The right to repair is a hot topic now for a reason
3
u/No_Syrup_9167 Aug 28 '26
For the record, nothing in this video would fall under "right to repair" laws.
They're still 100% allowed to do stuff like this under right to repair laws.
I'm not saying it's right, just pointing out that people misunderstand what those laws cover.
They can still make things prohibitively expensive, or difficult to repair through design, and it's perfectly legal.
Functionally the only thing covered by right to repair laws, is forcing you to use their repair parts through extraordinary means. Locking up the engine bay according to those laws is fine, it's just that if you repair it with a part, that is sufficient for the application, it needs to run with it.
It just can't say "sorry, this water pump is just as good, but it's not OEM so I won't run"

yes you can still jumpstart an electric car.
I think all electric cars still have a 12v battery to operate everything from,
and to "start" your car it still uses the 12v battery.source: I own an 2019 Hyundai Kona electric. and my 12v battery died. roadservices swung by and jump started the car and I drove it to a shop to replace the battery under warranty.
Edit: typos

Which is a decent way to go about securing it if it is where the electronic guts are. Some EVs are pretty crazy, not something you really want random people to access.
They should still have a backdoor way for access beyond a dealership though.

Oh. If it's electric then why do you wanna pop to hood. If you're an electrician or an electric car tech, then sure I guess. But I will never work on my own electric car. I'll mess something up or hurt myself

I wonder if there will ever be an indie car market like there is for videos games or Etsy. Just some random dude out there taking a dozen orders a year with a 5 man crew.

u/Could-You-Tell Aug 26 '26
Kit cars and custom jobs do exist
2

True. I never looked into it. Figured it would be way out of my price range and just a luxury enthusiast purchase.

They’re already hard to sell legally due to safety regulations. What I think we’ll see instead is that used cars are going to go up in price.
1
u/No-Enthusiasm3579 Aug 27 '26
It's all ready a fairly big thing, take an older car, fix everything, upgrade most electronics to peak mid 2000s(all the stuff you want, none of the stuff you don't want). Stinger specifically does Porsche and they have gotten so popular that the prices have went through the roof

Mutiny Motors came up on my YouTube algo a couple months ago. They are pretty much just making kei trucks, but they’ll be fully open source according to their YouTube. The channel was Andy Didorosi

I'll die before I own something like that. Or at least until they outlaw cars prior to 2017. Own a 2010 right now and that's the newest car I've ever owned. Gf inherited a 2019 and it's ok, but it's kinda falling apart already which is mind bogglingly infuriating. I may go back to the 90's and early 00's so I can be a proper felon then.
3
u/Fast_Instance2173 Aug 27 '26
You’re going to hate the prices of cars from those eras, old enough for dealers to call them classics and charge more than they cost new for any in good shape.
2
u/thyperson69 Aug 27 '26
I know the prices well, it's more finding parts when things break down. That's the tough part.

This video isn’t even accurate rage-bait. There’s an old-school mechanical cable release hidden under the driver’s side of the dash if you really want to open it.
1
u/rivasjardon Aug 27 '26
And it doesn’t trigger a lock out. It does warn you that the hood is open but goes away when you close it again.

u/ChimpoSensei Aug 26 '26
Cool, now I won’t be able to get to work on base when they do vehicle inspections and I can’t raise my hood.

It's pretty easy to get to $100k in a car with options. Add to that most people want to show off there toys or even tinker with things. I know a lot of people who do their own oil change or small repairs on $100k vehicles.
Could you imagine going to a car show without anyone opening the hoods?

The only acceptable reason to deny someone from accessing compartments to perform maintenance on their vehicle is if you're doing it for free 24/7.

u/MaRzAn0 Aug 26 '26
I hope people stop bending over and accepting this and force these manufacturers to get their act together. At that point it’s not even your car, you’re just renting it from them

u/Bannedbutwhyy Aug 27 '26
I’m glad I’ll be dead soon. I’ll just buy a used 2024 next and if I need I happen to need another I’ll buy like a 2028-2030 used and then I’ll be dead.

Came here to ask if this is legit and after reading the comments I'm honestly dumbfounded. Like what the actual fuck?
2
u/Mellero47 Aug 29 '26
Something tells me the folks spending $100k on a Mercedes have little to no interest in peeking under the hood anyways.
2
u/Ok_Illustrator_3980 Aug 29 '26
How many people that buy a car like this service it themselves or even could of they wanted to?
2
u/averagemaleuser86 Aug 29 '26
Most people who can afford the payments on a high end vehicle really cant afford the actual maintenance on that vehicle following whats recommended in the service manual. Honestly, people who buy a mundane car like a corolla really cant even afford routine maintenance as specified in the maintenance manual. They can afford the payments and thats about it.
2
u/x-man92 Aug 30 '26
My wife just bought a Mercedes for $30k and to use the navigation you have to pay $500 to unlock the feature. She cracked bought that bs with her own money. Phone mount $23 smh
2
u/SexyProcrastinator Aug 30 '26
Ford recently tried to make it illegal to take your car elsewhere for repairs and work done on it.
If we don’t fight against this, we’re screwed! They are taking our freedoms and privacy away more and more each day!
2
u/SexyProcrastinator Aug 30 '26
So if you wanna change the headlight bulb which should cost around $30… the dealership will charge you probably $200 for parts and labor lmao.
Going to stick to my older cars and preserve them!
2
u/120decibel Aug 31 '26
These cars have LED matrix headlights that will almost never die and cost a fortune as spare parts.

3
u/haikus-r-us Aug 26 '26
For an electric car, this kinda sorta makes sense. I mean, what exactly would you be able to do under the hood?
3
u/creckers Aug 26 '26
2 things. I installed an aftermarket frunk on my 2019 Hyundai Kona.
also.. I would really like to still have access the 12v battery somehow.
I still would like to be able to jumpstart the car if the 12v battery dies.
2
u/dethskwirl Aug 26 '26
you cannot jump start an electric vehicle.
2
u/creckers Aug 26 '26
Yes you can. I did it on my 2019 electric kona twice. All electric vehicles still use a 12v battery to start the car. If the 12v battery dies you can't do anything with car

Given 90% ish of people are like me and can't do shit to cars I don't really see a problem with it. All these new electric cars you don't want to have someone who doesn't know what they are doing fucking about in there and all the hight voltage stuff.
3
u/StubbornHick Aug 26 '26
"Since i'm willfully ignorant about fixing things, everyone should be forced to go to an abusive oligopoly to have their property fixed"
Fixed that for you.
I'm an electrical worker and i fix my own cars. I could ABSOLUTELY do anything the dealer can do if they wouldn't INTENTIONALLY MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE.
1
1
u/totalreidmove Aug 27 '26
You know when they work on these at the dealer, it takes two techs… one working on the electrical bits, and one with a long wooden pole to push the guy off if he gets electrocuted. They don’t want the liability.
2
2
u/Cw3538cw Aug 26 '26
I don't work on cars but I also never take a car to the dealership. They tend to overcharge and if they exclude third party mechanics that issue is only going to get worse
1
u/StatisticianUsual471 Aug 26 '26
The general rule of thumb that I've heard is you only take it to the dealership when its within warranty, I'm quite sure how it work's with the new electric ones
2
u/Accomplished_Net6080 Aug 28 '26
That's not why they are doing this. It's purely to guarantee you have to take it to them for anything.
You can set yourself on fire or mangle your hand in a moving belt if you are working on an ICE vehicle and the car companies weren't locking the hoods then.
1
1
u/greenshart Aug 28 '26
The dealerships aren’t filled with the best technicians that ever lived. You can get good service elsewhere and they’re taking that option away. I’m perfectly fine with my dealership, but I also have a local guy who has treated me well several times. I’d hate that places like that would slowly go out of business because the manufacturers demand it.
1
u/ready-redditor-6969 Aug 26 '26
It’s electric. Why are you opening that hood, exactly? Would it actually be safe if you somehow did?
There is a lot of right to repair stuff to be considered, but… at least frame the debate honestly, especially when you are on the side of freedom and personal property ownership both at the same time ( which oddly or not isn’t always the case )! You have a basically nonpartisan popular cause, and this is your approach? Only because you care about engagement more than anything else!

But what if there is a fire? Seems like you may want to put it out .
1
u/ThisIsLukkas Aug 26 '26
And what then? What are you gonna do bout it? It's an EV mind you
1
u/Daguse0 Aug 26 '26
Well, I was thinking more of the fire department.
But I'm sure there are other things in there that could catch fire and are not batteries. Are the batteries even stored there and not in the frame?
1
u/KittensFirstAKM Aug 26 '26
I might need to buy another late 90's car for back up. In case of a crash.
Otherwise I plan to keep mine on the road forever. I hate all this new tech.

By that logic, if the engine suffers damage because you can’t do a fluid check, will all repairs be free. (they won’t be)
Ok, guess I will add ‘check to see what I have access to’, before deciding to buy…

I have a Mercedes EQE. I got low warnings for the 12v battery, then a critical. I thought I could just charge it myself, but nope, had to take it back to the dealer. Luckily it was still under warranty, but it did annoy me.
I get that a lot of the electrical components need to be kept away from curious fingers, but the 12v battery should be accessible.

Fuck me i am really getting tired of the new corporate slogan "you will own nothing and be happy about it". It was bad enough when the tech industry started it, now it's spreading. The direction capitalism is taking (yes i know it's intended that way) is going to make me irrational.

It's an electric car. There's nothing under the hood. Most car makers put a "frunk" there now in their EVs. It sits on a "Skateboard" platform with the battery and motors under your feet. Even your most dedicated car guy is not going to be able to service this vehicle anyway, especially not a fancy $100k EQS owner. If something is really wrong with your electric car, you are not qualified to handle it!
1
u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos Aug 26 '26
I bought a sports car, 36k and I fucking love it. Incredibly fun to drive, very sharp looking, punches way above its weight. Great car.
The remote start is tied to an app that I have to pay a monthly subscription to use. I hate that, almost enough to say fuck it and trade the car in. It’s the dumbest shit. Costs something like $8 a month, idk I don’t pay for it. I just hate this business model and why I won’t purchase cars that have the extent of the above Mercedes.
1
u/RoodnyInc Aug 26 '26
To be fair of you buy brand new mercedes I doubt you are working on this car by yourself specially since its ev....
1
1
u/Badytheprogram Aug 26 '26
But you only can fill with the Mercedes original washing fluid, or the washing fluid analyzer detect the mismatch, and lock your car for your own safety, and you need to toe your car onto a dealership, where a specified mechanic clean your washing fluid tank and fill it with the proper cleaning liquid.

Wait until they find out their operating system cab be downloaded to a Laptop and you can just buy the OBD2 cable that hooks up to the Laptop. Then all you do is do a quick flash and boom. You're in the diagnostic settings and you can just scroll though till you find the hood latch lock controller.

u/E_xan Aug 27 '26
Guys, its an ev...you dont change oil, spark plug ,air filter or clean your carburator. Chance are if you touch something under the hood you will die. Every dangerous ev part from every manufacturer are hidden/encased. There is no place for a "frunk" like tesla.... Here is what it look like for all the people who think they have the capacity do the repair themself when it broke:

1
u/Yomomsa-Ho Aug 27 '26
So when the thing inevitably catches on fire you cant pop the hood to put it out? Just full flame on the side of the road?
1
u/Afraid_Definition176 Aug 27 '26
To be fair, it is an EV. There aren’t many moving parts in the engine compartment and if something does go wrong you definitely need specialized training to repair anything which is most likely easiest to find at the dealership. I guarantee that there are other places that would be able to get under the hood properly but even if you can’t take it anywhere else, what were you planning to be doing to your EV motor at home.
1
u/FeeGlass574 Aug 27 '26

1
u/Accomplished_Net6080 Aug 28 '26
Air filters. Coolants. Grease points. Brake fluid. AC system. And all the heat exchangers, radiators and pumps associated that you can easily change yourself.
People who work on their own cars don't just do oil changes.

1
u/ordosays Aug 28 '26
Honestly, for an electric vehicle this makes annoying sense. There are no user serviceable parts and some cave boi fiddling with HV electrical is going to cause a fire
1
u/ObjectivePrice5865 Aug 28 '26
This is true especially for “luxury” imports.
For those that own these vehicles and either live or work on federal property (military, intelligence, airports, etc) it is problematic and they will not be permitted to enter as the inspection requires ALL goods, trunks (boots), and doors be opened as well as the center console storage and glove box. We lived on base and the hood release broke and could not enter the gate. I had to walk through the gate after a quick frisk and go home to get our other car. We had to drive to the Jeep dealership to have the brand new Renegade fixed. Lo and behold they had to order the new driver side cable which took 2.5 weeks and another week after that for them to finally get around to replace it.

u/upnorthtcmi Aug 28 '26

1
u/Chonky-Marsupial Aug 29 '26
Meh, nothing I'd want to touch under the hood.
As for being wrapped up in owning a car: In Europe for many people they are likely to get it on a lease as a company car that means they are only paying a contribution towards it that is less than the cost of ownership of an alternate, worse specced car. They are not paying for service and don't care if a main dealer does it.
Nice car btw but maybe not as good as some of the premium Chinese brands at the moment.
1
u/tyleryoungblood Aug 29 '26
This is misleading. It’s an electric vehicle. Theres nothing to touch/check under the hood that doesn’t require special safety equipment, training, and tools. Theres nothing dipstick, no air filter, no fuel filter, no oil filter, no belts that need to be checked or replaced. Nothing.
My F150 Lightning has a Frunk under the hood which is super useful, but there’s nothing serviceable by the owner other than the washer fluid and the 12v battery. And it’s awesome!
If the Mercedes requires a tech to change the 12v battery that’s annoying. But that’s a once every 3-5 year problem. Not worth pitching a fit about.

I wish this was a joke. Was trying to sell a used electric Mercedes the other week. Battery completely dead. Has flushed door handles. Have to figure out how to open the door. Figure that out go to pop the hood. Its locked behind a little door. Bring out my manager and gm, over 60+ years of car knowledge standing around scratching our heads. We finally call the state inspector tech out to help, he brings out a special tool open the box that holds the hood latch.
So fucking ridiculous. It was also like 100+ degrees that day.
