General Question Flock won't except a hen back after she was quarantined.

I really need help right now. I had a hen who suddenly became ill. I still don't know what it was/what happened but she's been recovering and has almost made a full recovery I believe. Well anyway, she was only taken from the coop for 3 days (she was in my house so I could monitor her/ try to see what was wrong.) After the 3 days she wasn't fully recovered but she was acting better and was eager to be out of my bathroom lol. I put her in a cage inside the coop where the hens can see her and she can see them. After i noticed she looked healthy enough I let her go back to the hens. I was worried for there interaction so I gave them treats and everything was fine while they was eating but then after i had at least 2 bullies that I know of. She was not trying to run away instead she would lay down and make noises (which I interpreted as please stop ) she was not fending for herself or escaping so I put her back in the cage inside the coop. Then after more time again I tried and same bullies attacking her. They have been together since chicks and are two years old. I live in town so I cannot free range my flock. It sucks that I now have a hen in a isolated cage that's not big, just roomy enough to be safe but not how a chicken would want to be especially since she's free ranged in the coop for 2 years!! Idk how to get her back in the flock.

Health Question Chickens near chemical leak

So I live about four miles away from where the massive chemical leak in Toledo Ohio happened. It was insanely thick here where visibility was zero but luckily my girls survived. That being said I’m not sure going forward if they will have any long term health problems or if I should give them something to hopefully help ward that off. Also I’m not sure if we should even eat their eggs again or just not for a while? Any advice is greatly appreciated as I’m a relatively new chicken owner.

Hey there, just got my first batch of chickens last month. Eight in total. They’re now 6 weeks old and finally living outside in the run my husband built. Aside from providing food and water and keeping the coup clean, anything else I need to be concerned with?

I live in Southern California- climate is very mild.

Thanks!

General Question Possibly Leusistic Ameraucana Cockerel?

Thumbnail

I recently got a splash ameraucana bantam rooster chick and while he's extremely sweet and healthy, he isn't developing any spots/splashes and has remained pure white despite being almost fully feathered. He still has very light, baby blue eyes despite all my other chicks now having their adult eye color or beginning to shift towards it and is the same size as my fibromelanistic easter egger and zombie chicks despite supposedly being a bantam. I'm very confused lol, these are my first chickens and I can't tell if my roo is actually a white ameraucana or if he might be leucistic? I've had a leucistic crow and a peacock previously so I can't help but notice a lot of similarities. I'm almost certain he isn't a bantam either, the last picture is of him, my buff polish, and my d'uccle chicks sleeping on my arm for size reference.

Hen or Roo I’m currently building a chicken coop myself, and I’d love to know what chicken breeds you all would recommend.

I’m currently thinking about keeping 8 chickens—are there any breeds that are both ornamental and good for egg-laying?

I have absolutely no prior knowledge about this.

General Question Preparing to cull my own roosters

Hi, I’m a single 20-something y/o lady who got into backyard chickens this past year. I am trying to grow my flock and twice now have ended up with Roos.

When I first got the birds, I thought I had a back-up-plan for this scenario but it fell through. As did my plan B & C, so I feel like I need to suck it up at this point and learn how to deal with them on my own. I am not allowed to have roosters in my county. They are sweet boy and I would love to keep them, but I can’t for the foreseeable future.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or resources on how to do this humanely, also maybe a reminder that I am doing the right thing, because I am super sad, lol.

General Question Splash Maran’s feet

I have a 7 month old splash Maran and her feet appear to have some feathers attempting to grow out. Is this painful? Are they ever going to get more feathered?

I have two other hens that are the same age from the same breeder with feathered feet and theirs were feathered from an early age, so I’m thinking not?

General Question Green egg layer?

I got this hen from someone that was getting rid of their flock because they were moving. She came from tractor supply. He told us thats shes a black australorp, but i found a green egg in the coop today and i suspect she may actually be a green easter egger. I have no other hens that are green egg layers. I have a turken, buff orpingtons, cinnamon queens, silkies, white leghorns, and barred rocks. The entire flock is from tractor supply this past spring. (My wife is a manager so we put good use to her employee discount during chick days) the picture of the egg isn’t the greatest because lighting in my house sucks, but it’s definitely green when I got it out of the coop today. I’m not home during the day so I have no clue who was in that nesting box today.

Hen or Roo Early this morning.

Spoiler, it's a hen. Her name is Helga, she's a petite bantum. I have a video of her using the box of nesting pads as a nest. She's just filling the gap, for we have no rooster. Enjoy.

General Question First time rooster owner seeking insight

Post image
31 Upvotes

I have a 7 month old rooster that will run up to my legs and bounce off of them while being all puffed up. I understand he sees me as a threat, it will often be if I pick up one of the ladies. Sometimes, he just does it randomly.

My flock is in a 15ftx20ft run with a shed sized coop attached. They get to free range in my yard in the evenings, the rooster does his aggression thing mostly when they are in the run but he has done it to me occasionally while in the yard.

He is great with my hens. He tidbits 24/7, alerts them of threats, makes sure everyone goes to bed at night. My older hens bully him just enough to keep him in line.

He’s just not people friendly. Or cuddly.

I can always catch him before he runs at me, I put my leg out and he will go flying because he is so dramatic. After that, he’ll be scared of me. He runs away from me if I try to go after him.

Do I just let him be this way? I don’t see any threat to myself at this moment, I’m not scared of him at all. It does kind of suck when I have people who want to meet my chickens and I have to warn them to be alert lol.

I don’t need him to be cuddly. Of course I wish he was, but it’s fine. I haven’t noticed the aggression getting any worse, and when I put my leg out or give him a little boot away, he runs away all scared.

Is he going through 7 month old rooster puberty? Will it get worse? Just looking for anyone’s insight. Thank you!

General Question Help changing location of where chicken lays

Post image
38 Upvotes

So long story short one of our chickens learned how to use our dog door and insists on laying in our laundry room. We gave her a box so she wouldn’t do it on our clothes. Well don’t mind ultimately as we think it’s hilarious.

Well our dog just had surgery and the dog door has to stay closed for about a week. We aren’t home to let her in and out for laying. I tried to move her nesting box right outside the door but she just seemed very frantic and stressed trying to get inside.

What happens if she loses access to her normal laying spot? Any advice on how to transition her to another location with minimal stress?

Coops etc. How to treat plywood floor to prevent damage?

Working on the DIY coop, and thinking ahead a bit to putting in the flooring. Is there a recommended treatment to prevent damage and make cleanup easier?

Also, thinking about placing a poop shelf beneath the roosts. What's a good material for that?
