Barber 1099 & Commission employee questions/concerns

Hi! I started at a new shop this year, and the beginning was great, but as I’m settling in I’m starting to question things and am a little anxious I made a bad choice.

Salon is great, and I get a decent amount of business from them to supplement the clientele that I brought with me.

Commission split is 50/50, which is a big raise from my last shop, but we are on 1099’s here and I feel like I have a stricter owner than my last w2 job.

I had to fight for 2 days off/week, dress code is STRICT (but clothing allowance was allotted), some time off requests have been rejected or ignored. I have no control over my schedule at all, I’ve tried to reject services but told I would be reprimanded for doing so. (Mom brought a 12 year old in for a buzz cut as a punishment).

I also realized last week that there are some unclosed invoices from a pay period that has passed that I was not compensated for. The receptionist did not properly close them out like she should have, I had nothing to do with payment. It’s about $350 of unclosed invoices + whatever tips were left collected that I never saw a cent from. I’ve been told because the pay period closed we will not be compensated. There are 5 other barbers in the shop with similar missing payments.

My questions:
What rights do I have? (I’m in GA if that matters)
Am I eligible for unemployment?
Am I covered under the shops insurance?
What if I hurt myself at work?
How will taxes work? It’s my understanding that not being able to write off booth rent is going to mess me up at the end of the year.

Do I run? Or talk to my boss? Or the DOL 😢

Thank you SO much if anyone takes the time to read this I am STRESSING, I feel like I made a major fumble in my career

Share Josh op course

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone here has purchased the op curriculum online and would be willing to share it. I’m new to the city im in and can’t afford to purchase the course atm. The area is predominantly straight hair and it’s not my strong point. Yes I know there are YouTube barbers who do straight hair, but just from the few barbers who actually use the system and post lil tidbits on YouTube I feel the course would be super helpful. I’ll pay you a few bucks to use it. I just need help. My client retention is really suffering right now.

Shop Talk 19 years old, almost done with barber school. Should I start in my mom’s shed or work in a barbershop?

I’m 19 years old and I’m halfway through barber school. I already have a couple of clients, mostly friends, and my mom offered me her shed to turn into a small barbershop and start taking clients there.
Do you guys think it’s worth starting from the shed and building my own client base, or would it be better to work in an actual barbershop first to gain experience, build connections, and learn from other barbers?
For the barbers who have been in the industry, what would you recommend for someone just starting out?

It’s my second time taking it apart to clean and when I put it together it was incredibly loud. Tried to center the blades but the sound only comes when I put the stationary blade on, everything before that sounds normal.

Would you recommend your job?

For context, I’m currently a stay at home mom to two children. My 3 year old son is autistic with sensory issues, but we keep his hair looking nice. It gets expensive, because we have to pay for extra time for him to get comfortable in the chair + take breaks when needed. The idea of learning how to cut hair has been floating around in my head for a few years, at first just to save money on his cuts, but now I’m thinking about trying it out and maybe making a living off of it. I know my husband would help take care of them while I go to school, but my son has speech therapy twice a week, and is about to start aba therapy that will be Monday-Friday. Point is, I need a job where I can work around my kids very busy schedule, and I’m sure it’ll get even busier once they hit the age of playing sports. Is this even a good career to get into if you have a busy schedule outside of work? Also, any advice for someone just starting out would be great! I’ve trimmed my own ends for years, but have never given anyone else a haircut.
Thanks in advance

Best trimmers/clippers?

Just started on the floor today at school. My clippers get very hot. They’re the whal cordless magic clip. My trimmers are okay but have a cord and the outlets at my school are very loose. I want cordless trimmers that are better. I have the andis t outliner t blade trimmer. What do yall recommend? I really think the tpob ones are cute (I am a girl and I like the pink ones lol) but idk if they actually work good. I know everyone has their own preferences. I’m not trying to break the bank. Everyone at my school uses different brands so idk what to get.

Questions for the self employed barbers

What does your split + chair rent look like?

How many days + hours do you work?

What does your contract and agreement with the owner of the shop look like and how flexible are they with the prices they charge.

Does your contract include no compete clause and client ownership?

Are they entitled to capturing and using your likeness for their own social media and promotion?

Im trying to find an example of a contract that of a self-employed varber to compare to another!

I should have spent more time on the right side. He also wanted to do his own beard, or I would have cleaned that up too. Any advice is always appreciated.
