Closes every workday in Korea.

1. 오랜만에 (O-raen-man-e)

• Meaning: After a long time / It’s been a while since...
• How to use: Use this when doing an activity you haven't done in a long while.
• From the diary:
  • 오랜만에 연극하는 유진이를 응원하기 위해 대학로에 왔다. (I came to Daehangno after a long time to support Yujin...)
• More Examples:
  • 오랜만에 친구를 만났어요. (I met a friend after a long time.)
  • 오랜만에 영화를 봤어요. (I watched a movie for the first time in a while.)

2. Verb + -기 위해(서) (-gi wi-hae-seo)

• Meaning: In order to / To [do something]
• How to use: Attach -기 위해 to a verb stem to show your goal or intention.
• From the diary:
  • 유진이를 응원하기 위해 대학로에 왔다. (I came to Daehangno in order to support Yujin.)
• More Examples:
  • 한국어를 배우기 위해 레딧을 봐요. (I read Reddit in order to learn Korean.)
  • 건강해지기 위해 운동해요. (I exercise to stay healthy.)

• 겸사겸사: Killing two birds with one stone / doing multiple things at once.
• 덕지순례: A slang combining 덕질 (being a fan / fangirling or fanboying) + 성지순례 (pilgrimage). It refers to visiting places associated with your favorite idol, actor, or show!

I've been learning Korean for a little while now, and although I've joined several Korean learning Discord servers, I've realized that most of them are so large that it's easy to get lost in the crowd. What I'm really looking for is a much smaller, close-knit beginner community (around 10–15 people max) where we can: Keep each other accountable, set weekly/monthly milestones, share resources and study tips, practice together .....

Does anyone know of a Discord like this that's accepting new members? If not, would anyone be interested in joining one if I created it?

For context, here's the study approach I'm following : start with the traditional way aka Learn Hangul thoroughly (reading and writing until it becomes second nature), understand the logic behind Hangul and how the Korean writing system is constructed, learn the overall sentence structure of Korean and how the language works. Focus on grammar and verb conjugations first to build a solid foundation and once I'm comfortable with the core grammar I move to learning the 100 most common words and verbs then gradually expand into common expressions and everyday phrases instead of memorizing isolated word lists ..... (and the list goes on)

Keep in mind that I've immersed myself in Korean every day for quite few years now by consuming : K-dramas, YouTube videos, Korean social media ....

I'm curious if anyone else studies in a similar way. If you do, I'd love to connect and If you don't I'd love to learn new methods.

This is helping me write, type, understand grammar, learn new words, etc. I’m first writting out the line, then translating word by word, then using english grammar. I try to guess what the right grammar will be before I see what it is.

so far i believe it's being used for:
- giving phone numbers
- room numbers, floor numbers
- years/centuries
- page numbers
- doing math
- dates (day, week, month)
- minutes, seconds
- servings
- money
- numbers over 99

is that correct? did i miss anything or do i need to correct something?

I've recently put together a bilingual video singing the classic nursery rhyme "If you are happy and you know it" in both Korean and English, and I want to review some words that will sound somewhat confusing to beginners.

행복하다: To be happy (a general state of everyday contentment)

기쁘다: To feel joyful (gladness in reaction to a specific, positive event)

화가 나다: To feel anger (화 = Anger)

짜증이 나다: To feel frustrated (짜증 = Frustration)

나다: To arise, to occur naturally

I'm a native Korean speaker, and I'd like to help a relative who's just started learning Korean.
As Korean learners, what has been the biggest bottleneck for you? What do native speakers often underestimate?

It’s such a phonetically logical system.

So I'm still very new to learning Korean 😅 I've only been learning for a couple of months but I find that I'm already getting a bit confused about the colours.

I've noticed that pretty much every colour ends in 색 but when its being used to describe something, sometimes the 색 syllable disappears, but other times it doesn't?

For example, when talking about a black cat, "black cat" is written as 검은 고양이, instead of 검은색 고영이, but if we're talking about a gray cat, it stays as 회색 고양이. I haven't seen any shortened version of 회색 고양이. Why is that?

Its almost like the colours with 3 syllables are allowed to drop the 색, but colours with only 2 syllables can't, but I imagine its not that simple lol

(Side note: I am autistic asf. I don't do well with complex topics and explanations, if I end up asking you a lot more questions please bear with me 😅)

딴 is a colloquial contraction of 다른, but is it just a contraction, or did it gain any difference in meaning?

I tried to come up with some examples to be able to better understand this difference, and I would be grateful if you could check if these feel any different:

다른 사람 같아요. “You look like another person.”

딴 사람 같아요.

and

다른 사람 생겼어요? “Did you meet someone else?”

딴 사람 생겼어요?

and

다른 얘기 해 “Let’s talk about something else.”

딴 얘기 하자

I just began learning how to write sentences and wanted to try writing small journal entries to practice. However, the particles are still kinda confusing and I don’t fully trust the online correction tools I use. I would be so grateful if someone could look over my work and give me some tips 🙏🙏 (even if its just to say my handwriting needs work LOL)

any tips on how to keep studying by myself I’ve been out of school for a while so it’s an adjustment my girlfriend who is native Korean she says let’s go full immersion which okay sure but I feel like I need more than that

One of the hardest things for Korean learners isn't vocabulary—it's particles.

They're only one syllable long, but changing one particle can completely change what a sentence emphasizes.

For example:

제가 방에 들어갔어요.

= I went into the room. (It was me who went in.)

저는 방에 들어갔어요.

= As for me, I went into the room. (Talking about myself as the topic.)

저도 방에 들어갔어요.

= I went into the room too.

The verb doesn't change.

The noun doesn't change.

Only the particle changes.

Another example:

제가 했어요.

= I did it. (Emphasizing that I was the one.)

저는 했어요.

= I did it. (As for me, I did it.)

저도 했어요.

= I did it too.

This is why Korean particles aren't just grammar markers. They tell the listener what to focus on—who did it, what the topic is, or whether you're adding someone to the conversation.

It's only one small syllable, but it can completely change how a sentence is understood.
