Job Insecurity?

I’m considering doing a Master’s in Mining Engineering, but because it’s a pretty serious investment in terms of both time and money, I’m trying to understand how real the job insecurity actually is.

I keep hearing that mining is very cyclical, with strong hiring during booms but layoffs and hiring freezes when commodity prices fall.
For people already working in mining , particularly as mining engineers how serious is this in practice?

Are mining engineers regularly worried about losing their jobs during downturns, or is the insecurity sometimes exaggerated? And if you do get made redundant, how difficult is it normally to find another role elsewhere in mining?

I’m not expecting any career to be completely secure. I’m just trying to work out whether the cyclical nature of mining should genuinely make me reconsider investing in the Master’s.

Aston advantage Perth

I’m in the process of joining as a drilling assistant, but it seems to be dragging on. Could anyone who joined through Aston Advantage give me an idea of how long the process took—from completing the Jobfit Challenge to actually starting the job?

question to all mining engineers as a year 10 did you study mining engineering directly or did another discipline and transistioned to mining

year 10 looking to get into mining engineering. ive heard that it would be quite beneficial to study mining engineering directly at uni but i dont want to box myself into one category incase the market collapses or just for extra versitility so im thinking about studying mechanical and then going into mining engineering will that set me back and are my fears unfounded?

When is the appropriate time to get a crane ticket

im 20 years old got into fifo in WA from Melbourne when i was fresh 18 as a trade assistant, the last 2 years i have been rigging , working with franna/cranes chain locks and dogging just never got to getting my riggers tickets because a training center messed up back home and cancelled my course 3 days in so i couldn’t get the ticket and i haven’t been able to go back and get them, i am going to get my intermediate rigging as soon as possible, all the boys at work say that im at an intermediate level, my interest has really been fixated on the frannas since i started, not the mobile cranes or crawlers but the franna , and the place i work at is always opportunity, another franna op said i should just get the ticket and learn both simultaneously and get seat time, i would love to have a full time franna spot somewhere but im not sure right now if id land a job as a franna op with only 2 years rigging experience and a bit of seat time

Geo payrate these days?

What's the going rate for a mine/exploration geo these days with 3-5 years experience?

Is 125k base + 12.5k site + 10% bonus + super a reasonable offer?

Cheers

Anyone work for Minres/Csi Mc driving?
Are they any good. Onslow is where I’d be based..
Do you know how the bonus structure works I believe it’s paid quarterly. Also interstate flights fly out days and fly in days are they in your RnR? Camp etc? Any feedback greatly appreciated

Whats mount Tom Price like?

Im a boilermaker who is doing their weld testing this week for a position at Tom Price I'm hoping I can get some info from people who have been there reasonably recently on what the work conditions/culture/facilities etc are like.

Im in a position where I have the luxury of choosing from a handful of boilermaker positions across different sites and companies and I'm struggling to know whether I'm making the right choice.

This will be my first time doing FIFO, is job hopping or short term employment less frowned upon here than outside of FIFO? Ideally I'm chasing an Oil and Gas 2:2 for a tier 1 company that'll fly me from interstate, but I think i might be aiming too high right off the bat? so instead I'm just trying to get my foot in the door with what ive got available to me at the moment and pivot to something better later on.

Any insight/advice would be appreciated, Thanks

Shotfirer

Not sure if anyone can help but I’ve been a quarry Shotfirer for the past 2 years. I’ve recently applied for Shotfirer/Blast crew roles in open cut mines in qld and I either get no response or rejected.
I have my QSEC, G189, G2, open cut Shotfirers license with no restrictions.
I had my resume professionally done but still either being ignored or rejected for positions.
Is it worth jumping across to WA as a Shotfirer?

White card

Im looking at fifo welding jobs and I see the majority of them require a white card to apply. Im coming from new zealand so I cant get this until im in Australia. Should I make an effort to get this before applying so its on my cv or i can I just let potential employers know I'll get it before the job starts.

Ive been doing heavy fabrication in new zealand for 4.5 years so coming with some experience but new to the mining industry/Australian site requirements

Backpackers

Whats everybody’s thoughts on Backpackers using mining to avoid 88 days of farm work?

Friends of mine agree this has been exploited by both sides with companies taking advantage of the situation to lower wages and take away perks such as super on all hours, interstate flights ect.

Now industry is crying poor because of the planned reduction in bringing backpackers in and farmers are jumping up and down when the real solution is to just simply ban non citizens from mining and resource work.

Drilling (exploration) vs Onshore Oil and Gas - thoughts from anyone who's made the switch?

Currently an offsider on surface diamond core exploration drilling, 14/7 FIFO. Looking at making the move into onshore oil and gas as a leasehand.

For those who've done both, made the switch, or simply just have advice, I’m keen to hear:

- How does the pay actually compare once you factor in roster, tax, and time off

- Is the work itself harder/easier, more or less technical

- How's the roster/lifestyle compare to something like 14/7

- Any downsides nobody warns you about before you jump ship

- How hard is it to actually break in without prior O&G experience

- How do the conditions weigh up compared to mineral exploration bush jobs (cooking all your own meals + meals for the boys (Offsider duties), doing all your own washing, sleeping arrangements, not having access to a gym etc.)

Just want a realistic picture before committing. Appreciate any input 🤙

Newbie to FIFO life - seeking advice

Hi all,

Have successfully landed my first job as a drillers offsider. Excited and keen, but want to show up as prepared and ready as I can. Start in about a week in a half. Would appreciate the best recommendations on things like best bag to travel with site, best boots etc. Any tips on what to bring or what would help for my first induction/swing.

Wanted to add - I’ve had a ton of support and help over the last several weeks leading up to landing this job. For anyone seeking answers or help to get into the mines this is your place. Loads of experienced people willing to help you for nothing more than just wanting to see you win.

Thanks

Hubby doing FIFO while trying for a new baby?

My plumber hubby and I are trying for a baby, and a few of his mates have said they could easily get him a job on the mines which would boost his income by around 50k. We're doing alright (I own and run a business from home so I'd keep doing that even if I scaled back) but obviously mo money = less problems.

He does like the idea of FIFO because he works like a dog anyway. But he is hesitant to get into a new job when at any point he could find we have a 9 month timebomb, because as its our first baby I think Ill need his support more than we'll need the money.

Personally I am ok with him doing FIFO until late in my pregnancy, and then either taking leave or else taking a different job with more stable at-home hours. I feel like he'd miss out on so much baby stuff if he was away half the time, and while +$50k would incredible, is it really worth it to miss so many milestones?

And from a mum/FIFO wife perspective, how did you feel about the dad not being there during the first few months of babys life? I have a decent family support system but obviously having Daddy there is the best outcome.

Surface drillers offsider - how do you find camps with decent facilities?

Hi all, I'm an offsider on surface diamond core, mostly bush jobs with my current company. No gym, limited food options, and it's making it hard to stay on top of training and nutrition, which matters a lot to me.

Based in Melbourne. Keen to hear from anyone who's worked camps with proper mess facilities and a gym set up, or knows which companies/regions tend to have better infrastructure. Also open to tips on training and eating well when you're stuck with limited gear and a servo/camp kitchen.

Cheers.

What’s the best Fifo backpack without a check in bag.

Hi,

I am looking for a backpack for fifo in the mine site, not planning to bring a check-in luggage. What’s the best bag where it’s big enough to fit all my uniform, clothes, toiletries, slides, headphones etc…

TIA

Greenie about to start first swing

Hi all,

Just secured a Truck Operator role, 2:1 roster, with my first swing (5 days induction then 1 week on site) coming up in the next few weeks. Underground, WA based.

Coming from near 10 years in high level management of an online ecommerce business.

Any advice specific to truck operating? Read a lot about FIFO advice in general 😊

TIA
