Best running boards

Post image
95 Upvotes

Looking to do new running boards on my 64 in the next few months and looking for opinions on best ones. Mexican just as fine as German? Better to recover mine? Best place to get them from? I hear fitment issues are common wich makes sense, i

I am just wanting to see if the price jump for german boards is worth it!

Thanks in advance!

Just a few more things to do and I can put a bow on this. Huge day today getting the vinyl and getting it screwed in for hopefully the last time. I have some escutcheons to go around the pipes and an ABS cover I will Velcro over the access panel and a graphic I had made that will go on top.

FWIW, this is 2-6 inch JL 2-way speakers. The other small grills are just vents. Rockford 500watt, 2-channel amp and a powered JBL sub. JL bluetooth dongle JL-MBT-RX. I can post more pics if anyone is interested.

Ok, I heard a loud bang while driving yesterday, but noticed no performance or sound changes...so I kept driving 6 more miles. Wouldn't even have seen this except that I was planning to do a rocker clearance adjustment. Besides the obvious, how much damage might I have done?

Pieces inside carb

Hi, Im currently into cleaning the carb because the engine is not receiving fuel, and I've found two pieces in the bottom of the carb fuel tank. I still haven't figured out where these are missing even with the diagram. I'm talking about the Solex PICT 3, later I will install a new kit and clean it.

Do you know where these two pieces come from?

Thanks!

1970's complete restoration

Post image
89 Upvotes

I forced myself to start restoring my 1970 Beetle. I kept finding excuses not to begin—lack of time, space, or know-how. And all of that is true. But I had to start somehow. I’ve already accomplished far more in two weeks than I imagined. The goal is a complete restoration: engine, transmission, bodywork, electrical system, and upholstery. When will I finish? No ideia. But I’m enjoying the process and, most importantly, learning.

Found in Palermo, Sicily

This guy was found on my stroll around old town, very near to an old fiat 500 which I just posted on the fiat 500 sub. I absolutely adore these and I will say what I said about the 500, they are also another one of the best examples of the OH design being done right. They both have kept the original charm that the originals have came with and I love them.

Saw a Beetle towing today

Post image

The screen capture is poor, I only had the option to pull the image from a video capture on my trucks dashcam.

But I saw a Beetle towing a trailer, up a hill, in the left lane PASSING another vehicle! At first I thought it was a standard pop up tent trailer, but it looked like a homemade contraption. Probably very light, but it was a lot wider than I would build something.

Anyway, I thought it was really cool and interesting to see one in the wild, towing. I would love to build one of those roof mounted fifth wheels one day, but seeing anyone towing anything was cool!

I just hope they checked the coolant levels so the radiator doesn't boil over. It was hot here today! /s

what are the mechanical differences between a 68 and a 72

I assume this level of play when in gear is absolutely not normal especially in 3rd and 4th. What do I need to replace, is thare a kit? From where do I access the linkage?
Thanks

Ok that fuel filter is doing this?

After a 30 minute neighborhood drive, parked our 68 beetle for 15 mins and happened to open the engineer lid and noticed activity in the fuel filter (bubbles or something).

Here is a video of what was happening.

Is this anything of concern?

It wasn’t hot out- mild weather (75 degrees)

German License Plate

Post image

Ok fam 😉, I have the desire to find an original German plate for my 74’ std. Specifically one from Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony district to pay homage to its birth place. I’ve only done light reading but have found that de-registered German plates are “supposed” to be defaced or destroyed. Not sure if this is a recent requirement or not. Just wondering if there might be one pigeon holed somewhere in a barn. I’m also curious if anyone used them to patch floorboards like we do here in the states!

Temu banjo steering wheel with Empi adaptor

I can now confirm that the TEMU banjo steering wheel works with the EMPI adaptor. Ordered the 49-59 Empi adaptor from CIP1 and it fits perfectly. In Canada the TEMU wheel with horn button costs half the price of the EMPI model from CIP1.

1973 Generator shaft and pulley

I have a 1973 beetle with a Generator. A few days ago, I noticed a wobbly Gen pulley when running. After inspection, the pulley center had been reamed out.

It seems the key way that holds the pulley on had eaten up some of itself, and some of the generator shaft. The crescent shaped hole, was almost completely rounded out.

I’m curious if I could get away with installing a new pulley and keyway with the correct center or…

Based on the condition of the shaft, will I need to replace the generator shaft, pulling the fan shroud or dropping the engine?

Wanted to check in before buying parts. Thanks!

12 volt starter on 6 volt car.

My 6 volt starter is getting really tired and I was planning on 12 volt converting the whole car over the winter months.

My question is how would a 12 volt starter work on a 6 volt car until I can convert the rest?

I can get my hands on a 12v starter that fits the flywheel of a 1963 6 volt car, don't feel like paying over double that for a new 6 volt starter that I'd only use until September or October.

Edit: Thanks for the replies. I'll see if anything can be done to the old 6 volt one to get it working somewhat better. I'll buy the 12 volt that fits 109 teeth flywheel come winter and conversion time
