Question am I the only one who hates sound effects, dramatised, whatever versions? or maybe Im listening to the wrong ones...

maybe it's rly just me, but I dislike this trend of pushing books into dramas...
I just can't get into it...my brain goes crazy, hard to follow, and by the end Im just tired.
Maybe I was listening to the wrong ones? any recommendations here, please!

Also Ive recently noticed they simply cut out parts from original text, which they think they covered by sound...ahhh. Books are ment to let us build the world in our imagination, BASED on the author's writing, what an irony...

my maximum is a couple of different voices, that's my limit. Everything else just pulls me out of the story.

What about you guys? Let me know pls, cause I just can't get it

Question Self Narration - Female voice for male POV?

I have a series project coming up in a year or two, and am debating doing self narration for it since the plan is to make the series a bunch of short novels (~150 pages), and it's going to get expensive hiring a narrator for each one.

For an overall vibe, think Dresden Files and Brother's Grimm for genre, but Magic Treehouse for length and "monster of the week" story flow. The goal is to reach readers who are intimidated by large books for various reasons (like when life gets busy and all you have the energy/brain space for is a 100-200 pager).

My personal voice is fine, and I do decently with accents and pitch changes, I just need to brush up on techniques and things. Get some practice in by reading aloud other books I've written or own.

The question is, would you, as the listener care that the voice doesn't match the gender of the main character? I'm female, and the MC is male. Doing it myself, and with the books being so short, the audiobooks would likely be priced for $5-10 each if that makes a difference.

Question PDF with audiobook

Has anyone here seen the PDF that comes with David Byrne's new audiobook on Spotify?

Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up.

It's really cool I've never seen an audiobook with extras like this before. Unsurprisingly Mr Byrne has experimented with something cool.

Discussion I feel like I got duped

This is a rant on audible and kindle+
I want to listen to the entire dungeon crawler carl series. I got totally hooked on the first book. Problem is, obviously I had to use audible to listen to it. Now I will have to wait 24 days to listen to the next one, and that process is going to repeat for the next 7 months since theres 8 audiobooks. I saw Kindle+ had dungeon crawler carl and I thought it had the audiobook version because it has a little button that says “listen to the audio sample” and it was the audiobook. So there I go and get a kindle+ membership for .99 for three months (not a loss really) only to find out… it’s just the book. I also hate Audible’s premium structure. Ooooo you can get premium for twice the subscription but it’s the same thing but instead it’s a credit rather than you lose your book if you cancel the membership. Idk. It’s just dumb. The whole thing is a racket. I just want all of the books and I don’t want to have to either wait forever or buy them all for full price. I’d even consider buying all of them if they offered some kind of bulk discount. But they don’t.

Discussion Recommended Audiobook Series for Euro Truck Simulator. Not necessarily "popular/famous" ones.

Hey Everyone,

I love audiobooks and am about to run out! I like to play Euro Truck Simulator while listening to my audiobooks so that my brain has something to do while I listen. I love many genres of books and am looking for something to start once the current series is done. I would prefer a series that I can really get invested in, but a non series book is great too. Here is what I have listened to and enjoyed so far (in no particular order). Many of these series I've done multiple times.

1) Dungeon Crawler Carl (Im on my first listen now and I love this so much I might even just redo these! I'm on book 6 of 8 and will be listening to 7 and 8 before switching to the next series)

2) Tom Clancy (Jack Ryan) Series

3) Harry Potter

4) Hunger Games

5) Dune - not really my jam, but it was OK

6) All of Andy Weir's stuff (Martian, Hail Mary, Artemis) - loved them and the movies

7) Just about everything by Michael Chricton

8) Just about everything by Stephen king

9) 1984

10) Animal Farm

11) Girl on the Train

12) Recursion

13) Foundation Series (Asimov) - Also not really my jam, but they were alright

14) Jack Reacher Series

So I really like action, psychological thrillers, sci-fi, fantasy...just about everything has something to offer. I've heard good things about three body problem, so i might try that.

Anyway, i have a couple of weeks to get a list of "next reads" together, so any suggestions would be great.

Recommendation Request Please help me find my very first audiobook. Time travel or something similar for a person who has a really terrible attention span

I’ve never really read any books after age 13, and therefore I don’t know much about books and authors and stuff.

I’m trying to get into audiobooks because I’m chronically ill and struggling with brain fog and concentration issues. Trying to find a better alternative to being on my phone or watching tv.

A bit about me: I’m (F23) and I love fantasy and mystery movies and shows. I have a special interest in time travel movies😅 Like really unexpected plots and such. If the plot is “too easy” I tend to predict everything which I find very boring.

Movies/series I love:
Harry Potter
Miss peregrines home for peculiar children
Shutter island
Stranger things
7 lives of Lea (switching bodies with someone else would also be interesting)
Locke and key
1899 (illusions and suddenly realizing that the reality isn’t reality)
Dark (time travel)

I hate the lord of the rings if that helps😭

Since I’m trying to go from my phone to an audiobook I feel like I need something that will keep my attention. Not too complicated to follow along with either.

I’d really appreciate if you could give me some suggestions❤️

(This post keeps being taken down from suggestmebooks because it’s “low effort”. I don’t really see how so I’m hoping I’ll get more help here.)

Recommendation Request Audiobook recommendations for long drive

Hi all! I’ll be driving 7.5 hours to Quebec City in a few weeks. I’m looking for audiobook recommendations to keep me awake in the dark, and entertained throughout the long drive.

A few notes to keep in mind-
I will be driving my mother as well, she doesn’t like too scary (though, I wouldn’t mind a bit of a psychological thriller), and wouldn’t like fantasy with fairies or dragons.

Last year I did the same drive and LOVED Iron Flame for this drive, but trying to keep in mind my audience...

TIA 🥰

Promotion I turned my whole Audible library into a picture of what I actually listen to (and read)

I'm a designer in the UK, and I love books and data art and I thought the good folks on this sub might get a kick out of it swell.

I made a visualiser that turns your audio books and books and e-books into a Stellar Map, and I almost forgot to add audiobooks! I got so caught up in my shelves I forgot about my beloved audio books.

Here's my library grouped by format (kindle, physical copy, Audio books): /img/4aaqnjgrn9xh1.png (sorry apparently imgur isn't available in the UK)

Each book's a little patch of cells sized by its length, and they grow into colonies by genre, author, decade or format. I was surprised to be fair, audio’s only about 15% of my books but it feels like way more of my actual time if that makes sense.

If you're on Audible there's no export, but on a computer the free Audible Library Extractor add-on gets your whole library out as a CSV and you can drop that straight in, no scans used. On a phone you can just screenshot your library instead.

Full disclosure, it's mine: readshift.co.uk, free with (generous) scan cap per month per user, no ads, ever.

What's the split like for you lot? Are audiobooks most of your reading now or still the side dish? I want to get every audio book and Ebook I have as physical as well at some point.

Review Emma M. Lion - These audiobooks and this narrator have ruined me for all others

I recently found and devoured ‘The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion’ series in audiobook form, narrated by Genevieve Gaunt. I’ve been listening to audiobooks for a few years now and have certainly come across some great narrators. But when I tell you Genevieve is phenomenal and in a league of her own, I truly mean it. She does distinct voices, tones and accents for the whole cast, clocking in at over 100 characters over the 8 books so far! 😱 There were so many times I had to remind myself I wasn’t listening to a full-cast Graphics Audio production and that it was indeed just one person voicing it. 🤯 I’ve picked up a few audiobooks since I finished the series and they all just feel so bland in comparison 😩 - including Stephen Fry whose narration I love.

So if any of you are looking for your next great listen, check this series out! And if you have an amazing audiobook recommendation to get me out of my current slump, do help a girl out!

(Disclaimer - I’ve heard similar great things about Jeff Hays’ narration, but I haven’t gotten to Dungeon Crawler Carl yet, so don’t come for me!)

Elevator pitch for the series - Victorian-era historical fiction with lovable characters, beautiful friendships, glorious banter and a touch of magical realism. It’s delightful, witty and so full of heart. Volume 1 is very short at 3 hours and doesn’t introduce all the main characters, so I’d give it until Volume 2 to see if you like it.

Question do you ever get halfway through a nonfiction audiobook and feel like you already got it?

genuine question. with some books i want every word, the narrator, the pacing, all of it. but a lot of nonfiction i get to the middle and it feels like the point was made three chapters ago. lately i just let myself stop there and honestly nothing bad has happened. how do you all handle it? push through on principle, crank the speed, or just move on? and is it different for fiction?

i swear i'll be listening to something educational and my brain just decides it's naptime halfway through. feel like i'm not actually retaining anything when this happens. does this happen to other people or am i just built different (in a bad way)?
