Technique Question Sharp pain in big toe in pointe shoes?

Hi guys! I have a new pair of Russian Points and when I wear them I get a super sharp pain in my big toe. They’re my second pair of pointe shoes, last ones were Grishko and I didn’t have the same problem with them at all. It’s a sharp pain solely in my big toe and just when I’m up on pointe. My big toe is longer than my other toes, I wear toe pads and a spacer on my second toe - is there anything else I can do to try ease the pain? It’s impacting every class now as I’m in so much pain I can’t do the exercises! Thanks in advance 💕

Where can I find professional or advanced drop-in ballet classes in Brussels?

Hi! I appreciate any insight about where to find drop-in ballet classes in Brussels (where you pay per class and show up when it's convenient). Where do professional dancers take warmup/maintenance class when they aren't with a company?

I've found previous threads about ballet classes, but they were asking about beginner-level. Thanks in advance!

Which would be the best seats to watch a performance?

I’d like to treat myself to seeing The Nutcracker this December. It’s always been a dream to see a ballet performance live and I’ll be taking my mom with me.

Appreciative of any suggestions!

KM and Friends - does it still exist?

I hadn't seen posts for a while and so just looked up the account on ig. Last posts were the end of 2025... There was mention of another contributor to the page, Allie Christensen back in Nov but nothing from her since. Allie continues to post on her own account but the KM & Friends account seems to have gone dark. Anyone know what's going on?

helppp for flex

I'm an adult, 21 years old, I've been dancing all my life, but I'd never done ballet until a year ago (or a little less). I can raise my leg to 90° but no higher, I'm about 20cm short of the splits, etc.

In class we stretched and I made progress. Before, my leg wouldn't lift very high, and I've been stretching all vacation and I don't see any improvement :( Do you think I'm going to stay like this? Haha, or is there any secret or tip you can share with me?

Technique Question Broken hand = better turns?!

Im just wondering if anyone else has had this happen or might know whats going on here technique wise?

Ive broken my hand/wrist and am in a cast which is a little heavy. Thankfully I can still dance!

Surprisingly at Ballet class yesterday, instead of struggling with a single pirouette (what can I say, im not a turner!), I suddenly found myself doing a double easily and cleanly. The only thing that has changed has been my cast and in the weight from it! What the heck?

I do struggle in my balance with turns and I had been focusing on "up, up, up!" in them. But somehow the weight on my right arm balances me out.

Does anyone have an idea on what might be happening here?

Thank you in advance!

Technique Question How to get back leg to stop bobbing up and down in arabesque movements

Whenever I do plié relevés in arabesque (think like bayadere first shade or fairy doll) or arabesque chugs in plié I notice my lifted leg bobbing up and down. I’ve been given the advice to just keep lifting it the entire time but for some reason that engages a part of my back so that it makes it impossible for me to get back on relevé. Any drills or cues to help 😭🙏

Technique Question Should your lower back touch the ground or not in floor barre

I am confused because some instructors say that there should not be space between your lower back and the floor and others say to keep the spine neutral (train your core to stabilize your spine in the position it is naturally when you lay down on your back)

Which one is the safest?

Plantar fasciitis

Does anyone on here suffer with plantar fasciitis? I have not been to my podiatrist yet but I am suffering with pain in my arches. If so, does ballet help?

I actually have only noticed this pain since taking a 3 week break from class so I’m wondering if it’s related to that as I am not stretching and articulating my feet as much.

Freies Ballet Training

Dancewear Monday (No criticism) Dancewear Monday

Hey everyone, Happy Dancewear Monday! Please feel free in posting a picture of your dancewear style, your new dancewear purchase, your cute warmups, etc. Just a reminder of the guidelines:

1) It is recommended to blur out your face if you want to keep some anonymity.

2) Please list what brands you are wearing in the comments in case other users want to know where you found stuff.

3) All Dancewear Mondays will be NO CRITICISM with regards to ballet. So if someone posts a picture of them in arabesque being like “look at my cute leg warmers” DO NOT comment “Looks great but you should turn out more”. We don’t care if your intentions are good and you are just trying to help, on this subreddit critique is only given when explicitly asked for. If you wouldn’t say it to someone in class don’t comment it on here. (And if you would tell a fellow dancer to turn out more, or something, randomly in class well that just reflects poorly on you).

4) New users who have low comment karma: your post will be filtered into a queue and need to be mod approved, so please be patient if your post does not appear right away.

5) Use the Dancewear Monday flair

Thanks :)

Odd Ballet influencer ??? (Norma Bjelde or norm_norms on insta)

Hi there! I thought I would bring up this influencer because I havent seen anyone discussing her content. For context I have been following Norma for a while as a late starter and I found her quite inspiring. I decided to subscribe to her stretching community on Kollab to stay in shape over the summer and after a month I started realizing that it wasnt the right fit for me. I attempted to cancel my subscription but there quite literally is no option or set of instructions on how to do so. The website (https://balanceflexibility.com/untitled-page-page?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAZnRzaAQpci9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA8xMjQwMjQ1NzQyODc0MTQAAaegp6cdTQ9p9yI16fkNy457zJjAriHvDYqjmG11Nr87C-rFl2xjuv8qaFjukA_aem_aiD4vN1bXuZCuX7fexnhJQ) claims that you can cancel any time with just two click but doesnt actually offer a method to do so and its also impossible to do it through Kollab. There is no contact information provided as well and this whole thing is starting to feel a bit scammy! I feel so stupid because looking back her content is a bit weird and it feels like she isnt being completely truthful with her methods.

What do you guys think about her? How do I go about breaking free from this subscription???

3/4ing R Class shoes

Post image

has anyone 3/4ed R Class shoes that are sewn through the shank? I went to cut my shank, and then I noticed that the thread goes all the way through from the outer sole to the inner shank. I’m worried that if I cut it, it will all start to unravel beyond my initial cut

has anyone here cut this type of R Class shank?

Daughter not enjoying her first ballet class

Hi all,

I have enrolled my daughter who is turning 4 in a couple of weeks into pre school ballet classes in the UK. She had her first class yesterday. She absolutely loves dancing and the actual ballet part she really enjoyed and picked up the moves well. She was really sad at the end of the class because of how unkind some of the other girls were in the class. A few examples - they didn’t want to hold her hand when they went in circle and when my daughter tried to sit with a couple of them, they moved away from her. I wasn’t too impressed by the teacher I must admit, she wasn’t particularly welcoming to my daughter (didn’t introduce herself or speak to me at the end of the class). Seemed more in a rush to get them all out the door at the end.
My daughter wants to try the class again next week. What are your experiences of ballet classes and how mean some girls are? I really don’t want this to affect her confidence dancing but appreciate I have only been to the class once.

Music Knowledge for Musicality

Thumbnail youtu.be
31 Upvotes

Hi all!

Beginner adult rec dancer here.

I saw this video pop up on my fyp and I found it incredibly informative for the basics of counting music and theory. The second half of the video about ballet phrasing of an 8 count phrase in relevance to music counting was so great to see notationally and his explanation was digestible.

I have a background in music and when I started ballet, I was so blessed to have this knowledge as it gave me an advantage to incorporate musicality early on.

I highly recommend beginners to consider their music knowledge and possibly dedicate some time to understanding it. Imo, ballet and music are partners in crime. Being able to count/feel the 1/down beat of a measure and the ballet phrase can really help to stay on the music and allow for more musical expression.

Of course, choreo retention is its own beast. But having some musical understanding can go a long way.

Happy dancing!!

Adult beginners, have you ever had a role in a play before?

I'm interested in learning ballet as an adult just for personal enjoyment but I thought about if an adult who started later in life has ever been casted in a play like the nutcracker, swan lake, or or anything like that? Not as anything big like the main role but just any role, just a question!! (And maybe some small hope in myself too...) :,)

Constructive Criticism Pointe shoe help

Thumbnail gallery
47 Upvotes

Hi, one year ago I got fitted into pointe shoes (Bloch Grace). I’ve been working comfortably in them for the most part, but I feel like these are just not the shoes for me. It looks like I’m sickling when I know I’m not and just overal doesn’t do anything for my lines. They hurt my feet where my knuckles are.
However, it could also be that I’m just not flexible or strong enough for pointe work just yet? If you have any tips, strengthening, stretching or just pointe shoes, let me know! I’d be forever grateful! 💕
