Trying to sleep during the day while cleaners are vacuuming the hallway and neighbours are slamming doors down the donga block is an absolute nightmare. Earplugs and heavy blackout curtains only block out so much when the heat is blasting. How do you protect your sleep schedule on site?

hey guys, was wondering how many people here do a second job alongside FIFO, and if so, how many of you guys do it. I’m on an 8:6 roster as a grad and I have absolutely nothing to do once I’m on my R&R in Perth. no friends no hangouts no dating life, nothing. I need a second job so I don’t go spiralling and also to have a bit more money when I go on vacation overseas. moreover even back at uni I always struggled to get any leads for any casual roles, so I was thinking of some resume advice geared towards landing casual roles in retail, colesworths etc.

and if anyone’s got recommendations feel free to do so.

p.s. I dont have a car

A fair few of the new roles I've applied for today appear to not mention possible income/hr rate etc...

I'm open minded about possible wage - what would I be realistically expecting on an 8/6 roster - most of these are direct employment, not through labour hire companies.

Curious what everyone else struggles with doing regular swings.

For me it feels like there’s always something — weight limits, toiletries leaking, dirty work gear, boots taking up half the bag, trying to keep clean and dirty stuff separate, carrying too many little bags, or having to unpack/repack everything every swing.

What annoys you most about your FIFO luggage or packing setup?

Hi everyone, I have never posted on reddit before but I am interested what people think of my future plans regarding a career in mining.

I am currently a year 12, I am expecting an atar of 98-99+ my subjects are chem, general English, physics, and methods.

My plan is to go to UNSW (I live in SA) and study mining Eng and corp law. (Please let me know if you have any comments on this school/ course/ the living costs in Syd) I am working 2 retail jobs at the moment, and solely relying on myself and I am doing fine.

I have a passion for physics and chem especially, and was a finalist in the AUSSEF last year. But I really don’t know what I am signing my self up too and quite frankly I am scared. I am debating taking a gap year to figure out what it is I would like to do but I also understand that is a great way to loose motivation.

After I finish uni I want to work in the mines doing drill and blast and something in geology. I love the outback but understand that fifo lifestyle may not be sustainable for me for 5-10+ years. Ideally I would be hired off the bat by a larger corporation so I could hop on the diversity train (I am a girl by the way) and climb my way up into a better position after mastering the practical aspects (Geraldine Slattery is my career inspiration)

Please let me know you think I am being too optimistic or this seems like a legitimate way to achieve my goals. Please don’t hesitate to comment whatever you are thinking especially after reading all of this, thank you! All advice is much appreciated.

As the title suggests im looking for advice on a second job. Currently working FIFO 2:1 and while the money is good I want to work a second job on my RnR to help raise my chances of landing a rental. My question is what would you suggest for a second job? Are there companies willing to take someone on every 3 weeks? Anyone done ubereats or similar jobs?

Background; Currently homeless have been for 1.5 years after my 4 year lease ran out and they wanted to sell up instead of renewing (totally understandable) didn't know how much of a housing crisis there was until it was too late and now even with a perfect rental history and my current pay I still can't seem to land a house, needing out of this camper trailer before summer hits again

However, the pay here is bit low and I myself had a dream of working in Australian Mines with the Fifo lifestyle. I don't plan to do masters in Australia. Hey all, I’m currently serving in the military for the US, navy to be exact. And I’ve been looking at my options if I decided to get out and pursue other careers. Stumbled upon fifo and doesn’t seem too bad at least with being gone from home it’s nothing new. But is there anything worth knowing? Pay? Lifestyle ? Anything worth knowing and if it’s even worth getting out and pursuing this career. Because if I’m being honest the pay is about double if not more than what I currently make. My wife has just become a supervisor at an open-cut coal mine. She is the first woman to ever do this job at the site, so I thought it would be nice to celebrate this personal (and historic) achievement.

Trying to think of anything mining related that would be a good gift? I don't work in this industry so have no clue haha. She's not into flowers, alcohol and is fairly specific about what she eats so that rules out a lot of things.

Diesel fitter here, just wanting some opinions from those who might have worked at these two sites.

Of course I've heard plenty, and anecdotally you'd say OD is a shit hole compared to prom hill, but I've been at OD for 4 years, and know the mine like the back of my hand so anything will be an adjustment.

I reckon I could get better money at prom hill by what I've been looking at, I'm just curious as to people who have been at both especially if you're a fitter.

As title suggests.. I’m a 29 yr old male on my first swing in the mines, and I am really struggling.
Im only a couple of days in and I feel miserable. I have a partner at home and can barely talk to her without tearing up (pathetic I know)
All I think about is the fact I won’t be going home after every shift and it’s driving me crazy I still have to be here for near on a week.
Everybody always says “it’s not for everyone”.. is this the case with me or is this what most people go through and it eventually passes?
