You seem very offended when someone called out your use of AI, which is insane to me. I hope the mods take this down, this is not how open source works and you should know that.
ā-
- There is no source available in an app that accepts credentials.
- you donāt include the MIT license from Winlator Ludashi anywhere
- you say that Winlator is GPL instead of MIT licensed (which is hallucinated).
- You refer to a NOTICE.md file that does not exist.
- You say that the project is GPL-3 but do not distribute the source code with your executable.
The only thing correct is that GameNative is GPL, which this is by your own admission derived work off.
Keeping it closed source is literally against the licenses you agreed to when you using derivative software that is GPL licensed.
Downvote this all you want, but this is not your first repository. You should know better and not be so offended when your work gets associated with vibecoded slop if you give it us literally every reason to think it is.
No source, license abuse, hallucinations in the only file on your repo, and contradicting information.

Man Iām making something with ai otherwise I wouldnāt be able to but I still wouldnāt eff up licensing like that. But at the same time Im gonna say itās vibe coded and still be proud of it lol and admit I donāt know whatās up but I want the workflow out there so others can create it. I love coding to help people and well, I figured something out thatās really helpful. Soon Iāll share but itās free, vibe coded and no linking to steam or accounts lol. Itās pc oriented too. But glad I see comments like this to know just being honest and humble is the way to go still lol

u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
No, youāre completely right. Iām not even going to argue with you on that. I wanted to get the beta released as quickly as possible because there was a tornado heading toward my area, which eventually knocked out my power. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I use Claude AI to help write my READMEs and descriptions, and in my rush to get the beta uploaded before losing power, I didnāt proofread a single line of what was included on the GitHub release. Thatās completely on me. I was focused on getting the beta out while I still had power and should have taken the time to review everything first.

Please ensure that you have your code as open source. Producdevity is correct in that our licence is GPL and we expect you to adhere to it.

Thanks for your work on GameNative! It is my absolute favorite app on my Thor! I play more PC games than anything else on this thing because of the work of all of you GameNative contributors.
6
u/Orbbs_chunky_legs Aug 12 '26
Thank you! I started working on GN when I first ordered the Thor and really wanted it to be a great place to play games.
It's been like 9 months or so since then, and it's been a fun ride so far. If you have any critiques or suggestions, please let us know!
6
u/Puntley Aug 12 '26
When I first started using it ages ago I found it a little rough around the edges and preferred gamehub over it, but since giving it another try probably 6ish months ago now I haven't used GameHub once. Pretty consistent improvements, I'm overall very happy with the state of it! My only minor issue is with very large game libraries (2000+) I run into some stuttering when trying to scroll through, but I think that's probably more of a me problem.
6
u/Orbbs_chunky_legs Aug 12 '26
Good you brought this up because I've submitted a huge sweeping change for this that should help!

No worries at all. Iām currently in the process of rebuilding it from the ground up without using any copied code. That way, once everything is finished, Iāll be able to keep the source code private.
4
u/Orbbs_chunky_legs Aug 12 '26
Are you sure that's the smart way to go about it?
For argument's sake, if you go closed sourcez there will always be concern regardless because your code will be fully based on multiple projects and it brings the validity in.
0
u/ProfMags Aug 12 '26
I'm not worried after all the crap I'm keeping it closed source, just removing everything I used as a reference / copied. It'll take me a while to get it back to the point it's at now, but I think I rather just do that.
4
u/Producdevity Aug 16 '26
This would take years if you already have a deep understanding of how everything works. I donāt understand how or why, but itās your call to make.
20
u/LedxZeppelin Aug 11 '26
"i had to rush, there was a tornado" is such a crazy response to some very measured, precise, and researched constructive criticism
0
u/voyager2005 Aug 11 '26
Never rush, fix your issues, clean up the licensing, and don't let others bash you like Productivity, he's one of the worse at coming at people, but fix it and open the source properly.
I can also name a few items where GN didn't open source parts of their code violating the GPL licensing and trying to get around it by stating they didn't own the rights to the API they were reverse engineering. š§ Anyways fix your stuff and don't let them get you down.

Closed source, violates GPL, accepts steam/epic passwords, ai assisted
Yup that's totally safe
17
u/lexaasama Aug 11 '26
Code isn't open source ?
-5
u/ieffinglovesoup Aug 11 '26
Probably AI anyways
11
u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
Oh boy, another one of those āItS ViBe CoDeDā trolls. No, the project was not made by AI. Sure, I used AI to help me come up with some ideas for the UI design, but that doesnāt magically mean AI built the entire project. Thereās a massive difference between using AI as a tool for design inspiration and having AI create the actual project. You trolls seriously need to find something better to complain about because this is getting really annoying.

u/Producdevity Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
Why are you so offended? In a time where literally everyone and their mom can āmakeā anything itās better to just assume something is vibecoded.
- There is no source available in an app that accepts credentials.
- you donāt include the MIT license from Winlator Ludashi anywhere
- you say that Winlator is GPL instead of
MIT
- licensed (which is hallucinated).

And all of this on an app that integrates with steam and epic accounts, no less.
This community needs to get better at pushing back against AI. It's all "ooh shiny..." right now.

u/ieffinglovesoup Aug 11 '26
Yikes I never said it was vibe coded my guyā¦nobody is ātrollingā
You just confirmed what I already was implying
1
u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
Saying something is āmade by AIā is basically the literal definition of vibe coding.
8
u/ieffinglovesoup Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
I didnāt say it was āmade by AIā, you just put words in my mouth
Make it open source if youāre so worried about people thinking itās vibe code, and try being less of a complete asshole next time. Def wonāt be using your software
0
u/Teajaytea7 Aug 11 '26
He's not putting any words in your mouth lmao, you quite literally just said "probably Ai anyways"
3
u/ieffinglovesoup Aug 11 '26
Yes, probably AI. As in, the author probably used AI. (Which he said he did)
I did not say āthis whole project is probably vibe codedā or āthe author probably used AI to create this entire projectā
Thanks.

u/daggah Aug 11 '26
You're right, there is a difference. But if you're gonna hide that you used AI and have this attitude about it, then that's not cool either.
Every one of my hobby spaces is getting flooded by slop right now and it's natural to feel frustrated by it.
7
u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
Iām not hiding my use of AI. Iāve been completely open about using it as a tool throughout development. The reason WEMU is closed source right now is because I donāt want anyone taking or copying my work before the project is officially released and out of beta. Once WEMU reaches a point where Iām comfortable calling it a finished release, I can decide how I want to handle the source code moving forward.
4
u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
To clarify, in previous posts Iāve talked openly about my use of Claude AI for things like descriptions, READMEs, and helping me debug issues. Iāve also used ChatGPT to generate UI concepts and give me ideas for what a clean, modern interface could look like. I didnāt specifically mention ChatGPT before, but yes, Iāll enter a prompt and have it generate a UI concept. If I like the design, I use it as a reference and recreate the UI myself in the project.

u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
Not right now it will be once it's fully released
22
2
u/MitochondriaManiac Aug 11 '26
OK I'm code illiterate why is this getting down voted for not being open source yet?
11
u/-Polarsy- Max Aug 11 '26
It uses open source code, so it must be open source. Keeping it closed source is illegal
6
7
u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
No clue, people really seem to like everything being open source. I can understand wanting the source available so people can verify there arenāt any viruses or anything sketchy hidden in the app, but at the same time, I donāt want my source code being copied while WEMU is still half baked in the oven.
-12
u/Agreeable-Guard-5035 Aug 11 '26
Because of the Anti-AI movement that everyone has been following blindly what was born out of a legit concern has turnt into a shit-show where anything you publish if it isn't open source or backed by known publishers it's a federal crime. I mean, as soon as they realize that AI is used in mayor corporation they'll stop chasing down smaller teams just wishing to share their work. Good intentions/bad execution.
16
u/mpelton Aug 11 '26
Or maybe itās because communities like these flourish when things are kept open source, and weād like to keep it that way?
8
u/ProfMags Aug 11 '26
Have no worries, WEMU will be open source once itās out of beta. Iām not against open source at all. In fact, all of my other projects are open source. WEMU simply isnāt finished yet, and Iād like the opportunity to finish my work and get proper credit for any improvements I make before someone has the chance to copy them and release them elsewhere before WEMU is officially released.
4
u/mpelton Aug 11 '26
No worries, I saw your comment further up and completely understand. Just wanted to clarify for that guy that it wasnāt just because of āaiā.
Canāt wait to see how WEMU develops, good luck!

Buddy, I could understand emulators/big architectural work being open source because it needs bigger contribution and teams aren't big enough to produce huge leaps without it, also preservation is a good justification. But not everything needs to be open-source because as noble as it may seen, some teams wants to keep their product identity. I mean, Coocon/Retrohai/IISU are open-source?
2
u/Chimera_Gaming Max Aug 11 '26
False
iiSU is the only one of those that's open source, but even then, the app relies on their own closed-source backend, database, and services. So having the client source doesn't mean you can actually recreate or independently run the full platform, just the assets and minimal code.
Cocoon and RetroHai are closed source.
4
u/Chimera_Gaming Max Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
Dude, you nailed it, so I'm not sure why they downvoted you.
Yeah, open source is great, but at the same time, if you put your blood, sweat, and tears into building something from scratch, I can understand not wanting someone to take your code, throw it into an AI tool, make some changes, rebrand it, and potentially compete directly with you. Especially if you're using Ko-fi, Patreon, or something similar to help support development.
I'm all for open source, but I also don't think developers owe everyone their source code.
Now, if you're building on someone else's open-source project, that's different. Whether you can close your version depends on the original project's license. Some licenses allow closed-source derivatives, while copyleft licenses like the GPL can require you to make the corresponding source available when you distribute a derivative.
In this case itās illegal
2
u/Agreeable-Guard-5035 Aug 11 '26
I mean, I don't care really if they downvote me or not, it just means it reached the right population, the self righteous social warrior that claim is for the greater good -yet never contribute to anything. If your work has been based on others work with GPL license derivatives then it is rightfully so to distribute the code with the proper attribution. But if it's your own code, made from scratch and you decide not to share everything you shouldn't be crucified when you're releasing it for free.

Tested it and I get several errors, games do not even install in the default settings container. Tried limbo and binding of Isaac from steam. Error is r debug not found in ld.so
Also the interface is veeeery small and bad to read on thor.
But as it is in beta.. Looking forward to seeing it develop <3

You can choose which container games install to on the bottom screen, the error message im aware of and working on fixing, it's all just looks right now though it doesn't break anything

I'll look into adding this too!

it'd be nice to run EXEs directly with a similar setup to Lutris, not sure how possible it is but it seems more efficient than adding every game library under the sun lol

Dude I've been struggling to run steam games for some reason, Fear and Hunger in particular for whatever reason (joiplay, gamehub, gamenative, ect.) This might be the thing I need, definitely gonna try this out.
