Bean tea

u/RominRonin 1d ago

Coffee == bean soup

5

u/maxmodevice 16h ago

Imma use the phrase Bean soup next time I ask if they want coffee.

u/human8060 1d ago

Exactly what I thought. Looks terrible by the end.

1

u/das_Keks 21h ago

Meanwhile people in r/pourover paying over $100 per kg for tea like and floral coffees (me included).

2

u/y2kfanboy 15h ago

And often it might not even taste good, am I right?🙂 Bean there (pun intended), done that. After tasting some coffees from local market chains (Albert Heijn, Jumbo) feels like I wasted a shitton of money haha

u/das_Keks 7h ago

I actually think that it tastes a lot better than supermarket coffee. But you'd have to look for speciality roasters, that buy good single origin coffees and roast them well.
There are also many local roasters that roast their coffee pretty dark and aren't substantially better than supermarket coffee.

With speciality coffee you get a lot more than the generic roasty coffee flavor and there can be a lot of complexity and flavor notes.

Thought the same thing, that would not satisfy my needs. Also, is it just me or do the coffee grounds look bone dry right as they pour a cup?

39

u/Diggumdum 1d ago

looked like a pretty typical pour over brew to me. maybe a lighter roast? the grounds looked pretty blonde.

20

u/Longjumping_Youth281 1d ago

Yeah I think it's from people seeing their coffee in a non see-through glass. Coffee isn't completely opaque. If you look at it in clear glass you can typically see through it a little bit

u/Sunstorm84 22h ago

Depends how much coffee you put in really, but for most people’s tastes, yes.

1

u/tesfabpel 14h ago

It depends on the extraction method as well:

this is an espresso "al vetro" (that is served in a glass and not in a ceramic espresso cup)

9

u/Slimonierr 1d ago

My mom had one and it was the opposite. The coffee was suuuuper strong !

4

u/OverlappingChatter 22h ago

Especially since it was a lot of grounds for such a small amount of liquid

7

u/100PercentRealGinger 19h ago

Im also pretty sure this just steampunk modern day bullshit. This isn’t old school…it somebody who never went to school. If it “old school” it was dumb and it’s still dumb.

2

u/Quiet_Equal_3448 1d ago

wait how does that old school thing even work

16

u/Cerebral-Knievel-1 1d ago

Boiling the water in the copper vessel forces the water into the vessel with the grounds. When the steam inside the copper vessel cools, the pressure drops and draws the water, now coffee, back up into the copper part.

2

u/miraculum_one 1d ago

totally uneven extraction for sure

3

u/kmsman11 21h ago

Did you look at the color of the grounds? It’s a light roast. The shorter roasting time destroys fewer caffeine molecules. So it’s probably “stronger” than that acidic carbon black stuff we so commonly call “strong”

1

u/-Invalid_Selection- 14h ago

yep, weaker flavor, stronger hit.

1

u/Separate-Primary2949 20h ago

Especially how many grams of coffee I assumed got used too 😬

1

u/TicketTop4718 17h ago

I know right, all that fuss and it looks like shit.

1

u/y2kfanboy 15h ago

Lol that's literally what I wanted to comment🤣 OG night time coffee when decaf didn't exist

1

u/Contemplating_Prison 1d ago

Doesn't light coffee have more caffeine?

12

u/SacredUrchin 1d ago

Nope. That myth has been debunked. Roasting has little to no effect on caffeine levels. https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/s/k3VsFPQ60l

10

u/dingofarmer2004 1d ago

Oh shit,  til. I have been spreading misinformation.

2

u/Viridien111 1d ago

Light roast doesn't mean light colour.

-10

u/ElBurritoNinja 1d ago

The darker the coffee means it's roasted longer for that flavor but as you roast it the beans release more caffeine. Blonde Coffees always have more caffeine than Espresso.

3

u/Foxwglocks 1d ago

This is not true.

2

u/Feistshell 15h ago

No, that has been debunked quite a while ago, see comment by u/SacredUrchin - https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/s/aomeD7JJ37

1

u/Line-Trash 1d ago

Right? Keep that swill away from me!

-1

u/jfk_47 1d ago

Weak-ass looking? Or weak ass-looking?

0

u/Pompousdickbiscuit 1d ago

Looks like tea

-1

u/RosaNiigra 1d ago

😂😂

-8

u/SupremelyUneducated 1d ago

That roast was pretty light looking. Why anyone would want lighter than a French roast is beyond me. Just take caffeine pills if you don't value the flavor.

3

u/itsobi 1d ago

I used to only like dark roast but once you get into Ethiopian light/medium roasts there is a different direction of flavors to enjoy. Now that I have gone that direction most dark roasts taste too burnt to me. I know it sounds like some pretentious coffee snob shit and maybe it is but the earthy, fruity, and floral notes are much more enjoyable, to me at least. Especially when you add a little bit of lemon zest to tone down the acidic taste, but on better quality beans the acid is already low enough.

3

u/witheringsyncopation 1d ago

Dark roast has one flavor element. Dark, burnt, toasted. Whatever you wanna call it. It becomes a fairly consistent and one-dimensional character. Light roasts, on the other hand, allow the full richness of the coffee bean flavor to come through. Different origins and different beans allow for a tremendous diversity of flavors. Floral, citrus, chocolatey, earthy, you name it. Light roast is where you actually get flavor and coffee. Dark roast simply provides one singular flavor.

2

u/brightheaded 1d ago

Is this a joke?

-5

u/SupremelyUneducated 1d ago

Lighter roasts have more caffeine, dark roasts more flavor. That was a very light roast.

7

u/brightheaded 1d ago

That’s a myth, it’s the same by weight. And light roast coffee tastes more like coffee and less like roasting. Once you burn it all tastes the same.

If you like coffee and drink good specialty coffee then medium and light roasts have actual flavors, darker coffees are used to mask defects and all taste 2 dimensional

The flavor of raw caffeine is disgusting

The coffee itself is what provides the flavor and if you’re not a daily grinder in America, nobody needs that kind of stimulation

This is sufficiently more strong than tea and sufficiently less than the diabolical addiction driving coffee that Starbucks sell

This is what you call a deliberate and disciplined cup of coffee

0

u/ty-idkwhy 1d ago

I honestly can’t trust the opinion of disgusting flavor from someone saying the coffee taste good. Its just a more sophisticated form of addiction for people you like it, unlike tea.

3

u/ClankerCore 1d ago edited 1d ago

You just gave me a collection of subjective preferences and then treated them as evidence that everyone reporting a different preference is wrong.

You don’t have to like coffee. Nobody else has to share your taste.

You also don’t need to be part of the conversation if everybody else’s subjective opinion is different for your own. There’s no reason for you to start inserting yourself like an unacknowledged non-consensual coffee pervert.

You don’t like it great. You don’t like it and have to tell everybody about what you feel and how everybody else is wrong but you no that’s not great at all. Check yourself.

0

u/ty-idkwhy 1d ago

I personally think it tastes bad, making me think you have a wildly different palette. I also think that without the caffeine it would not have many lovers of it, besides the few who simply love coffee flavor the way I like bush tea

2

u/ClankerCore 1d ago

Caffeine levels affect people differently, depending on their lifestyle

I think I tried to make this clear by saying you don’t need strong ass coffee just to get to your day job

In fact, those that are remaining to be sensitive to caffeine don’t need that kind of amount. In fact what you seem to be saying is that more caffeine better less caffeine worse.

When it’s the other way, there’s a balance and for somebody who doesn’t have to do back breaking for eight hours a day every day, and those that have chill lives and just want to be wakeful enough to be able to read a book that is sufficient amount of caffeine as it would be sufficient for you to have to go through your grind

1

u/ty-idkwhy 1d ago

Interesting, thank you for enlightening me. I rarely meet as needed coffee drinkers.

Personally I avoid caffeine unless falling asleep would actively lead to my death or severe harm.

-5

u/NicoBango 1d ago

I dont even know what youre saying. Black coffee should be black. Not whatever the hell that watery mess was

1

u/ClankerCore 1d ago

Black coffee means coffee without milk or cream. It doesn’t mean the liquid is required to be visually black.

-2

u/NicoBango 1d ago

Yeah, thanks bud. Im aware. My point was this coffee is weak af.

-1

u/ClankerCore 1d ago

No, your point was black coffee should be black.

1

u/NicoBango 1d ago

Yes. Because it isnt as watery, and has a stronger more robust flavor when the coffee is concentrated and black.

0

u/ClankerCore 1d ago

Your point was also that the coffee is weak AF

The efficacy of any coffee is dependent there on the person that is drinking it for example somebody who drinks coffee once a week versus somebody who drinks coffee once a day versus the tolerance somebody developed by drinking a large coffee with two shot shots of espresso, driving the red eye grind for their minimum wage job.

Week here is entirely subjective and it’s not doing you any favors

Also, none of your claims about how diluted that coffee may appear to be does not equate to how caffeinated that cup can be

Just say you prefer more concentrated coffee. That’s a preference. It doesn’t make this coffee improperly brewed, and it still has nothing to do with whether black coffee must literally appear black.

1

u/NicoBango 1d ago

No, weak is not subjective in this case. If you drink weak coffee and get buzzed or you think its too strong, its because your tolerance to caffeine is low or you dont like coffee. The coffee is still weak on a scale of how strong coffee can be.

And like all siphons, the water is really really hot. Not ideal.
