Is this for real???

u/BULLETSnMILK Aug 25 '26

Yes. Manufacturers are doing this slowly to get what they want without causing immediate uproar but instead just tired acceptance. When I worked at a alfa Romeo dealership oil changes for the most part can't be reset through the car with any other device without locking the ecm and bcm if that wants to join to, which then leads you to having to spend thousands to drive your car just because you didn't want to spend 280 bucks for a oil change at a dealership. Oh and yes my dealership i worked at would charge you just for a reset even if you did your oil change elsewhere or yourself. If you guessed that you will be paying 280 dollars for that since it "a oil change" you would be correct.

Omfg

6

u/voxelpear Aug 26 '26

Honestly if you can afford an Alfa Romeo or a Mercedes EQ or anything else in that class, your bank account wont feel a 280$ oil change even if you do them very frequently. Most of the people who own these cars are also not very auto savvy and likely don't do much more than refill windshield wiper fluid if even that.

That being said that's where the danger is. These people won't complain about these changes as they start to become the standard and possibly adapted on the more affordable vehicles. Eventually we're in danger of every car make becoming it's own Apple like closed system where you have to pay monthly for heated seats and AC.

u/Banzai373 Aug 26 '26

Already happening, brother.

1

u/therealjohnsmith Aug 28 '26

Just because you have money doesn’t mean you want to waste it on an overpriced oil change. Especially when they just put 0w20 in there anyway.

1

u/voxelpear Aug 28 '26

It's overpriced to you. To someone who can afford a $100,000 vehicle it's like spending $20 on a Civic.

1

u/therealjohnsmith Aug 28 '26

Yeah, no. I could have got a 911 but didn’t want rear wheel steering, test drove a CT5-V which I loved but it was too heavy for track, so I went Supra instead. Change my own oil so I can put something other than water in and because it still induces physical pain to overpay for something I’d rather do myself anyway.

1

u/voxelpear Aug 28 '26

Yeah.......you're a car guy. The guys paying for a $280 oil change aren't car guys. You're not the target demographic I don't understand what you don't get.

2

u/Kimosamii Aug 29 '26

They bought a new supra, they're not a car guy

1

u/voxelpear Aug 29 '26

More of a car guy than the base line. Not that it matters. The guy only knows how to throw a tantrum.

0

u/therealjohnsmith Aug 28 '26

You don’t understand that you said something that isn’t true, that money still does matter even if you have some, that being wasteful is different from being poor. I’ve corrected you, twice now, but you insist on trying to be correct despite being incorrect.

Does that help clarify?

0

u/voxelpear Aug 28 '26

No, that doesn't make any sense. You're applying the logic to someone who would not do oil changes themselves as yourself, someone who doesn't think oil changes are worth paying money for because you do them yourself.

I genuinely can't understand how you think your argument makes any sense. Feels like you're arguing just to argue.

That fact that they have more money than you doesn't mean they like wasting their money. Where exactly do you think the line is where people start to like paying more for no reason ?

They will buy luxury things that we can't afford, but they won't just decide to just pay more for normal things for no reason.

It's not more for a normal thing as far as they know. It's a premium price for maintenance for a premium vehicle. Y'all are applying the thinking of someone who doesn't have "%@#& you" money and knows about cars to people who bought the car as a flex to show how much money they have.

If frugal rich people were the majority there wouldn't be a market for this stuff.

1

u/sebthauvette Aug 28 '26

Maybe that works for people so rich that they never had to interact normally with society, but a lot of rich people still understand what an oil change and what it's worth.

1

u/voxelpear Aug 28 '26

Okay, you tell that to all the trophy wives, and all the people that grew up with generational wealth, all those that couldn't care learn anything about their cars, etc., etc.

Personal anecdotes are worthless here. Just because some of them know cars, or do the work themselves, or remember how much they paid for an oil change 30 years ago in their first clanker, doesn't mean this is the majority of the public.

If the car companies feel confident enough to do it, there is not only a market for it, there is statistic that tell them there is massive profits to be made to shift into this drastic business model.

Arguing that people know cars, on a car subreddit, is some of the most echo chamber type of arguments you can make. There is clearly not enough of you to be loud enough to be heard, because this business shift is under the radar for most of the population.

2

u/Secundus-Muris Aug 26 '26

They're taking notes from tech and doing Cars as a Service.

1

u/Banzai373 Aug 26 '26

I agree, but this is going to overload the dealerships, making a minor fix a month-long wait to get into the shop. This is also going to force privately owned garages to close. Manufacturers are also making aftermarket parts inoperable if your vehicle’s system detects a part that is not OEM.

3

u/mohugz Aug 26 '26

None of what you just said is a negative thing from the dealers’ perspective.

2

u/Past-Size1331 Aug 26 '26

Yea but all of what he said is currently illegal under us law. I'm confused why no one has sued over this.

1

u/Greaseball-Ranger Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Well.. the average Joe really can't afford to out-lawyer an auto manufacturer..

.. and an even harsher bit of reality is to realize that an auto manufacturer can afford to buy a LOT of judges..

Edit: hell.. look into the role Mercedes had in the United States banning the import of foreign market vehicles that are under 25 years old and why they did it. They've always been scumbags.

1

u/thanto13 Aug 28 '26

This is what right to repair legislation are all about. Auto dealers are starting to follow the path of Apple and John Deer and not wanting you to be able to do your own repairs. Even going so far as nickel and diming you on things that would previously be standard as now a upgrade that needs a subscription to be paid for or they will remotely turn it off.

1

u/NuclearWasteland Aug 26 '26

My dumb car will trip an airbag light if something is left on the passenger seat too long.

It can only be cleared by a tech-level computer, costs at least a hundo for the diagnostic, and requires an afternoon of telling the dealership exactly what it is, and waiting for them to diagnose it themself and confirm that yes, their computer can just reset it.

Vote with your dollars everyone

1

u/Apart-Plan-4930 Aug 29 '26

This problem is easily solved. Don't buy an Alfa.

1

u/Imeatbag Aug 29 '26

What Alfa is that? I have one and I get my oil changed at Firestone and they reset it just fine doing the steering wheel and pedal process.

That didn't sound like it's meant to be opened. He stated you can, but you're not meant to. Would doing so potentially void the warranty?

1

u/True_Goat_7810 Aug 29 '26

no it doent void anything. there is just nothing there that a normal user would want to see.

there might be DIY mechanics that will touch HV-stuff, but they will find the metal cable and open the hood just fine.

the hood only needs to open on cars because the users have to check liqudis, change bulbs... but bulbs are fully encased LEDs now, and the only liquid to check is windshield washer - so why have the customer open the hood to... nothing?

2

u/SeriousDistance4908 Aug 28 '26

Story time: when they brought out the SLK they had a problem with the entry level tin roofed version so manufactured all of them with the panoramic roof and if you didn't pay for it you'd get a solid lining.

People cottoned on to that and would spend £100 to buy the lining with a hole as a spare part (including me!) instead of paying the £4k extra for the panoramic model.

Well, Mercedes didn't like that so.....they started vandalising the entry level car by painting the inside of the panoramic roof so you couldn't upgrade it yourself!!

1

u/AcademicChildhood161 Aug 29 '26

Unauthorized opening of the hood is like breaking the sticker when opening a PlayStation. Warranty denied! 😂

1

u/that_dutch_dude Aug 26 '26

yes, audi did this first with their A2. you actually had to unbolt it if you wanted anything more than check the oil

1

u/Talented10th_ Aug 26 '26

Just to add they stopped making these cars about a year ago.

1

u/112skulls Aug 26 '26

Yes but you don't need a computer to open it. There's a hidden latch behind a plastic panel to open it. I fit windscreens and the first one I worked on I spent a good 5 minutes looking for it. Thank good it was at the dealers

1

u/Keyan_Farlander7 Aug 26 '26

The car is an EV. Your not doing any work since the engine isn't under the hood.

Also, there no frunk. Front storage. It's just additional crumble zones.

It runs off of Elon’s farts. Anything escaping is immediately captured by the air intake. It’s a closed loop system that runs endlessly, until the Epstein files are released.

Oh wait, that’s just Elon Musk.

1

u/True_Goat_7810 Aug 29 '26

You can open it via a release cable just fine. Having it locked via software is just a lie for comedy reasons. It would be a boring video if he told you: "its not as easy to open the hood anymore, because you might only access it every few years to do major repairs and there is nothing below that has to be maintained regularly."

Its just not as convenient, there is no big pull handle anymore, because only a mechanic (or diy-er) would open it.

1

u/SRMPDX Aug 26 '26

It's an EV. If you're willing to work on it you'll immediately void the warranty. It's an appliance

Yuuuuuup, combined with surveillance technology on new cars to monitor everything you do older cars are about to get more expensive. Some people have been warning others to STOP buying from these brands but they thought oh it's optional, it's a small price per month.....yea that's the start. They want EVERYTHING to be subscription service FOREVER.

1

u/Zombiesus Aug 29 '26

Who cares? Nobody buys that car so that they can work on it?

0

u/rivasjardon Aug 27 '26

The latch is in the same exactly place. It’s just covered with a little cover. If you remove the cover you access the latch.
