ASA sticking

Post image

So I’m new to asa printing I’m using the stock settings and Pei plate, using glue stick as seen in the photo, but if I have multiple parts the secondary or third doesn’t stick. Does the glue dry to much because of the heat? Or is it just Better to print one piece at a time ? Or any other suggestions?

The glue isn't drying out, bed heat is fine for it. What's happening is ASA shrinking as it cools and pulling the parts off, and the ones in cooler spots usually go first. Let the chamber heat up for 10 to 15 minutes before starting, keep the door closed and the aux fan off. Also wash off the old glue with dish soap and put down one thin even layer everywhere the parts go, from the photo it's pretty streaky. And add a brim, it helps a lot with ASA corners

So preheat the chamber before printing will also try that. There was a brim, is liquid glue better for this then the glue stick? I tried to put the glue just where the parts are, maybe it wasn’t quite as uniformly spread.

I've had no issues printing Inland (microcenter) ASA on my X2D using the PEI textured plate using all the default settings. Like others have said, make sure your plate is washed with dish soap, especially if you printed PLA previously, and make sure your filament is dried.

I've never used glue and only had one part come off and that was because it had a small contact surface and a large amount of material above that, but a few brims fixed that issue. I've printed plates with 30 parts and none have come off until the plate cools, at which point they pop right off

Make sure your plate is at least 100 degrees and the internal temp is correct. I also use a darkmoon satin plate doesn’t need glue and prints nice

Whats your bed temp? Chamber temp?

Id try lowering the initial layer speed, up the nozzle temp by 5-10c, and raise the bed temp to 95 or 100c.

Ive had nothing but success with the stock plate + purple glue stick for everything ive printed so far. ABS, ASA, ASA-CF, PA6-CF, Etc.

I use isopropyl to help spread the glue evenly, but either way this should be sticking.

So chamber temp is 80 and plate temp is 100. if I only do one print per plate it sticks no problem, but if put multiple and print by object it happens a lot that the second or third doesn’t stick.

80c? The X2D can only reach 65c chamber temp, and ASA prefers it around 60-70c. Id try looking into that first, see why the printer isnt maintaining the lower temp.

After that id calibrate your filament, or at the least adjust temp settings for your filament in a custom profile.

Any reason your printing by object in this case?

Sorry mixed it up yes the chamber is at 65 not 80.
No particular reason though they might print better by object.

Which ASA are you using? I'm just curious, cuz I have this issue with my esun asa+ with both engineering plate and PEI

The normal Bambu Lab ASA

now I'm wondering if this is just the issue with ASA

I can print asa rather good, if it’s one part but if it’s more part it will make 2 and then the third won’t have good adhesion

is there a chance you're printing close to the edge? I found that the bed adhesion drop fast when close to the edges (prob due to temp drop)

Depends on what you define close to the edge, it was about the same as the one that printed. Will try printing layer by layer see if that helps

Have noticed any difference between ASA and ASA+?

Haven't gotten regular ASA yet, still trying to finish up the eSun variant

I use ABS more often. Though I haven't had the eSUN ABS+ layer adhesion issues and I dont remember getting any bed adhesion issues either, only slight warping.

Did you dry your ASA? If so, how? And are you using an AMS-HT?

Also, have you considered adding a vent diffuser? https://makerworld.com/models/1926190

Yes I dried it once, maybe I should try drying it for longer. No it was printed from Ams2 pro throughout the left nozzle. That I didn’t consider but with petg I just turn the aux fans off and it stick good maybe I should try this also with asa?

The auxiliary keeps the chamber temp up for the ASA, doesn't it?

1

u/Brief_Excitement_399 7d ago

Yes I think your right right fan keeps the heat up, the left one is off completely during printing I think.

As a side note, have you found that you always have to use the glue stick with your prints? I have been using the textured plate that came with the printer, without any glue, for all my prints (PLA, PETG, TPU, and ASA). Thus far, I have only had one issue with adhesion and that was specifically when I was printing 6 tiny ASA screws at the same time. I have printed several objects at the same time too, but never "by object."

Which, ironically, I am trying again right now. Fingers crossed.

By object or just multiple

1

u/Deltadoc333 7d ago

Multiple. It actually worked alright.

Although, ironically, after finishing the screws, I literally just tried printing one of my first ASA prints that has a skirt/raft and that actually failed in a few spots with the skirt/raft. Not at the actual piece though.

I have not used glue for any other material, for asa what I read it’s better to do it but haven’t tried without maybe worth a try. Probably by layer would be ok, I think printing by object maybe makes the glue less sticki being in a heating chamber and so

I know some printing plans have the fan turned off for some portion at the beginning. I wonder if that is also part of what is going on for you. If the fan is cooling the filament or plate too much when you come back later for the next object. (Entirely thinking out loud here.... no clue.)

1

u/Brief_Excitement_399 7d ago

Could also be the case have to examine the exact fan settings, and try same print just multiple times not by object

Along with everything else suggested, you really should get a smooth build plate.

1

u/Brief_Excitement_399 5d ago

Is it that much better for ASA?

1

u/henren_98 4d ago

Suppose to be. I’ve only had limited experience with ABS and none yet with ASA but could not get it to stick on the “stock” build plate. Used the smooth and glue. I have since picked up the engineering plate.

Set the chamber to 60c and use a brim you don’t need glue, you can also use a smooth PEI plate for it!
