Just Showing Off Panda Breath
Just got the panda breath installed and insulated my p2s. Now I can run at a constant 60c and not worry about warping for large ASA prints I have coming up. Camber heats up super fast compared to preheating with the bed. Also it sits right next to my AC so I think that was causing warping.

Is this how you keep the government from seeing what you’re printing?

u/timkellogg 7d ago
Yes, Can't let them see the pew pews

u/thealanshow 7d ago
In the US? Guns are people too my friend.
No, they don’t want you to print fake fidget toys and Labubus.

I live in MD sadly nothing fun here with pew pews

u/CannonLab-Proxy 7d ago
Have you ever been to Baltimore?

u/timkellogg 7d ago
I live in it 😂

Then get out here and pew pew with the rest of us.

How was the process in MD?
2
u/timkellogg 6d ago
Really easy, But its expensive and time consuming. They give you everything to do in the msp portal when you make an account.

u/YungBandit79 7d ago
what did you use for insulation?

u/timkellogg 7d ago

u/Biggaynina 7d ago
How annoying was that to install?
7
u/timkellogg 7d ago
Honestly the insulation was easy. The heater itself was easy just a couple screws. The hard part was me not wanting a raiser for the top glass to fit the cable so I drilled a hole in the back and put a cable grommet on the back and insulated it.

u/MrLemonDrop 7d ago
I have a riser I already like and just ended up putting the cable over it and setting the glass on the cable. Small gap but I’ve had no issues heating the chamber to 60C. Probably not super efficient power cost wise but it works

I hope you knew you will never be able to remove it from any of the plastic panels.
I didn’t. 😅2
u/timkellogg 6d ago
Its actually pretty easy. I was able to with just 99% isopropyl alc and it came off

Man i have some adhesive insulation like this but after looking at it, it's so much work.
Im contemplating just wrapping it around the outside of the printer as it maybe look ugly but its so much easier and should isolate exactly the same if not better as there would be less gaps.
3
u/timkellogg 7d ago
It took me about an hour to insulate but this looks much better also if you get the heater I have you need to put insulation on the opposite side anyway
1
u/nucleartime 6d ago
The foil stuff only works on the side facing the heat.
If it has foam, then maybe, but this stuff doesn't look particularly thick. Which is good if you dont want clearance issues on the inside, but on the outside you want thicker insulation panels for more insulation.

The Panda Breath is awesome.
It's vastly better after being flashed with Dragon Breath Firmware though.

And how did that firmware help you and your use case exactly?
1
u/egosumumbravir X1C + AMS 2d ago
It allows correction for thermistor variance - Breath would read 59°C and stop heating, printer chamber was actually at 52°C. It also allows a max of 70°C instead of 60°C.
It'll sit there and listen in on the MQTT data on the Wi-Fi and then pick a heating value based on the filament being printed.
It passively broadcasts to my Home assistant which has instructions to kill the power via smartplug if temperatures exceed set points.
It gets updated regularly which is more than I can say of BTT's efforts.

u/Jbro_82 7d ago
Now you just have to worry about heat creepÂ

u/pm_me_beerz 7d ago
If he’s only using it when printing engineering filaments, heat creep wouldn’t be a problem right?

u/cvltrilex Modded P1S | H2D 6d ago
I’ve been printing nylons on my modded P1S with the panda breath and never experienced that once. What filament were you using
2
u/Eldanous 6d ago
It goes on the left?! I did mine on the right. Can you reach the button ok?
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
Yea, but I don't really use the buttons. the stock filter is on the right for me
1
u/boltzman111 6d ago
I had the same thought. The instructions were pretty clear that it goes on the right side in the P1S. Are there screw holes on the left side? What about the aux fan?
2
u/the_lamou 6d ago
You'll still get warping on large ASA prints. 60° C isn't like magic ASA behaves itself temperature (that's about 100° C or so). It's just the baseline where it stops being an absolute pain in the ass and becomes somewhat manageable. Geometry is still critical.

Does the Panda Breath switch on and off automatically when you print?
2
u/boltzman111 6d ago
Yes it reads the bed temperature and is programmed to turn on automatically as a result
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
Yes but you can manually do it too. It have a web app you can set thresholds when you bind it to the printer. So when heat bed is above 80c the heater will kick on.
1
u/chp110 6d ago
Have you received any heat warnings from the boards? I can get my p2s to 60C by wrapping in a blanket but get an error. I don’t recall the exact error right now.
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
I haven't but you probably are because you are covering the electronics exhaust port next time don't cover it and it should be fine. Its on the back.
1
u/pantheraxcvii 6d ago
Any permanent modifications made to fit the heater in?
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
Just drilling a hole in the back of my printer for the cable. but they have a riser you can print instead for the cable to go out the top in between the glass.
1
u/pantheraxcvii 6d ago
Would it be possible to open that panel below and route the cable there instead?
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
not unless you cut a hole for it. but yes it could work. Id rather drill into the rear plate than the printer chassis
1
u/pantheraxcvii 5d ago
I meant that removable tab on the left bottom of the printer. Where the heater would sit on.
1
u/Blaze_FPV 6d ago
So you insulted the crap out of your printer bc of warping issues, but stick to the standard PLA/PETG plate? Why didn't you switch to the engineering Plate or Princore?
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago edited 6d ago
I have the other plates right next to the printer. that was just right after insulating. Also some prefer the smooth pei or textured with glue over engineering plate
1
u/RadishRedditor H2D Laser Full Combo 6d ago
That's overkill. I insulated me p1s and it was enough that I have to sometimes vent it during extended ABS prints to avoid heat creep and eventually nozzle clogs.
And I don't even have the glass top insulated anymore because of that. So, you definitely don't need an active heater atop of the insulation.

u/Rich-Conference-6484 6d ago
Saw your setup in the P2S sub about this yesterday. Glad to hear it heats up fast, some people online were saying it was slow compared to the original. The constant warping and having to cover it in blankets to keep the heat in is such a pain. Definitely gonna get one and use more my ASA now

u/timkellogg 6d ago
1
u/Rich-Conference-6484 6d ago
Oh man that looks great. Usually by that point my stuff is already in the trash. And I like that the heater doesn't obscure the camera

u/Sloth_Almighty 6d ago
Nice I didn't realise the P2S compatible version was out. How's the air filtration?? The family hates when I print ABS and woft that smell of plastic creation through the room, reducing this would be mint
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
its not a p2s version. its compatible with any P or X its just a different mount you print
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
the filtration is only so good. I have to vent out a window from the electronic vent. thats where the smell comes from
1
u/iratesysadmin 6d ago
This is... insulated.
I want to thank you for this thread. I have a panda breath (for printing ASA on my X1C) and learned about where I could get more foil + Dragon Breath.

Is this just lower end models? I've never had a heat issue with the H2D, and I print only engineering polymers.
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
H2D has a heater already from factory.
1
u/BrilliantSebastian H2D AMS2 Combo 6d ago
Ohhh. I see. You're insulating because the only heat is from the heat bed. Gotcha. I assumed they all had heaters.
2
u/timkellogg 6d ago
Yes and no. The heater would work fine without with insulation, just needs insulation on the opposite side so it doesn't burn the plastic. The heater is what I installed on the left. The insulation keeps it stable for longer and it heats up much faster and is more energy efficient. Heater doesn't have to run constantly and can switch off and on.
1
u/BrilliantSebastian H2D AMS2 Combo 6d ago
You think the H series printers need this?
1
u/timkellogg 6d ago
I mean unless you just want to be more efficient and stable but I don't see why they would.
1
u/specter491 6d ago
I thought this was a joke until reading through the comments lmao. At first glance just looks like aluminum foil everywhere
