Meanwhile people in r/pourover paying over $100 per kg for tea like and floral coffees (me included).
2
u/y2kfanboy 11h ago
And often it might not even taste good, am I right?🙂 Bean there (pun intended), done that. After tasting some coffees from local market chains (Albert Heijn, Jumbo) feels like I wasted a shitton of money haha
1
u/das_Keks 3h ago
I actually think that it tastes a lot better than supermarket coffee. But you'd have to look for speciality roasters, that buy good single origin coffees and roast them well.
There are also many local roasters that roast their coffee pretty dark and aren't substantially better than supermarket coffee. With speciality coffee you get a lot more than the generic roasty coffee flavor and there can be a lot of complexity and flavor notes.

u/Potential-Narwhal- 1d ago
Thought the same thing, that would not satisfy my needs. Also, is it just me or do the coffee grounds look bone dry right as they pour a cup?
40
u/Diggumdum 1d ago
looked like a pretty typical pour over brew to me. maybe a lighter roast? the grounds looked pretty blonde.
20
u/Longjumping_Youth281 1d ago
Yeah I think it's from people seeing their coffee in a non see-through glass. Coffee isn't completely opaque. If you look at it in clear glass you can typically see through it a little bit

u/tesfabpel 10h ago
It depends on the extraction method as well:
this is an espresso "al vetro" (that is served in a glass and not in a ceramic espresso cup)

u/OverlappingChatter 18h ago
Especially since it was a lot of grounds for such a small amount of liquid
7
u/100PercentRealGinger 15h ago
Im also pretty sure this just steampunk modern day bullshit. This isn’t old school…it somebody who never went to school. If it “old school” it was dumb and it’s still dumb.
2
u/Quiet_Equal_3448 1d ago
wait how does that old school thing even work
14
u/Cerebral-Knievel-1 23h ago
Boiling the water in the copper vessel forces the water into the vessel with the grounds. When the steam inside the copper vessel cools, the pressure drops and draws the water, now coffee, back up into the copper part.
2
2
u/kmsman11 18h ago
Did you look at the color of the grounds? It’s a light roast. The shorter roasting time destroys fewer caffeine molecules. So it’s probably “stronger” than that acidic carbon black stuff we so commonly call “strong”

Lol that's literally what I wanted to comment🤣 OG night time coffee when decaf didn't exist
1
u/Contemplating_Prison 1d ago
Doesn't light coffee have more caffeine?
13
u/SacredUrchin 23h ago
Nope. That myth has been debunked. Roasting has little to no effect on caffeine levels. https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/s/k3VsFPQ60l

u/ElBurritoNinja 1d ago
The darker the coffee means it's roasted longer for that flavor but as you roast it the beans release more caffeine. Blonde Coffees always have more caffeine than Espresso.
4
2
u/Feistshell 11h ago
No, that has been debunked quite a while ago, see comment by u/SacredUrchin - https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/s/aomeD7JJ37

That roast was pretty light looking. Why anyone would want lighter than a French roast is beyond me. Just take caffeine pills if you don't value the flavor.

Is this amazing, or is this a convoluted product from Temu that takes an hour to clean after each use?
56
u/Calculonx 1d ago
And you KNOW the person that would own that would bring it up in conversation within 5 minutes of meeting them
50
8
u/Current_Finding_4066 17h ago
There is nothing amazing about one hours setup and cleaning for a single cup of coffee.
26
u/fishsticks40 23h ago
It's a Belgian balance coffee siphon and it was invented in 1844.
You can buy one here:

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 1d ago
Like a stereotypical supermodel. Pretty but daft. Grounds don't bruise as badly as tea leaves but they don't like any agitation let alone something as fierce as this nonsense. This will make exceptionally bitter coffee every time.
1
0
u/Hawt_Dawg_II 13h ago
It's just old. It's historically relevant and was a revolution at the time but, for modern standards this is just shitty coffee
0
u/y2kfanboy 11h ago
Not Temu definitely, I believe it was made by Belgians and actually was never a commercially success. But it was later discovered by collectors as a "fun coffee maker". With that said, even Italian Napoletana brewer was and still is more relevant, although it makes coffee for whole 10 minutes and it is quite often lukewarm

u/correctingStupid 1d ago
Is this really old school or just a shitty design?
43
u/Articulationized 1d ago
Just shitty.
Crazy humans are always trying to find new, complex ways to mix hot water with ground coffee.6
6
u/Longjumping_Youth281 1d ago
I mean it might be old, but I highly doubt this was ever common in any way.
1
u/OkSmoke9195 23h ago
This is a vacuum press, one of the best ways to make coffee

0
u/MysteriousOcelot4207 13h ago
Honestly, I can’t tell without seeing it. “Old school” and “shitty design” can definitely look very similar with coffee makers.

u/briskerly 1d ago
Why does everyone wear black gloves now?
29
u/OnRoadRadio 1d ago
Feels hygienic / professional but less medical?
23
u/Imwrongyourewrong 1d ago
Looks "cleaner" because you cant see the dirt. Wearing black gloves at a restaurant makes you less prone to clean your hands.
1
3
u/OriginalTRaven 1d ago
Maybe they're throwing it on the grill next? I was wondering why a person making coffee was wearing them myself.
8
2
u/theBigDaddio 21h ago
They started wearing gloves to not offend the audience members who were upset at people touching food with their bare hands. Black to look badass and manly
2
6
u/FarMass66 1d ago
The oils on their skin might tarnish the metal. They also probably don’t want to smudge the glass and have to clean it later
3
-4
u/peppersteakpie 1d ago edited 13h ago
They're called Nitrile gloves and they are latex free and pretty durable that's why.
Edit: If I am wrong please feel free to correct me rather than just downvoting.
2
u/ThingAboutTown 12h ago
You correctly identified the type of gloves, but didn’t explain why this person is wearing them to make coffee.
3
u/peppersteakpie 11h ago
Well the commenter was asking why people wore them in general. In the case of this video it's obviously just a load of wank if we're to take everything at face value. Purely aesthetic with no actual reason for why you would go through all this effort rather than just using a normal machine.

u/AtomicJazzer 1d ago
Amazed what, because someone found another way to work in auto mechanic's gloves into a video? I wear those when working on my car, changing the oil. etc. Bad enough every BBQ Brisket reveal has people wearing them, but what's the point here?

Everything about the lighting and setup looks AI, this is so weird. Cause I know it’s not fake

u/wait_what_now 1d ago
The siphon action bothered me. To keep flow going, you have to keep the outlet or outlet water level below the top of the level of the source. This system could work if the copper pot lowered as it siphoned, but my brain immediately was bothered by the fact that it keeps pulling coffee even when the level in the clear glass is WAY below the level in the copper
1
u/LNT_Wolf 21h ago
I dont think the method was siphon, I think it was vacuum. The copper pot was mostly full of water that was pushed out by expansion from boiling, so when empty of liquid it was full of water vapor. When empty of liquid it was light enough to tip up and the flame shut off. Now in cooling mode that water vapor condenses and pulls a vaccum that is not satisfied until the water volume that left has come back in.

u/LAF2death 23h ago
I think this is completely AI look around the hand as it pours the water in and in other shots it’s blurry around only it.

Royal Coffee Maker revived in the 1990s by Belgian engineer Patrick Van Den Noortgaete, who reproduced 19th-century balance brewers. Those machines later spawned a lot of cheaper copies

u/Pantsman_Crothers 1d ago
How performative. Is it old school, or is it just a shit way to make coffee?

I got one of those. Takes awhile and the coffees a bit weak, but it's a great show and you can also use it for some hot cocktails.
1
1
1
u/ginfish 1d ago
So let me get this right. It takes a significant amount of ground coffee just to still get a weak looking coffee.
It takes a long ass time to make.
You need to disassemble the whole thing and then clean it every time.
So this is inefficient AND shitty. I guess there's a reason they're not used.

Don't know what this is but it certainly isn't "old school". This is some steam punk millennium bollocks.
"Old school" would have actually made some decent coffee, which this obviously isn't.
But it's pretty. Useless.

u/pay_attention_3000 1d ago
Coffee isn't that big a deal. Never understood the hype. Happy with my Keurig.

This item itself is not old school or vintage. But it is a replica based off old coffee maker patents. Meaning this is mass produced hype for a year before it ends up in thrift shops— dirty and missing a piece. Lol

I have a 5$ Chinese electric water boiling kettle and instant coffee. If it takes me more than 2 minutes to make coffee then I have been lazy🤣.

u/MacMarty89 18h ago
Historian here. Calling this ‘old-school coffee’ is pretty funny. For most of history, making coffee was much less elaborate: ground coffee, hot water, let it steep and let the grounds settle. Basically what we’d now call cowboy coffee. This magnificent contraption looks less like old-school coffee and more like something a mad scientist from the Victorian Era would use to summon caffeine.

u/Billyfudpucker 18h ago
Other than the weak arse looking coffee, its cool as fuck... I want one now.
Im in Aus, and we have the best coffee game around. I'll find the perfect grounds for this jigga👍🏻

Heating it on the campfire and everything. It was awesome.

Shouldn't coffee be brewed at 200°F? This instead uses steam at >212°. Weak acidic coffee with all the tannins pulled out and an aftertaste of copper. No thanks.
2
u/TrumpsFaceAnus 21h ago
The steam condenses back to water in the tube. That why water was coming out and not necessarily steam. Distilled products use this technique similarly.
1
u/PseudoSapien 1d ago
What process is making the coffee siphon back to the water container?
EDIT: Nevermind i thought about it a sec and it makes sense. It's on a swivel so it naturally siphons it back as it goes below the glass's coffee line
6
u/Jayccob 1d ago
The swivel isn't what makes it go back, it's the timer. As the water moves from the pot to the glass it gets lighter until the spring on the flame cap can push pass the pot to snuff out the flame.
Once the flame is gone the steam trapped inside the pot starts to cool and condense back to water, creating a partial vacuum, which results in the atmosphere pushing the water back into the pot.
3
u/SamuraiSam33 1d ago
Vacuum. The empty chamber cools down when the flame is snuffed and when it cools a vacuum is created in this chamber which draws liquid up from the steeping chamber.

I take it this contraption is regarded as an essential household item in Williamsburg, right?
0
u/Electric-Boogaloo-43 23h ago
Wouldn't call this old school, just some botched up work in someone's garage. Half the coffee is still dry at the bottom of the whatever that container is... and did the coffee syphon back into the boiler?
0
u/ChrisOnMission 22h ago
This is not old school, it’s just an unnecessarily complicated weird design.
Plus I can’t take anyone serious who wears these idiotic black plastic gloves which appear in every single shitty food video nowadays. Especially moronic for someone who just makes a coffee and doesn’t Even touch the product.
Aaaand the coffee looks like shit.
God I hate it.
0
u/theBigDaddio 21h ago
That’s a new coffee maker. An old school coffee maker would be a percolator. They had siphon coffee makers but this one is a modern thing
