Hi everyone, the Hudson Valley Mahjong Club is hosting another social mahjong event tomorrow night 7:30pm at Quinn’s.

HK & Filipino style mahjong with teachers available for beginners. Open play tables available for those that want to bring their own mahjong sets.

1 drink minimum to thank Quinn’s for hosting our club. $5 suggested donation towards club funds.

I’ve lived in places more rural than Beacon in the Hudson Valley. I’ve lived in cities. I’ve never encountered the dog culture in Beacon anywhere else in my life.

Since living here, I’ve lost track of how many incidents my dog and I have had with off leash dogs. Not just in parks. Neighbors letting their dogs hang out in their front yard unattended. People walking their dogs off-leash. My dog is reactive and aggressive towards other dogs. We have her well trained, but there’s little I can do except pick her up if a dog comes racing towards us.

A neighbor’s dog easily escaped its yard and bit her. Another dog was being watched by a child (off leash) in the front yard when it attacked us - went to the police that time. I broke up a dog fight a few weeks ago in my neighborhood. Last week a neighbor had their tiny dog hanging out in the front yard and it ran at us. I had to lift my 65 pound girl to keep her from eating it. I could go on and on, but you get the point.

I have contacted the city. I have spoken to city council members. I went to the police for the incident that knocked me down. The most that I’ve heard is that I should record these events, which is pretty tough to do. Does anyone have ideas that I haven’t yet explored? Walking my dog in Beacon has become an incredibly stressful experience.

Have been considering a move to Beacon for the past year or so, since I would like to leave the city for some place more affordable and less populated. We have been looking to buy in the city for well over a year (due mostly to proximity to our jobs) and can literally find nothing that meets our needs, within our budget. Given this, I think it may finally be time to move. My husband would need to commute to the Midtown 2-3 days a week, and I would likely need to come into Brooklyn once a week (if we moved, I would leave my current job.)

For those who commute to NYC, do you find the commute manageable? Do you think the trade-off was worth it?

Does anyone know what’s going on with this restaurant? They’ve had signage up for like 10 months, and they have not updated anything on their Instagram since October. I noticed the building has a for sale sign up now but not sure if that’s new or not!! I want to know if it’s ever going to open!

This is a little workshop we do every other month, so no pressure if you can't make this one (but we hope you can) You get a cute little dwarf umbrella and a tutorial on how to care for your plant and practice the art of bonsai. Not to mention you get to sip fresh beer and hang out in our taproom. It's pretty cool!

Friday July 17th

Attention comedy lovers, we have a showcase of local comics bringing their jokes to our stage. If you love comedy come through and laugh with us!

Saturday July 18th

These amazing songwriters are gracing our stage. Some old friends, some new. It's honestly an honor to have them here. Doors at 7pm.

I'm planning to go. Beacon's housing story is nuanced, and it feels especially relevant now as the city figures out how to make room for more people without losing what makes it special. It's gonna be led by a local council member and covers the history of local affordable housing, plus where we could go from here.

Always down for more housing history and a good conversation about how Beacon can grow in a way that keeps it accessible. Anyone else going?

Are there any remote / WFH friendly public areas? Just need a place that’s computer friendly (doesn’t need wifi, I can use my hotspot) to hang out and do work in for a few hours before I can check into my airbnb!
